UserThe Clients contacted Cecil Baker + Partners to reconfigure and remodel the top floor of a prominent Philadelphia high-rise into an urban pied-a-terre. The forty-five story apartment building, overlooking Washington Square Park and its surrounding neighborhoods, provided a modern shell for this truly contemporary renovation. Originally configured as three penthouse units, the 8,700 sf interior, as well as 2,500 square feet of terrace space, was to become a single residence with sweeping views of the city in all directions.
The Client’s mission was to create a city home for collecting and displaying contemporary glass crafts. Their stated desire was to cast an urban home that was, in itself, a gallery. While they enjoy a very vital family life, this home was targeted to their urban activities - entertainment being a central element.
The living areas are designed to be open and to flow into each other, with pockets of secondary functions. At large social events, guests feel free to access all areas of the penthouse, including the master bedroom suite. A main gallery was created in order to house unique, travelling art shows.
Stemming from their desire to entertain, the penthouse was built around the need for elaborate food preparation. Cooking would be visible from several entertainment areas with a “show” kitchen, provided for their renowned chef. Secondary preparation and cleaning facilities were tucked away.
The architects crafted a distinctive residence that is framed around the gallery experience, while also incorporating softer residential moments. Cecil Baker + Partners embraced every element of the new penthouse design beyond those normally associated with an architect’s sphere, from all material selections, furniture selections, furniture design, and art placement.

Wallpaper produces an elegant way to completely change the look of a space and allows you to put your own personal touch on the walls. Whether you’re on a budget or you just want to add more attention to your high-end interiors you can play around with your own creativity in so many different ways through wallpaper. Normally we are used to having spaces like our living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms wallpapered, but we forget that our bathrooms and powder rooms can also be an uplifting and creative area within your homes.
It’s important to realise that by choosing the correct wallpaper for a space can make a room appear bigger, brighter and warmer than it is. If your bathroom has low ceilings try to pick patterns with cool colour backgrounds like greens and blues. For colder environments you want colours that make the room feel warmer, these colours are oranges, yellows and reds.
In regards to the type of wallpaper suitable for bathrooms usually vinyl wallpaper is the best option. This material is resistant to water and water vapour making it appropriate for kitchens and bathrooms. Wallpaper can make so much difference in a room, from creative patterns, smooth surfaces and a huge variety of colour you are sure to find a wallpaper that suits your individual flair and character.

A new kitchen layout along with a peninsula grounds the chef’s kitchen while securing its part in the everyday living space. Well-appointed dining and living rooms infuse dimension and texture into the home, and a pop of personality in the powder room round out the main level. Strong raw wood elements, rich tones, hand-formed elements, and contemporary nods make an appearance throughout the newly renovated main level and primary suite of the home.

Adam Gibson DesignThis delightful family lived with their traditional kitchen for several years before bringing me in to expand and modernize. The 1920’s Tudor had the typical compartmentalized rooms surrounding the kitchen. A previous owner had expanded it into the breakfast room, but hadn’t removed any walls. However, they placed a large addition in the rear which enabled us to remove the cramped ½ bath and practically inaccessible pantry for relocation.
By removing those walls, we were able to expand into a naturally-flowing U-shaped kitchen with a seating peninsula, adding a second prep sink for another cook. Removing the gas range, we added double ovens, an induction cooktop, and 30-inch-deep pantry cabinets, thus giving the full-depth refrigerator the appearance of a built-in. L-shaped, floating corner shelves with incorporated LED lights contribute to the openness. While we liked the idea of removing the wall to the existing dining room, the need to keep the family cat out of certain areas led us to remove only half, and installing a gorgeous barn door.
What would normally be considered an appliance garage is actually a recessed space into where we eventually put a new ½ bath, which provides an interesting defined shelf space within the bath.

Wine Cellar SpecialistsAs you can see, our custom wine cellar Dallas builders included a wine tasting table in this wine room, for convenience.
Just like the wine racks, the table was made from All Heart Redwood. As such, it blends in wonderfully.
Case storage was also included, beneath the Redwood tabletop.
