Dining room - coastal medium tone wood floor and brown floor dining room idea in Charleston with white walls

The three-level Mediterranean revival home started as a 1930s summer cottage that expanded downward and upward over time. We used a clean, crisp white wall plaster with bronze hardware throughout the interiors to give the house continuity. A neutral color palette and minimalist furnishings create a sense of calm restraint. Subtle and nuanced textures and variations in tints add visual interest. The stair risers from the living room to the primary suite are hand-painted terra cotta tile in gray and off-white. We used the same tile resource in the kitchen for the island's toe kick.

The dining room is flanked by an open air courtyard featuring a view through to kitchen beyond. The open shelving turns the corner and runs to a set of stairs leading down a half level to a bar and passage below the stair landing that leads to a concealed powder room. The closed walnut cabinetry is in the same material as the nearby staircase railing.

A view of the living room and foyer beyond. The bold orange entry door is a pleasant surprise one only sees after winding around a tall brick wall. Within the entry is a wall of walnut paneling with a hidden door leading to a large closet. The stairs lead up to a second floor landing with a glass railing that opens onto a double height space capped with a series of five over-scaled skylights.

The request from my client for this kitchen remodel was to imbue the room with a rustic farmhouse feeling, but without the usual tropes or kitsch. What resulted is a beautiful mix of refined and rural. To begin, we laid down a stunning silver travertine floor in a Versailles pattern and used the color palette to inform the rest of the space. The bleached silvery wood of the island and the cream cabinetry compliment the flooring. Of course the stainless steel appliances continue the palette, as do the porcelain backsplash tiles made to look like rusted or aged metal. The deep bowl farmhouse sink and faucet that looks like it is from a bygone era give the kitchen a sense of permanence and a connection to the past without veering into theme-park design. “Green Roof”. Deep green accents complement the wood tones in the family room. Interior Designer Phyllis Taylor says that the deer motif began unexpectedly with a trip to New York’s Chelsea where she discovered a shop the offered multiple paintings of deer and antlers.
