The shape of the angled porch-roof, sets the tone for a truly modern entryway. This protective covering makes a dramatic statement, as it hovers over the front door. The blue-stone terrace conveys even more interest, as it gradually moves upward, morphing into steps, until it reaches the porch. Porch Detail The multicolored tan stone, used for the risers and retaining walls, is proportionally carried around the base of the house. Horizontal sustainable-fiber cement board replaces the original vertical wood siding, and widens the appearance of the facade. The color scheme — blue-grey siding, cherry-wood door and roof underside, and varied shades of tan and blue stone — is complimented by the crisp-contrasting black accents of the thin-round metal columns, railing, window sashes, and the roof fascia board and gutters. This project is a stunning example of an exterior, that is both asymmetrical and symmetrical. Prior to the renovation, the house had a bland 1970s exterior. A humble staircase rises to the occasion in this contemporary renovation in Huntington Woods. A favorite aspect of this 2018 project is the mitered stair treads and tapered risers of the lowest three steps that angle out in a delicate, slightly exaggerated fashion. The subtle acute angles add a sense of lightness and panache to the staircase. Wrapping the stairs allows the staircase to open to the great room and eliminates the need for a handrail on the great room side. A custom iron railing with walnut handrail extends from the floor all the way to the upstairs landing in a continuous fluid motion. The iron supports are adorned with parallelograms that echo the rise of the staircase and add to the lighthearted mix of disparate angles in the space. The iron rail design runs parallel with the stair stringer, creating a linear relationship between the stair and railing. An inspired pattern of interlocking hexagons on the black and white carpet runner adds playfulness and movement. A figure appears to fly up the stairs in a 1925 advertising poster by Jean d'Ylen, whimsically placed above the landing. Natural light from above floods the steps.

To meet their needs, we selected contemporary wrought iron balusters and stained the new staircase handrails the same as the refinished wood floors. Installing a durable, synthetic carpet to withstand heavy use by their beloved dogs was a must. The result is another dramatic focal point in the home. And, replacing a never played piano with a new console table and benches to pull up at larger parties, defines the path to the upstair levels.

The impressive staircase is located next to the foyer. The black wainscoting provides a dramatic backdrop for the gold pendant chandelier that hangs over the staircase. Simple black iron railing frames the stairwell to the basement and open hallways provide a welcoming flow on the main level of the home.

We recently had a client reach out to us to fabricate custom residential railings based on one of the designs in our railing gallery. The home was undergoing major renovation and once the floors were in and complete we came in to do our measurements. Please keep in mind that these final measurements can take 2-3 hours – sometimes more depending on the project. In the hills of San Anselmo in Marin County, this 5,000 square foot existing multi-story home was enlarged to 6,000 square feet with a new dance studio addition with new master bedroom suite and sitting room for evening entertainment and morning coffee. Sited on a steep hillside one acre lot, the back yard was unusable. New concrete retaining walls and planters were designed to create outdoor play and lounging areas with stairs that cascade down the hill forming a wrap-around walkway. The goal was to make the new addition integrate the disparate design elements of the house and calm it down visually. The scope was not to change everything, just the rear façade and some of the side facades. The new addition is a long rectangular space inserted into the rear of the building with new up-swooping roof that ties everything together. Clad in red cedar, the exterior reflects the relaxed nature of the one acre wooded hillside site. Fleetwood windows and wood patterned tile complete the exterior color material palate. The sitting room overlooks a new patio area off of the children’s playroom and features a butt glazed corner window providing views filtered through a grove of bay laurel trees. Inside is a television viewing area with wetbar off to the side that can be closed off with a concealed pocket door to the master bedroom. The bedroom was situated to take advantage of these views of the rear yard and the bed faces a stone tile wall with recessed skylight above. The master bath, a driving force for the project, is large enough to allow both of them to occupy and use at the same time. The new dance studio and gym was inspired for their two daughters and has become a facility for the whole family. All glass, mirrors and space with cushioned wood sports flooring, views to the new level outdoor area and tree covered side yard make for a dramatic turnaround for a home with little play or usable outdoor space previously.
