This family moved into an adorable 1950's bungalow that had not been updated in many decades. This screened-in porch was one of the jewels of the house, but it was painted aggressively green and had nothing on the plywood floor. We added outdoor carpet, painted the wood, and added furniture, decor and plants to make the space super functional and welcoming for guests. The family now claims to be on this porch more than they are inside the house!

This contemporary new residence near the ocean in Ft. Lauderdale, FL is partially clad with a unique wall panel system fabricated from RHEINZINK’s PROTECT LINE of architectural zinc. The PROTECT LINE has a clear coating that provides durable surface protection in aggressive climates. The transparent coating slows down the aging process and preserves the initial appearance of the zinc. Approximately 1,000 sq. ft. of PROTECT LINE blue-grey RHEINZINK was fabricated by Architectural Innovative Metals, Inc. (AIM), Dallas, into AIM’s Ingot Design Series wall panel system. The Ingot Design Series is a pressure-equalized system that offers superior design flexibility and durability in both dry joint and rain screen applications. The RHEINZINK panels were prominently installed as column covers, elevator shaft façade and accent panels. According to AIM project manager Chance Johnson, “This is a high-end residence and the use of the RHEINZINK was perfect for the contemporary design and the applications. Our Ingot Design Series is a one piece, modular unit with no extrusions or additional clips. It’s a great system.” The RHEINZINK panels were installed by Allied Roofing & Sheet Metal, Ft. Lauderdale. (Written by David Mallin, the father of Natanya in who's memory this structure was designed and built.) This is a sandstone and marble sound chamber for use as a communication portal. Located at the Lion's Den Park, overlooking the Animas River Valley, in Durango, Colorado. Dry stack wall construction by Jon Aguilar and Matt Norton. Kiva design, totem carvings, floor design and construction by sculptor, David Mallin. The kiva is a gift to the city of Durango from the Natanya Joy Fund and the Mallin family. It is a memorial tribute to Natanya Joy Mallin Jameson who died on Valentine's Day, 2014, at age 27. Many compassionate and generous donors in Durango and beyond contributed to the fund to help Natty Joy get alternative medical care for a rare aggressive cancer. She died before she could use much of the fund. Those funds purchased the stone and the master masons' labor and expertise. Many of Natty Joy's 'peeps' helped all the way through the project. Completed October 2016.

The project was a renovation of a 1974 two-story house designed by prominent San Francisco architect Albert Lanier (husband of Ruth Asawa). Each level is framed by exterior courtyards which provide both sheltered intimacy with nature and visual connection to the city beyond. The owners were interested in increasing the volume of the house while maintaining its original DNA as defined by angular geometries, redwood interiors and exterior courtyards. Our approach was to expand and surgically modify the house in an architecturally non-aggressive manner. Spaces were opened up and flow and views were maximized. Color, texture, light and vegetation were used to harmonize with the vintage redwood tonalities and the owners’ eclecticism. Dark-knotted douglas fir flooring, fabricated from locally reclaimed pier pilings, was used throughout the house to balance the dark redwood living level with the lighter-hued floors below. The sculptural blackened steel stair anchors the house, weaving together the floors and their diverse spatial character. Hard materials including terrazzo, concrete and mottled gray marble were used to counterbalance the warm softwoods. The house façades and cascading courtyards were reclad in irregular western red cedar planks. We collaborated with our friend and designer Beatrice Santiccioli to create a color language that expresses a natural interaction with the light and materials in the environment, transitioning from bold to atmospheric as you pass downward through the house. Italian landscape designer Monica Viarengo designed the outdoor areas including the intimate entry courtyard and the terraced back garden with expansive views of the city. Her work shifts from curated to wild as your move through the property.

The award-winning Urbane Accent Tables feature a simple design that draws from deconstructivism yet still presents a refined, and highly functional piece of furniture. The unique design element of these uncomplex tables is the legs. They jut far above the tabletop itself, creating a dramatic look that’s the first thing you notice. Although the legs are proportionally large, they don’t detract from the table’s functionality or take up too much of the useable space. Made from solid American Ash, the legs are dimensionally stout but have a substantial taper that lightens their look and adds elegance to the otherwise blocky design. To produce the desired look, the legs were torch burned leaving a deeply charred surface, like the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. The surface of the legs was then aggressively scrubbed with metal brushes to remove the softer wood and accentuate the open grain patterns that Ash is known for. All six legs were built from a single slab of Ash, and they are attached to the tabletops using a large dado joint that’s very strong, requiring only glue and no mechanical fasteners. The solid tabletops were crafted from a single slab of Argentine Mesquite that provide a beautiful contrast to the dark, chunky legs. The tables were designed and built in 2023 but the Mesquite slab was responsibly sourced in mid-Arizona in 2016.

The kitchen and bathrooms in this 20th-Century house in Lake Oswego were given an elegant update. The kitchen was made more spacious for entertaining friends and family. A corner of the space was extended to create more room for an expansive island, an entertainment bar, and storage. The look was completed with dainty pendants, a Taj Mahal quartzite natural stone countertop, and custom cabinets. The bathrooms are deeply relaxing spaces with light hues, a marble shower and floors, and abundant natural light. Project by Portland interior design studio Jenni Leasia Interior Design.
