The award-winning Urbane Accent Tables feature a simple design that draws from deconstructivism yet still presents a refined, and highly functional piece of furniture. The unique design element of these uncomplex tables is the legs. They jut far above the tabletop itself, creating a dramatic look that’s the first thing you notice. Although the legs are proportionally large, they don’t detract from the table’s functionality or take up too much of the useable space. Made from solid American Ash, the legs are dimensionally stout but have a substantial taper that lightens their look and adds elegance to the otherwise blocky design. To produce the desired look, the legs were torch burned leaving a deeply charred surface, like the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. The surface of the legs was then aggressively scrubbed with metal brushes to remove the softer wood and accentuate the open grain patterns that Ash is known for. All six legs were built from a single slab of Ash, and they are attached to the tabletops using a large dado joint that’s very strong, requiring only glue and no mechanical fasteners. The solid tabletops were crafted from a single slab of Argentine Mesquite that provide a beautiful contrast to the dark, chunky legs. The tables were designed and built in 2023 but the Mesquite slab was responsibly sourced in mid-Arizona in 2016.

The purchasers of this Roland Park home had a long standing relationship with PBA, having successfully completing several projects on two previous homes with the firm. Therefore, the level of trust and familiarity allowed for a very aggressive design and construction schedule. The project included the creation of a new mud room within the footprint of an existing covered porch, the renovation of 4 bathrooms within the house, the re-tasking of various rooms throughout the house, introduction of new lighting and building systems, the renovation of a laundry, the creation of a “bunk room” on the third floor, restoration and repair of various exterior elements, significant landscaping, and creation of a spectacular “man cave” in a previously dreary basement. Norwood House is a 55 year old center hall Georgian Revival style house that sits on an expansive piece of property across from the main campus at Kent Place School. The house and grounds are owned and maintained by the School, and serve as the primary residence for the Head of School and her family. The property is also used on occasion for school functions. Since there have been no significant improvements to the property since the 1980’s, we worked with the School to improve the entire house and surrounding grounds. Specifics included creating a mudroom between the garage and the kitchen, relocating the dining room and family room to improve the flow of the first floor layout, adding three pairs of French doors in the sunroom leading out to a new bluestone patio, gutting and redoing the kitchen, renovating all of the bathrooms, and refinishing the basement. The scope also encompassed various infrastructure improvements, including a new roof, new windows, new high efficiency HVAC and lighting, etc. For the project, we also worked closely with Frances Chester, a local Landscape Architect, on improving the property with new plantings, walkways, patios, driveway, lighting, etc. The school required that the project be complete by the beginning of the 2014 school year. We worked the Contractor, Owner’s Rep, and members of the Board of Trustees to have construction completed within 5 months, which was a very aggressive schedule for a project of this size.

This close-up of the integrated bubblers showcases a critical technical aspect of our custom pool designs. By hydraulic balancing the water pressure, we achieved a gentle, inviting effect rather than an aggressive spray, making the tanning ledge a safe and fun play area for younger children. This level of building precision ensures consistent performance. The contrast of the bubbling clear water against the sharp mosaic tile waterline is a signature detail, adding acoustic and visual movement to this essential outdoor living feature, optimized for North Texas relaxation.

An aggressive slope in the rear yard required a series of retaining walls and steps to create entertaining spaces at a few different levels. Columns with planters provide a visual focus in the mid yard and a classic palette of plantings softens and enlivens the whole setting. A landscape lighting package allows safe access and brings the yard alive in the evenings.
