A series of large Mission lantern pendants over the main island complement a custom four light chandelier with smaller 8 inch Mission lantern shades. Solid panels metal finished to match the pendants give these Mission lantern fixtures a weight that balances out the gorgeous wood cabinetry, dark work surface along the wall and dark color of the chairs in this kitchen.

Two kitchen islands define the space, though each serves a distinct purpose. The first island is centered around the cooktop and prep area, while the second acts more like a piece of freestanding furniture—with seating, storage, and a softer presence in the room. Four oversized pendant lanterns anchor the entire space, offering both visual weight and warm illumination. To support entertaining, a full back kitchen was added behind the main space, offering the same level of functionality with additional appliances and prep areas. A fully retractable pass-through window opens directly to the outdoor entertaining area, making the kitchen feel as expansive as the outdoors. O’Brien Harris also designed and fabricated the cabinetry in the primary bath.

For the Dining Room we selected Lemon-wood as the featured species and designed the table, sideboard and built in hutch featuring it. The wall housing the hitch had a significant section that set 4" proud of the rest of the wall. The two door section to the right of the center glass section is false and was created to balance the unit on the wall. The use of Acid-washed glass enabled us to pull off the charade. The table base is bolted to the floor to minimize it's footprint and support its weight when opened with leaves to seat 10. The sideboard , again specifically designed for it's function and storage is topped with an inset stone that replicates the pattern of the Lemon-wood. The rear of the sideboard was designed to follow the angle of the sofa against which it stands. The Living Room beyond was designed to celebrate music and the spectacular views of the city beyond the floor to ceiling windows. The sofa, like all of the furniture throughout were custom designed by MB Designs for this project.. The carpets in the entrance, Dining and Living room carpets (also by MB Designs) were created having the field of each in matching color with each respective border a varying color providing a continuity to the overall space while offering each a defining element of it's own.

This is the largest luxury penthouse in Old Town Scottsdale, and the cabinetry was designed to match that distinction. The kitchen anchors an expansive open-plan living space with flat-front white oak cabinetry running wall to wall, clean and uninterrupted against crisp white walls. A dramatic oversized island in white marble with bold veining commands the center of the room, its waterfall edge dropping cleanly to the floor on two sides. The scale of the island is deliberate: it holds its own against the floor-to-ceiling windows and the sweeping Scottsdale skyline beyond. Black fixtures ground the design without adding weight. Integrated appliances maintain the clean line of the cabinetry wall. Under-cabinet lighting warms the stone backsplash at the perimeter, balancing the brightness of the natural light flooding the space. Every decision in this kitchen was made at the scale of the property. The result is a space that leads the room rather than serving it. The intrigue of the home’s powerful facade lies in the locally sourced puddingstone archway inviting you in. The custom designed bronze door with leaded sidelights opens into the foyer from underneath the covered walkway to the right, in essence hidden from the street. The wide-open central expanse allows one a sneak preview of the stone patio and back yard beyond, highlighting the 120-foot-tall Beech tree that has been thriving on the site for over two hundred years. The challenge of designing this 6,300 square foot home and pool house was the narrow but deep one-acre lot. John Meyer’s master planning of a strong front elevation hides the “sideways configuration” of the floorplan. To the left of the archway is a 3-car garage below an entertainment room, with a master bedroom suite on the top floor bridging the main house behind the central eyebrow over the archway. The sense of having been on the site for decades was the intent of the design abundant in the use of stone and masonry. The carved stonework shapes the main and secondary archways as full ovals. Slate detailing is set between the sunburst oval window, balancing interest with the keystones framing the five windows across the bridge. Rough cut boulders give weight to the structure’s base, while straight runs of stone border the shingles under the roof’s eaves and shaped stones guide corner edges downward along the retaining walls. The granite steps and bluestone patio lead one back to the lighted base of the Beech tree, terrace and on-axis pool area beyond. The roof is double thick slate, and the circular drive is crushed stone with granite edging. Like the longevity of the Beech tree, this unique design will stand proudly in its neighborhood for years to come.

This expansive kitchen was done by Bilotta senior designer in collaboration with Nancy Epstein, founder and CEO of Artistic Tile, for Nancy’s son and daughter-in-law’s home. Frameless Rutt Regency cabinetry is featured in two different finishes: linen white paint on the perimeter and stained walnut on the island. Almost all surfaces are Calacatta Gold marble but in a variety of formats and finishes, obviously all by Artistic Tile. The backsplash, including the dramatic arched wall the houses the range and hood, features elongated brick tiles with a honed finish. The underside of the arch is lined with polished mosaics and the countertops are 2” thick slabs, polished. The flooring is the only surface in a different material – for that they used Artistic Tile’s “Vestige Ash”, a limestone with a brushed finish in a chevron pattern that creates texture and really shows the stone’s veining. In an article in Traditional Home, written by Amy Elbert, Nancy commented, “Everything has some weight, some girth to it. A common design mistake is making things too skinny. You want to feel the tile’s majesty and its beauty.” Rita added, “We always played with a delicate balance between contemporary and traditional elements.” The two stainless steel undermount sinks are Franke with Dornbracht faucets. There are various different work zones making it also a very functional space, aside from being sophisticated and elegant overall. There is the cooking area with the 36” range and custom hood on one wall; the island holds the main sink and a dishwasher; another wall houses the full height, 36” wide stainless steel refrigerator and freezer; and the sink wall (with a beautiful view to the backyard) has another dishwasher as well as refrigerator drawers.
