This courtyard leads visitors from the front of the house to the backyard. The formal feel of the front bleeds into the courtyard through the placement of shrubs and the linear outline of the courtyard. However, the softer and more playful nature of pea gravel and the natural irregular stone wall ahead begins to transition the space into a more relaxing area as you move to the backyard. Beechwood sits on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Oxfordshire. Employing high-quality materials, simple detailing and robust forms, the design produced a contemporary and sustainable home appropriate to its context. The materials used in the project push conventional design boundaries but sit together harmoniously in the woodland setting. Blue/black engineering brickwork combine with pre-weathered Corten steel cladding, enabling the house to bleed into the landscape. Implementing energy saving solutions was integral to the success of this project and was a key part of the client brief. The design followed best practice in nine categories of sustainable design: energy and CO2 emissions, water, materials, surface water run-off, waste, pollution, health and wellbeing, management and ecology. Beechwood achieved a Level 4 certificate under The Code for Sustainable Homes.

A robust, modern, riverside home with minimalist detailing that blends seamlessly into the surroundings. The home is used as a year-round weekend retreat for a family with children and as such they wanted it to be private and offer a sense of escape and freedom. The clients wanted it to be a low maintenance, energy efficient home making use of natural materials. Clad with innovative treated timber, the house nestles harmoniously into its rural, riverside setting; making the most of its context, orientation and views while minimising any impact on the surrounding area. Two opposing blocks, forming a 'T' shape in plan, taper up in height towards the river to the east and fields to the south and define the internal spaces. The open-plan living, kitchen and dining areas benefit from fully-glazed sliding doors set in a deep reveal to the south which maximises light and provides shelter above. Large windows look out over the river and a raised, cantilevered deck wraps around the east and south elevations, creating an extension to the internal space that bleeds out into the landscape beyond.

This front yard sits below street level with a hedge and trees adding to its privacy. A flagstone path to the front door expands to create a sitting area amongst the dense plantings. A combination of shade plants such as hosta, and sun plants such as sedum and lavender, give the space great texture and color. A stepping sone path leads under a tree to the side of the the house.

The footprint of the kitchen was not drastically altered; however it was fully redesigned to seamlessly integrate with the dining and living areas. Walls were removed that framed the existing layout and separated the kitchen from the adjacent rooms. The side of the cabinetry facing the dining room and living room now showcase a dramatic bar and counter seating area clad in steel panels and a 7” thick walnut countertop with hidden storage. The cabinets are white with a twist: rift cut white oak with a semi-transparent paint, allowing the natural color to slightly bleed through thus enhancing its rustic nature. Grey quartz countertops echo the abundant natural rock formations on the property further connecting the kitchen to the home and gorgeous exterior surroundings. The dining room walls are custom painted in a color-on-color birch tree motif and live edge wood slabs were chosen for both the kitchen and dining tabletops. This hidden gem in West Plano was built in 1985 with a lot of heavy wood paneling. The homeowner wanted to have a built-in that served a double purpose; a nice display cabinet for books and decorations, with a classy functional ladder to access all top items, and some storage space on the bottom for some fragile items such as china and other collectibles. We added some nice touches with tile and a custom mantel to our existing fireplace. We also included 8”x48” pecan hardwood planks with a nice custom design that bleeds and merges in a very unique transition to the kitchen tile.

We selected some darker elements throughout the design such as the stained wood floor, fireplace cladding, and reclaimed barn wood accent walls, and therefore opted to keep the kitchen cabinetry white with a twist: rift cut white oak with a semi-transparent paint, allowing the natural color to slightly bleed through thus enhancing its rustic nature.
