When visitors enter your front yard, make is special. Large potted containers flowing with flowering vines, wide steps, and colourful perennial plantings announce their arrival into your yard and home.

Sentinel stretches across the brow of a winding grade break high above the Napa Valley. This seasonal residence was conceived as an agrarian compound which draws inspiration from its agricultural roots and takes a leap forward in innovative construction and a modern expression of timber and steel craft.
A gently curving gravel drive circuits the lower end of the vineyard, announcing the arrival on the property. The drive slowly straightens to align with the vineyard rows to the North and the long axis of the residential structures to the South. Three gable-end barn forms follow the ordered lines of the vineyard to one side, and on the other, hug the rock-lined edge of the forest. Flanked by main residence and guest residence on either side, the taller, middle barn structure steps back from the forest to form a broad terrace. An elegant trellised colonnade threads through the three buildings, providing shade and dappled light to the terrace – a private place for food and wine to be enjoyed overlooking the magnificent valley below.

Some homes carry history in their walls. This Georgetown townhome, the first married residence of JFK and Jackie Kennedy, asked for a staircase worthy of that history. The answer: a three-story elliptical stair that rises through the home with quiet authority, its custom handrail molded to follow the curve exactly, without compromise. Engineering and craftsmanship had to work in lockstep here; the architecture left little room for approximation. The result doesn't announce itself. It simply belongs, as if it had always been there, waiting to be uncovered.

Our clients are always teaching us. In this case, our clients had a vision that changed the direction of the design process midstream. Often our clients tell us they have trouble visualizing. This time, we must admit, we had a little trouble visualizing how their big idea was better than what we were planning. And then, it clicked!
This young family of five had outgrown their dark and dated kitchen. Food prep, cooking and baking play a large daily role in this home. Pantry storage was overflowing to the point where bulk ingredients, small appliances and other daily necessities were stored in a nearby closet and the laundry room at the end of the house. Counter space was scarce. The kitchen also served as an office area for the husband, who works from home, and a study area for the three school age children. Given some constraints and a fixed budget, our inclination was to work with the existing kitchen to design a much more efficient space, keeping it close to the laundry room/pantry, which could be maximized for convenient storage and access. We would create an organized work area within the kitchen as well. Our clients were happy with the design. Then, out of the blue, they announced that they would like to move the kitchen into the family room space! Our first reaction was to question how this could work being so far from the pantry storage areas, and the other living spaces of the home. The flow seemed as though it would be odd, but we heard them out and allowed some time for the idea to blossom. And blossom, it did. The existing kitchen and eating space became the new study and family room with enlarged windows and an added sliding door bringing their beautiful gardens into clear sight. The pantry dilemma was solved by adding a full wall of tall cabinetry with roll out storage flanking a beautiful fireplace. A large island with waterfall sides provides copious counter space and seating for the whole family. Dark, dated traditional styling of the past kitchen gave way to contemporary high gloss white and warm rosewood elements. The dramatic Dekton Aura backsplash is the icing on the cake!

This may sound odd but sometimes when a project is finished it feels so obvious and natural that you wonder what could have been there before. Heritage ironwork and lighting border the front yard. A new walkway visually frames the main doorway.
Pool equipment is screened by a combination of brick walling, wooden doors and iron work. A stone arch announces the entrance to the backyard while stone walling dotted with carving inlays supports a hand hued oak arbor. Reclaimed 100 year old brick pavers border the pool. At the rear of the yard a pavilion can be found with a beautiful Rumford fireplace....

Taragano Design & Build completed this stair landing as part of a
whole house remodel in Contra Costa County, California.
Split level houses have a circulation problem at the level change.
The stair is usually enclosed, the landing is a dead corner, and
the two floors read as separate houses. Here the enclosure came out
and the stair was rebuilt as a wide open platform, so the level
change becomes part of the room rather than a passage through it.
Drawers were built into the step returns. On a stair that wide, the
carriage volume is substantial and it would otherwise be sealed
dead space. Putting storage there is the difference between an
architectural gesture and a piece of the house that earns its
footprint.
The sliding door lets the upper hall close off without a swing arc,
which matters at a landing where a hinged door would need clear
floor area the stair does not have.
Everything is rift white oak, including the treads, the risers, and
the door. Running one species across the stair and the flooring
means nothing announces where the millwork ends and the floor
begins.
