The Sedgwick County Zoo’s Reed Family Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley exhibit opened to the public on May 26 2016. This is one of the newest, most advanced and the third largest elephant exhibit in North America at over 5 acres with the largest swimming hole at 550,000 gallons. The project will be used as an example of the correct way to design and build an Elephant exhibit for years to come. Safari Thatch provided all the thatching for the main pavilion and the other out buildings. We also provided all the materials for the pedestrian fencing, trellises and shade structures. It was an honor to work with the zoo on this project.
The Camp Zambezi main pavilion was one of the largest single structures we have thatched, at over 6000 sq ft, with our synthetic Viro Bali Class A Fire Rated Thatching at the time. The zoo went with this thatch for its look, cost, longevity, ease of application, and warranty. Safari Thatch also provided all the pedestrian fencing lining the walkways though out the exhibit. For this we used our Rustic Eucalyptus 4’ tall prefabricated fence panels with 6” Eucalyptus posts and 4” rails. This produces an almost indestructible fence with many years of use. Our original design with the varied heights of the upright pickets keeps patrons from placing anything on top of the fencing thus reducing the chance of people or property from falling inside exhibits protecting both the customers and the animals. We also used a post and rail fence to separate the people and landscaping. This was a 4” post and 3” rail Eucalyptus fence.
We used Eucalyptus poles for all the structural pole construction on all the out building in the exhibit. Eucalyptus is the fastest and straightest growing tree. They are all plantation grown and forest certified. We prefer these for pole style construction due to their strength over other wood poles and lack of taper, with less than an inch over 20 feet, removing extra weight that would be found in other poles. This is a beautiful and very large and state of the art exhibit and is a feather in the cape of the Sedgwick County Zoo. The people of Wichita and the surrounding area have adopted and taken great interest in
the newly arrived Elephants involving the entire community. The Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley has been a major attraction since it opened and should be on anyone must see list. Safari Thatch is proud to have been involved in this project.

The HingeHouse project was the result of a unique partnership between an independent architect and a pre-fabricated home manufacturer – a partnership among the first of its kind in the country. Today, many pre-fab companies have adopted this collaborative approach recognizing that homeowners are looking for unique, custom homes while taking advantage of reliable and predictable construction methods and costs.
In 2008, the partnership was created to rethink pre-engineered post-and-beam and panelized systems to connect clients to a more modern and integrated set of design values. By integrating systems, factory design approach, manufacturing methodologies and construction sequences with design criteria grounded in sustainable planning and rigorous implementation, HingeHouse was developed.
HingeHouse is a fully-customizable pre-fab home which can be configured to meet the needs of any site, and any family. It is flexible and expandable using Deck House engineered building components. Starting with basic floor plans that are optimized spatially to Deck’s standard components, the living spaces are rotated around a "hinge” point. This design solution addresses the limitations and challenges of a particular site, while highlighting the best aspects of it. HingeHouse considers passive solar orientation depending on where the home is placed on the site and how it is “hinged”. It provides for maximum cross-ventilation from prevailing winds, preserves existing site formations and trees, and works on sloping grades. It addresses specific desired views while mitigating unwanted adjacencies, and provides great flexibility for entry sequences.
HingeHouse uses Deck’s standard sloped roof post-and-beam component system to create a lyrical, light-filled home. The western red cedar exterior is sculptural and dynamic. Interior spaces are lofty, with great view potential using Deck’s own custom-made mahogany windows. The “hinge” of the home, where the two building forms come together, has the added benefit of creating a desirable outdoor living room, complete with an outdoor fireplace. The "hinge” provides both a tool for maximizing customization and spatial orientation and a center of activity at the heart of the home.
Since this partnership in 2008, Maryann Thompson Architects and MATHISON | MATHISON ARCHITECTS have worked with Acorn Deck House Company on numerous full or partial pre-fab projects in the Boston Area, Western Massachusetts, Maryland and Michigan. We have become an advocate for their services and products because it offers advantages on a variety of levels including schedule, cost and quality.
Services provided included visioning, programming, concept design, schematic design, construction documentation and construction administration.

By the 1920s, Art Nouveau’s botanical motifs were dwarfed by the soaring heights of urban architecture. Iconic skyscrapers, like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, adopted classically proportioned, linear designs. Patterson embodies this clean modern aesthetic. We set opal glass in finely cast metalwork to recapture the lasting class of vintage modern design.

4 Types of carpets and best cleaning method
Synthetic Carpets: Synthetic carpets are found in most households as they are abundant in the market. They are easy to maintain and need to be cleaned regularly because dusting is quick on such fabrics. For cleaning of synthetic carpets, you can contact cheap carpet cleaning in Singapore, as the frequency of cleaning is high. Also, the method adopted for cleaning synthetic carpets usually involves dry-chem cleaning or soap-free cleaning methods.
Wool Carpets: Wool carpets can stain and collect dust easily, but you shouldn’t clean them with soap and water. Wool has excellent water absorption and takes a long time to dry completely. Therefore, to clean wool carpets, it is better to consult a professional carpet cleaner, as they have a better knowledge of applying the right cleaning method. Usually, the dry cleaning method is applied to make the carpet faster and cleaner.
Polyester Carpets: Polyester is one of the forms of synthetic fabric that has been one of the most popular carpet fabrics for a long time. This fabric is known for its luxurious feel and comes in a variety of colors. These mats are hydrophobic and stain resistant, however, they are not very durable, especially when exposed to the sun. Therefore, you should not apply the usual soap and water cleaning method to this fabric but entrust the task to professionals.
Berber Carpets: Berber carpets give you a soft, comfortable feeling when you step on them, and with this carpet fabric you need to wash it often because the dust treatment process happens quickly. Weekly vacuuming is recommended along with professional deep cleaning every three months. To clean Berber carpets, you can choose the regular soap and water method, but be careful with rubbing as it can damage the fabric texture.

Regency style beds first adopted a faux-bamboo motif in the late 18th century when England opened trade with the Far East. With that inspiration, we designed the exclusive Taylor Bay Bed steeped in British Colonial splendor, touting regal mahogany hardwoods and rich detailing. Border pieces and corner posts feature growth rings like those on bamboo poles. The headboard and footboard flaunt upholstered woven paneling and hand-detailed artichoke finials. A hand-rubbed mahogany finish achieves a fine sheen.

Challenges with your backyard space? Yeah, that's no problem for us. In this space, the deck could not be attached to the house because of the way this turn-of-the-century home was built. The house is 100 years old and the basement door is right in the middle of the back of the house, preventing an attached deck. Another big challenge on this space was that the lot sloped up the hill and away from the house. So what did we do? We excavated and put in retaining walls and build it into the side of the hill, while maintaining integrity of the backyard space and driveway. The homeowners wanted their outdoor space on the same level as the play area with swingset so that they could watch the kids while they relax. Nailed it!

The bathroom has different purposes and an expansive master bath can separate the functional areas for privacy and elbow room. Kohler, the plumbing fixture company, talks about “performance showering” and “relaxing bathing” as separate activities. You can adopt this idea by separating the bathtub and shower. Make your bath a place for rest and respite. Including a large, comfy tub, a window for outdoor gazing, and places to set candles and a nice glass of wine are just a few ideas.

An old 45 m2 holiday apartment located in a seafront building – Mati, Attica (Greece) – gets completely renovated and modernized to meet the needs of the new generation. The interior space changes as in the new plan an additional bedroom is added, while the main room is attached with the living room creating a uniform feel. The architecture adopted in this apartment is designed to play with the limits of a conventional seasonal apartment, to awaken the senses but also the illusions and to strengthen the dialogue between the owner and the sea.

The outdoor kitchen adopts an industrial theme with its exposed concrete beams and polished concrete floor. Cascading greenery from the overhead open shelving breathes life into the monochromatic space, offering a stark yet harmonious contrast. The centerpiece is a robust island with a textured front panel, which provides a practical yet aesthetically pleasing work area, complemented by modern stainless steel appliances and fixtures that reflect the natural light streaming in from the large windows.

This rear addition provides the family with a living area that has lots of natural light for the family to enjoy and relax. The cathedral ceiling creates an open and airy space that is well lit from the side and rear windows. The cathedral ceiling also flows into the washroom. Light is very important to this family and due to the close proximity to the neighbours on either side, fire shutters were required and incorporated on all the side windows. The basement is a finished space with a bar, washroom, family room, and a dedicated room for the family’s adopted cats. Exterior was finished with matching brick that was sourced and still available.
