Formerly the workshop of mid-century artisans, this manufacturing building in NYC's SoHo neighborhood was transformed into an 11,000 sf townhouse. The home features a full level spa, two-story living room, six bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, and rooftop addition with pool. Neighboring buildings were underpinned to lower the cellar to accommodate the spa which features dry stacked stone walls that blend into the swimming pool and hot tub and are featured throughout the entire level. The architect’s vision was to have visual recognition that the space was below ground. Thinking about the striations of the earth beneath its surface, he was inspired by the Therme Baths and Spa in Zurich where all the walls are clad with narrow strips of Vals quartzite. After seeing a rendering, the stone supplier advised that only certain stones could survive constant submersion in pool water and the stone should not have the cleft face he had originally imagined due to bacteria issues. Honed, Super Grey granite with white veining was used – the slabs cut into long 3” wide strips installed at random lengths to accentuate the concept of layering as found in the Earth. The kitchen was designed to feel more like a furnished room to integrate with the family room. The architect addressed this through materials and the design of the over-sized island. The countertop is the only veined stone in the kitchen – a beautiful single slab of Super White marble. The island is clad in mirror-polished stainless steel, transforming it into a beautiful piece of furniture that blends into the space. A two-story living room with 22' ceilings created a problem of comfortable scale. The key was the fireplace – the strongest vertical element in the room. By using horizontal vein-cut slabs of light-colored Driftwood marble, the scale of the space instantly became more intimate.

This refaced kitchen is now bright and cheery, reflecting the homeowners personal style. While the home is modest in the range of color choices, it's got lots of style. A sophisticated motif without a lot of clutter. Cabinet refacing saved a lot of their budget allowing them to upgrade change the countertops and backsplash too. When you remodel the kitchen, the more elements you can change the bigger the transformation. Many times when you try to leave in and work off an existing element of the room, it holds you back in terms of design. The countertop color highlights the beautiful walnut glazing on the the cabinet doors. Enriching the space with a subtle undertone of warmth. The Sonora Corian countertops are a warm cocoa color with sublte swirls of gray and brown, contrasting and blancing the rich antique white cabinetry. Corian is a solid surface material that will last for decades. Corian is strong and durable material that is bacteria resistant and doesn't scratch or stain. We continued with the Corian for the backsplash picking up the colors of the cabinets and the countertops with Sandlewood. The swirls of coco, off white and gray, continue with the muted palette. They chose Corian for the backsplash because they didn't want to deal with grout and tile as they did in the past. The Corian backsplash will never need sealing or regrouting, creating another maintenance free component to this updated kitchen remodel. This garden imagines the ruin of an ancient Roman bath, remodeled into a koi pond and swimming pool in a splendid formal garden. All over Europe at the height of their empire, the Romans built elaborate baths connected to gymnasiums, not unlike modern health clubs. This landscape, inspired by "Capability" Brown, who designed the gardens of many English great homes in the 18th Century, incorporates the weathered, carved stone of a rediscovered Roman bath organically into the landscape, with natural boulders standing in contrast. Water lilies, iris and other aquatic plants inhabit the water's edge. Biological filtering by plants and bacteria would make it safe to swim among the fish.

Designed for the 2014 Chicago Flower and Garden show, this display garden captures a playful sensibility well-suited for any family to enjoy. The clean, modern lines and carefully planned spaces of this 50’ by 50’ garden form an enticing setting to simply unplug. Working within a very limited area, the design organizes a bio pool with sundeck, a spillover water feature and lounge area, and a gravel dining terrace with a built-in fireplace and shade tree canopy. Unlike traditional pools, our bio pool utilizes aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria, and microbes, rather than harsh chemicals, to filter the water. Impurities and excess nutrients are drawn out of the water naturally, creating a much healthier swimming environment. A native plant palette is incorporated throughout the garden with shade trees, ornamentals, native forbs, and perennials in an emergent spring landscape.
