FUNCTION • Construct the shed slab close to grade to permit easy access for bicycle storage, while building shed walls above grade to ensure against termites and dryrot. • Install a French door and operable casement windows to admit plenty of daylight and provide views to the garden. • Include rugged built-in work bench, shelves, bike racks and tool storage for a rustic well-organized and efficient space. • Incorporate GFIC electrical service for safe access to power at this distant corner of the yard. • Position energy-efficient interior lighting to ensure space can be used year-round. • Switch control of exterior light from house and from shed for ease of command. AESTHETICS • Design and detail the shed to coordinate with the Arts and Crafts style house. • Include an arbor for future flowering vines, further softening the shed’s garden presence. • Simple and rustic interior surfaces ensure that the space is easy to clean. • Create an aged and softly weathered appearance, and protect the exterior siding by finishing the cedar with a custom-colored semi-transparent stain. INNOVATIVE MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION • Factory-built components were pre-assembled to allow for a speedy assembly and for a shorter on-site construction schedule. • Each component was easily transported through the yard without disturbing garden features. • Decorative exterior trim frames the door and windows, while a simpler trim is used inside the unadorned shed. OBSTACLE OVERCOME • The structure is located in the corner of the yard to avoid disturbance of a curly willow tree. • The low-profile structure is positioned close to property lines while staying beneath the allowable daylight plane for structures. • To comply with daylight plane close to fence, the roof form combines hip and gable forms, with door located at gable end. • The height of the modest interior is maximized, without exceeding the allowable building height. CRAFTSMANSHIP • The concrete slab was precisely formed and finished for ease of shed assembly before the factory-built components were delivered to site. • Precision planning meant the pre-framed door fit exactly between raised concrete curb.

This well lit and appointed European farmhouse kitchen is a delight to cook in. The large island lends plenty of space for entertaining large and small groups or for rolling out your favorite confectionery delights. The antique bronze hardware lends a bit of old world charm and a warm element to the clean lines of the white cabinetry. The mid-tone wide plank wood flooring also lends both contrast and warmth to the room. The home had gone through an extensive renovation several years earlier that added a master bedroom suite and updates to the front façade. The kitchen however was not part of that update and a prior 1990’s update had left much to be desired. The client is an avid cook, and it was just not very functional for the family. The original kitchen was very choppy and included a large eat in area that took up more than its fair share of the space. On the wish list was a place where the family could comfortably congregate, that was easy and to cook in, that feels lived in and in check with the rest of the home’s décor. They also wanted a space that was not cluttered and dark – a happy, light and airy room. A small powder room off the space also needed some attention so we set out to include that in the remodel as well. See that arch in the neighboring dining room? The homeowner really wanted to make the opening to the dining room an arch to match, so we incorporated that into the design. Another unfortunate eyesore was the state of the ceiling and soffits. Turns out it was just a series of shortcuts from the prior renovation, and we were surprised and delighted that we were easily able to flatten out almost the entire ceiling with a couple of little reworks. Other changes we made were to add new windows that were appropriate to the new design, which included moving the sink window over slightly to give the work zone more breathing room. We also adjusted the height of the windows in what was previously the eat-in area that were too low for a countertop to work. We tried to keep an old island in the plan since it was a well-loved vintage find, but the tradeoff for the function of the new island was not worth it in the end. We hope the old found a new home, perhaps as a potting table. As a conceptual urban infill project, the Wexley is designed for a narrow lot in the center of a city block. The 26’x48’ floor plan is divided into thirds from front to back and from left to right. In plan, the left third is reserved for circulation spaces and is reflected in elevation by a monolithic block wall in three shades of gray. Punching through this block wall, in three distinct parts, are the main levels windows for the stair tower, bathroom, and patio. The right two-thirds of the main level are reserved for the living room, kitchen, and dining room. At 16’ long, front to back, these three rooms align perfectly with the three-part block wall façade. It’s this interplay between plan and elevation that creates cohesion between each façade, no matter where it’s viewed. Given that this project would have neighbors on either side, great care was taken in crafting desirable vistas for the living, dining, and master bedroom. Upstairs, with a view to the street, the master bedroom has a pair of closets and a skillfully planned bathroom complete with soaker tub and separate tiled shower. This Southern Traditional styled home located in Central is a 2-story with 4 bedrooms and 6 ½ baths. The square footage for the conditioned spaces is 8,780 sq ft and the total under roof square footage is 13,314 sq ft. The full 2-story home stretches along a large country lot, maximizing the views to the backyard and a pond. As you enter the entry foyer, a staircase turns above your head creating a paneled arched opening that leads you to the living room. To the left of the foyer is a study with white oak wood paneled walls. Hidden by the paneling is a murphy bed that can be pulled down for guests. To the right of the foyer is a formal dining room, which connects to the kitchen through a butler’s pantry. The kitchen comes with two islands and a breakfast nook with views of the front yard. Off the side of the kitchen is a keeping room, which has corner views to the backyard and access to an outdoor living area with vaulted wood truss ceilings and drop-down screens. Past the kitchen is a hallway that leads to the garage with rooms such as a large man cave and exercise room branching off it. The main living room has uninterrupted views to the backyard with large windows framing your sight line. From here you have access to a back porch that leads to the outdoor living area with a large fireplace, dining area, and kitchen, which all opens up to an infinity pool. Back inside past the living room, is a vestibule that will lead to the laundry room on the left and the master suite on the right. Upstairs are 3 more bedrooms, which all have their own ensuite bathrooms. All three have views looking down over the site with two having access to the front porch balcony. You will also find a large common area with views to the backyard pool and conditioned storage room.

Each wing of this former stable and carriage house became separate homes for two brothers. Although the structure is symmetrical from the exterior, it is uniquely distinct inside. The two siblings have different personalities and lifestyles; each wing takes on characteristics of the brother inhabiting it.
