Our recent customer in Gettysburg, PA wanted to open up their out-dated kitchen. We removed a wall, extending the kitchen into an adjoining room. New semi-custom Echelon Cabinets were installed in a two-toned white and gray. The cabinets were topped with Cambria Quartz in Summerhill.

The goal was to create a maintenance-free system with extreme curb appeal for these homeowners when installing their new driveway, patio, and front entrance. The entire project is permeable and heated, including the front steps. The three piece paver used Gascony Tan for the field to match the home and Brookestone slate for accents. The field was laid at a 45 degree angle to the house, a solution to the road not being square to any entrance on the driveway or walk. The pavers never see the snow or ice on them. Both are drained through the joints as soon as touching the surface. The heat cord had to be fastened to wire mesh on top of the rock base to hold it in place, and then the bedding layer was screeded over it. Traditional paver edging/grid was used on the driveway as an edge restraint, with a decorative concrete curb being laid over top of it, to increase strength and tie it in with the landscapes on the property. Each entrance to the circle drive and to the front door is announced by custom columns built on each side. There are 9 columns total. Each includes four LED low voltage lights for nighttime accent, and one holds a built in mailbox and package delivery shelf. All mail and packages can be picked up right from the car window.

Acorn Cottage StyleThe double height front entry opens to the right and left into a dining room and the music room, seen here. The family was musical, and the room contained not only an excellent grand piano, but also other instruments played by the growing children.
The red armchair is from the set used in the kitchen around the handmade farm table, but only pulled into the kitchen as needed. The arms of the red, simple armchair extend a welcome. I love to put armchairs in entries because their arms always imply a hug to visitors! The antique demilune table was brought by the family from their home in London. The red colors in the Oriental rug immediately give a joyous announcement of welcome at the front door, while being immensely practical. The oriental rugs, if protected by good pads underneath, will last for centuries. The music room beyond echoes the red of the orientals, and the deep taupe on the entry walls is echoed in a rough raw silk texture on the relaxed Roman shades in the music room. Drapery would have been too repetitive of the dining room on the opposite side. A cream tufted leather Edwardian sofa carries the English theme into the music room beyond.

In this kitchen, we removed a soffit and wall that separated the kitchen from the dinning room. We installed St. Martin Cabinetry in the Newhaven door style. The color is Simply White. We used Cambria Quartz in the color New Castle. The backsplash is Mohawk Porcelain Vintage Cleft color Carlsbad Beige 2x4 Mosaic. Elliot Quintin

Bilotta Kitchen & HomeYour smile is not the only curve in the room when you enter this room. This open and airy traditional Atlantic Beach kitchen flaunts a beautiful curved island in natural cherry which is the focal point of the space. There are occasional times when a homeowner comes to the table with a vision from which the designer can draw his inspiration. Such was the case when Bilotta designer Goran Savic and Interior designer, Catherine Ebert’s mutual client announced that design and an expansive feeling should be prioritized over the prevailing “more storage” maxim. Although the kitchen was opened up to afford a view of the beautiful sculptural staircase, cabinetry was limited to a modest “L”-shaped footprint with an island. But not just any island: curved cabinetry in cherry that references the curves of the staircase and its cherry newel post and railing. While the rounded shape doesn’t contribute much to storage, it provides plenty of room for seating and definitely makes a strong design statement. More seating can be found in the comfy cushioned banquette (with storage drawers below). That’s a perfect spot to grab breakfast or even read a book. The unique piece here is the custom table at the banquette. Its beveled oval cherry base and double stainless-steel column supports are evocative of a luxury Art Deco yacht and echo the curved island. Goran utilized a number of space-enlarging visual devices as part of his design arsenal. Open shelving and glass upper sections on the wall cabinets prevent the frequent claustrophobic effect of all solid doors. Installing the wall cabinets higher than usual created a larger backsplash that helps offset the normal feeling of countertop clutter. Of course, nothing opens up a room like the inclusion of abundant natural light, but choice of materials also plays a huge role. Here we have a bleached stain on the wood floor, white cabinets, pale-colored countertops and backsplash tiles, and clear glass pendants, all of which enhance the airiness of this stunning new room.
Laura Kaehler ArchitectsRenovation and addition of an existing cottage on Fisher's Island, NY. The house sits high on a hill that leads down to Long Island Sound and has 180 degree views.
The exterior architecture respects the client's home next door using the same roof slopes, dormer details and same exterior materials. However, we updated the details in a more crisp and modern style.
The transition starts at the front door where we created a new stone and open rafter portico announces the main entrance using cross members of steel cables instead of more traditional wooden collar ties.
The interior picks up on this transitional style with the large great room using the same cross members of steel cables along with skylights to bring in more sunlight.
Natural wood in lighter shades were used along with stone to give texture and warmth to the interiors.

Landscape Plus LtdThis may sound odd but sometimes when a project is finished it feels so obvious and natural that you wonder what could have been there before. Heritage ironwork and lighting border the front yard. A new walkway visually frames the main doorway.
Pool equipment is screened by a combination of brick walling, wooden doors and iron work. A stone arch announces the entrance to the backyard while stone walling dotted with carving inlays supports a hand hued oak arbor. Reclaimed 100 year old brick pavers border the pool. At the rear of the yard a pavilion can be found with a beautiful Rumford fireplace....

thirdstone inc. [^]Nestled against a densely mature growth of poplar, the metsä house employs a modernist vocabulary while being acutely sensitive to the site's natural landscape.
Adhering to a rigourous design brief, the house was designed to be adaptable and resilient, and to reflect the homeowner's requirement for a high-performance home, while being attentive to the pristine setting.
From the entry to the site, the house is slowly revealed through a stand of trees upon approach. The house aims to be warm, simple, clear, and open, with a palette of black accents, wood and concrete. A roof canopy extends outward to announce and provide shelter at the transparent main entry. Roof extensions provide shade and cover over outdoor amenities. The rear courtyard serves as a link to exterior activities between the various volumes.
The home's program is divided into separate, modestly sized volumes that are expertly integrated between a grove of trees and a forest floor of natural and native plants. Private bedroom wings flank the central livng space and extend toward the forest to define an outdoor enclosure.

Made To Last Custom Homes Ltd.Our client fell in love with the original 80s style of this house. However, no part of it had been updated since it was built in 1981. Both the style and structure of the home needed to be drastically updated to turn this house into our client’s dream modern home. We are also excited to announce that this renovation has transformed this 80s house into a multiple award-winning home, including a major award for Renovator of the Year from the Vancouver Island Building Excellence Awards. The original layout for this home was certainly unique. In addition, there was wall-to-wall carpeting (even in the bathroom!) and a poorly maintained exterior.
There were several goals for the Modern Revival home. A new covered parking area, a more appropriate front entry, and a revised layout were all necessary. Therefore, it needed to have square footage added on as well as a complete interior renovation. One of the client’s key goals was to revive the modern 80s style that she grew up loving. Alfresco Living Design and A. Willie Design worked with Made to Last to help the client find creative solutions to their goals.

Century Stair CompanySome homes carry history in their walls. This Georgetown townhome, the first married residence of JFK and Jackie Kennedy, asked for a staircase worthy of that history. The answer: a three-story elliptical stair that rises through the home with quiet authority, its custom handrail molded to follow the curve exactly, without compromise. Engineering and craftsmanship had to work in lockstep here; the architecture left little room for approximation. The result doesn't announce itself. It simply belongs, as if it had always been there, waiting to be uncovered.
