Designing our 3rd home for this long-standing client was a real treat when she moved to a big, bright, newly built home in Celina. Being entrusted with every aspect from the floor to the ceiling, down to the last accessory we filled this home with color, comfort and casual elegance. The client was ready for some out of the box thinking and more progressive design ideas from where she’d been in the past. The moody media room, jewel box home office and color pops in the family room exemplify how a home can evoke many different emotions and represent all of the different styles that appeal to her. The backyard is now a relaxing paradise with covered lounging space, an expansive pool, a putting green and a firepit area for intimate fireside chats. Home is now the haven the client anticipated we would create for her and told us she has to sometimes pinch herself to remind her that all this is really hers!

After years of dedication and anticipation, our clients embarked on their dream renovation project as they approached retirement. Their vision? A cozy yet elegant space nestled in the picturesque coastal town of Ipswich, MA. With the help of Betsy at Hutton Home Design, our skilled team, and many trade partners, our client’s vision became a reality. We built them a custom, one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) over the garage of their daughter and son-in-law's home. The heating and cooling system consisted of mini split units. We cantilevered the second floor to add space to the kitchen, making the room seem larger. We created a functional and beautiful space within the zoning constraints of 900 square feet. All the while, careful consideration was given to scale and ensuring the addition looked like an extension of the existing home. The completed renovation exceeded all expectations, providing the couple with a perfect haven when they embark on their retirement journey.  The newly renovated space boasts: Shared foyer with white oak stairs and floors throughout Custom kitchen with hickory island, vaulted ceilings with white oak beam and access to their shared deck Living room with gas fireplace Convenient laundry space Spacious bathroom with curbless shower and custom vanity Bright bedroom with his and her closets Plenty of storage via a pantry, laundry closet, coat closet and cleaning supply closet

This lower level renovation started out as a simple project. The family wanted to install a home theater in their unfinished basement. Initially it was only going to be a space with a home theater where they could occasionally watch a movie or a sporting event. Once the theater design was complete, the clients embraced the elegance of the custom cherry wood cabinetry, columns and wainscoting. In addition, by having all of the audio video components hidden out of sight, the room would have a serene, peaceful ambience. The theater design enticed the clients to finish off the rest of the basement. A bar area was designed with an antique bar, and a lounge area with a fireplace was also constructed. As the layout evolved and the placement of the bar was resolved a perfect area for a wine cellar became evident. Once the clients realized how comfortable the space would be, they understood that they would probably be spending more time in the basement than they originally anticipated. This thought led them to want two large flat panel TVs on the walls in the bar area so they could watch several events at the same time. They love the theater. The 110” screen and quality audio video system is a constant source of entertainment for the entire family. They use the entire basement frequently as a gathering point for family and friends.

Photo by Jim Raycroft When these homeowners first came to us in 2011, they had a list of major projects to adapt their Victorian home to the needs of their growing family. The first phase of work was a basement renovation to provide informal hang out space. The second was a garage. Finally they turned their attention to the master bedroom and bathroom. FROM BALCONY TO BATHROOM At one end of the suite was a cramped and outdated bathroom. At the other end was an underutilized, high-maintenance, exterior balcony. A leaky door to the balcony, as well as inadequate insulation and air-sealing and a poorly designed heating system, made the bedroom difficult to keep comfortable in the winter. We chose to capture the old balcony as indoor space and relocate the bathroom to that end of the master suite. This strategy not only gave us the opportunity to install much better insulation and good, tight windows, it created enough new floor area that we were able to include a large walk-in shower, separate vanities, a toilet room, and a make-up counter in the new master bathroom. ADAPTING AND UPDATING The project allowed us to find a prominent place for an old leaded glass window sash that the homeowners had been hanging onto for several years in anticipation of this project. The flow and layout of the master suite are now much better suited to a 21st century lifestyle. But best of all (to us, anyway), the homeowners report that the bathroom—where the old balcony had been—is now the most comfortable room in the house.

We were pleased to be brought in on this penthouse renovation in the heart of Bucktown, Chicago. Distinctive quartzite counters are a showstopper, with unique veining and striking color variation, from blue to gray to ochre. The pearlescent blue-gray backsplash unites the entire space. The overall goal was to create an expansive entertaining kitchen that could accommodate our clients’ large gatherings of family and friends, and provide them with several zones for prepping, serving, seating, and socializing. Also high on the clients’ wish list: a more generous island, professional appliances, and better storage. We expanded the island in two directions to allow for comfortable seating at the counter with plenty of room for a table in the breakfast nook. An expandable bar height table in the adjacent dining area offers even more flexibility for eating and socializing. We designed a custom hutch which has a multitude of storage options and functionality – open display shelves, roll-outs, drawers, extra counter/serving space, as well as a beverage fridge and appliance garage/coffee center. On the opposite side of the kitchen, we replaced a small pantry closet with a furniture style built-in that took advantage of underutilized space. Anticipating issues with supply chain, we opted to use a local cabinet maker on this project which allowed us to fully customize the cabinets for optimal functionality. Other stand-out features include a Thermador appliance package, workstation farmhouse sink, ‘touch’ faucet, hot+cold water dispenser, and hidden toe-kick storage. Our clients now have a beautiful, cohesive space that reflects their personal style and fulfills their dream of a having an expansive kitchen where they can cook and entertain for years to come.

A 6,000 square foot 2-story new home complex in Milpitas was designed to facilitate the owners’ large business parties and gatherings, to have rooms for the kids to come back to upstairs, and a ground floor master suite with a huge walk-in closet. Several separate structures make up the dwelling: The main house, 3-car garage with carport for overflow parking, and a separate entertainment and recreation building separated by a courtyard from the main house. The business activities include gatherings in the hundreds of people, so parking was maximized and guests can flow in through a separate gate to party in the courtyard and recreation building. Inside this structure is a wet bar, billiard room, workout gym and home theater. The main house ground floor has formal and informal living rooms, open kitchen and master suite with views and expansive windows in every direction. The house is sited on the crestline of a hill with views of the San Francisco Bay and private golf course below. The indoor-outdoor aspect of the house is further accentuated with outside living and dining areas. High ceilings and expansive glass walls dissolve the sense of enclosure taking advantage of the site’s openness and privacy. The owner’s suite is downstairs in anticipation of aging-in-place, and upstairs there are three bedrooms and four bathrooms plus a sitting area lounge and casual TV loft area. The house sits on one acre at the top of a low hill range overlooking Milpitas. The city was very cognizant of the importance of keeping a low profile at this crestline and required extensive story poles and photo evidence of the proper height and siting so as not to be seen from certain selected vantage points. Ooh baby our client is excited and so are we! New room, new kiddo, new accessories, new adventure! Little cutie Carter needs a crib to crash… (so the parents can try to get some sleep) There’s nothing quite like preparing for one’s first child. From the crazy anticipation to the silliest worries, adding a plus one to the family can be a lot (not to mention the hormones and why do pickles sound SOOO good?!?) Luckily, Paxton Place is more than happy to help! We can’t bring ice cream at 2am (sorry) but we can design a cute and cozy space for you and the baby to bond together. Our client wanted a modern twist on the classics for little Carter. We chose various blues and whites for our boy; but notice the fun patterns on the ceiling and sheets. There’s a refined minimalist design with the furniture that feels timeless but looks 21st century. Transitioning, a new baby isn’t just for the parents; grandparents have to make room, also. They opted for a more traditional approach for grandbaby number 1. To accommodate, we installed soft lacy curtains and blankets for our special man. There’s also antique plates and mirrors to reflect a more mature design that matches the rest of their home. We loved creating two unique environments, connecting generations to come.
