Our clients are always teaching us. In this case, our clients had a vision that changed the direction of the design process midstream. Often our clients tell us they have trouble visualizing. This time, we must admit, we had a little trouble visualizing how their big idea was better than what we were planning. And then, it clicked! This young family of five had outgrown their dark and dated kitchen. Food prep, cooking and baking play a large daily role in this home. Pantry storage was overflowing to the point where bulk ingredients, small appliances and other daily necessities were stored in a nearby closet and the laundry room at the end of the house. Counter space was scarce. The kitchen also served as an office area for the husband, who works from home, and a study area for the three school age children. Given some constraints and a fixed budget, our inclination was to work with the existing kitchen to design a much more efficient space, keeping it close to the laundry room/pantry, which could be maximized for convenient storage and access. We would create an organized work area within the kitchen as well. Our clients were happy with the design. Then, out of the blue, they announced that they would like to move the kitchen into the family room space! Our first reaction was to question how this could work being so far from the pantry storage areas, and the other living spaces of the home. The flow seemed as though it would be odd, but we heard them out and allowed some time for the idea to blossom. And blossom, it did. The existing kitchen and eating space became the new study and family room with enlarged windows and an added sliding door bringing their beautiful gardens into clear sight. The pantry dilemma was solved by adding a full wall of tall cabinetry with roll out storage flanking a beautiful fireplace. A large island with waterfall sides provides copious counter space and seating for the whole family. Dark, dated traditional styling of the past kitchen gave way to contemporary high gloss white and warm rosewood elements. The dramatic Dekton Aura backsplash is the icing on the cake! We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2015 Best Kitchen Renovation by the Harrisburg Builders Association for our project completed in the fall of 2014! The Porters love their new kitchen! Although the original layout was similar, we made some modifications to allow for better appliances. Nothing surprised our contractors more than when we announced we were going to have two faucets over our sink. This is a 36" long x 10" deep fire clay farmhouse sink - undercount - so it could take the two faucets in stride. We've loved having these two faucets from the moment they were added! The sink is no longer a bottleneck in our kitchen - two people can wash dishes, clean eggs, add water to a pot while someone else rinses something, clean veggies - the possibilities are endless. Renovation and addition of an existing cottage on Fisher's Island, NY. The house sits high on a hill that leads down to Long Island Sound and has 180 degree views. The exterior architecture respects the client's home next door using the same roof slopes, dormer details and same exterior materials. However, we updated the details in a more crisp and modern style. The transition starts at the front door where we created a new stone and open rafter portico announces the main entrance using cross members of steel cables instead of more traditional wooden collar ties. The interior picks up on this transitional style with the large great room using the same cross members of steel cables along with skylights to bring in more sunlight. Natural wood in lighter shades were used along with stone to give texture and warmth to the interiors. The new Hooker Furniture Archivist round table and chairs invite all who enter a place of welcome and honor at the table and the canvas artwork depicting Lake Como announces the mood and intent of the room. Lemons placed on the table runner and and an olive tree set in a deep blue planter complete the mood of this space. Some homes carry history in their walls. This Georgetown townhome, the first married residence of JFK and Jackie Kennedy, asked for a staircase worthy of that history. The answer: a three-story elliptical stair that rises through the home with quiet authority, its custom handrail molded to follow the curve exactly, without compromise. Engineering and craftsmanship had to work in lockstep here; the architecture left little room for approximation. The result doesn't announce itself. This kitchen remodel was part of a major home remodel on five acres in the ranch country along California’s Central Coast. The overall architecture and interior design style of the home, and the kitchen in particular, is “modern farmhouse” with an intentional leaning toward modern, and striving further for “inspired.” With spectacular views of horses and vineyards just outside the windows, and a very open floor plan, the goal was to create a strikingly attractive and highly functional entertaining space that still allowed the views to be center stage. The two-tone blend of simple slab-style tobacco-colored “wood” cabinets with Midnight Shadow transitional cabinets resulted in a combination that is both classic and casual. High-end appliances, brass and black handles and faucets, Old-English metal mesh cabinet inserts, and inspired light fixtures add the finishing touches that deliver an inviting, and uniquely timeless “modern farmhouse.”
