Calacatta marble-look wall tile extends seamlessly into the walk-in glass shower, which is equipped with both a ceiling-mounted rain head and an adjustable handheld system. Underfoot, handmade blue arabesque floor tiles add artisanal texture and a soft pop of color that bridges the two tonal worlds of the room.
The double vanity wall makes a statement with natural white oak cabinetry, brushed brass hardware, and a thick Calacatta marble slab countertop with an integrated undermount sink. Zander's InteriorsImbued with color inspiration from the 1930’s, the massive style capacity of this home is demonstrated over 15 years of artful adaptation in the living and dining rooms. An analogous color scheme with prominent aqua and green tones popular in the 1930’s first graces the living room to creatively infuse a traditional French style. Bergère chairs flank the large focal fireplace with its classical use of stone and versatile dentil trim molding. Coordinating colors in boldly-striped silk shantung bring the acanthus leaf chandelier comfortably into the 20thcentury; only to be jettisoned even further with the room’s next iteration. Still with a nod to the 1930’s color palette, bolder tones of orange and rose with smaller stripes later reinvent the saber legged dining room chairs to skillfully incorporate smoky hues on the walls. Sketchy floral print drapery revises the room by bringing a joyful eclecticism, ever expanding the potential of the space to bring in new influences. A curved back chair reminiscent of the 1930’s set beneath decidedly 20th century artwork; further showcasing the room’s latest use of more streamlined forms. The more transitional upholstered chairs and ottoman craftily unify a more diverse portfolio of furnishings and artwork, as does the continuation of deep tones in thought both spaces.
Invigorated once again with a third look, the living and dining areas are dramatically transformed with a backdrop of soft neutral punctuated by juicy pops of color introduce a new sense of depth and character to the space. Story LLCOur clients had a dishwasher disaster in their 1950's galley kitchen last year. The insurance company was sonly willing to pay about half the cost to rebuild. The clients also didn't like the dark, tight kitchen, and wanted to come up up with a way to open it up to the main room of their home. We took out the wall between kitchen and living room, while keeping the flow of the kitchen and saving money on pre-fab cabinets. We also put a large island at the end of the space, with open shelving above to display beloved travel artifacts. One secret - the stair down to the lower floor goes right beneath the island, leaving just enough space for some toy storage shelves on either side. We used hand-crafted Zellige tile for the backsplash, to echo the crafted quality of some of the décor. Not every client has an endless budget, so we work with families to get the most from their resources. In this case, the clients also feel that the space has "California Coastal" light, even in the Pacific Northwest.

Ellen Farber Strategic DesignThe new open plan living/dining room. The countertop that contains all the appliances is at standard height of 36". Although the sink has a recessed wheelchair accessible approach, maintaining the 36" counter height allows our client to stand and put dishes away in the cabinets above. The kitchen island is for dining and meal prep and is the "command central" of the apartment . Beneath the kitchen island are four drawers for the food pantry, a microwave, pots and pan drawers within easy reach to the cooktop and storage drawers. There is 48" between the kitchen island and the island to allow for easy wheelchair access, while full wheelchair turns are made easy on either end of the island. The living room leaves plenty of space for her wheelchair to join the sitting area while the ottoman in front of the sofa serves as a footrest or place to put things when a tray is placed on top of it. The ottoman pulls the room together with a multi color fabric much like a rug would do...we were not able to have a rug in the space due to space limitations as well as the need to keep an open path behind the dining chairs.

The large central island anchors the room, and is a work of art in its own right. Counter levels descend from stool height, to cooktop height, and down even lower for a butcher block prep area. The island is home to the cooktop and a small auxiliary sink. It also provides lots of storage, including some that is hidden away beneath the seating area.

The commission for this 4,300-square-foot residence came with significant challenges for the architects – a house had once existed on the lot but had burned down and the attempt to replace the house had stalled, leading to an abatement order and a lapse of permits.
Our first challenge was to revive the lapsed construction permit by proposing to “modify” the existing structure. The practical effect this had was to fix the footprint of the new home to the existing structure’s plan outline. Having thereby inherited the large, dense block of the original house, the new strategy became one of substituting selective areas of indoor space for outdoor courtyard.
This strategy of trading indoor space for outdoor courtyard allowed an erosion of the formerly monolithic structure into a series of distinct volumetric elements, and further suggested that the architectural pieces could cohere as a “village.” The main level is further eroded by large, glazed planes, merging indoor with outdoor, and virtually stretching the landscape across interior space. Moving the detached garage from the rear yard to beneath the new living space allowed for a 75-meter lap pool and a shaded olive garden.
The gardens include built-in seating, extensive use of ornamental grasses and Zen-like interior courtyards. A material palette of fossilized stone, bonderized-galvanized metal, and natural Douglas fir allows for the warmth desired by the wife, while providing the modernity required by the husband. Programmatically, her music room borrows from the calm and protected olive court in the rear, while his office becomes a pavilion set in the landscape, which both addresses the street and acts as a sheltering monument for the terraced entry garden.

The torrential rain of July caused the creek above this bridge in Webster Groves to flood and sweeping the bridge 1-2 feet away from its original placement. In addition, supporting posts beneath the bridge that were not originally anchored, slipped and floated away.
In order to prevent future movement of the wood bridge and to ensure proper post support, we anchored a ledger to a concrete block, replaced wood support beams, and tied all supporting elements using strong Simpson Strong Ties.
After reinforcing the structure to ensure flooding would not negatively impact the bridge, we cleaned all existing wood, replaced rotted bridge boards, and applied a clear natural stain with built-in UV protection that should protect the wood of the bridge and provide an attractive cosmetic appearance for about two years, when it will need to be refinished again.
A fun and good outcome for the project.
