Designed by Randy O’Kane of Bilotta Kitchens, the inspiration for this project was an industrial farmhouse-chic look – it’s the theme throughout the client’s whole house. The client (a mother of four, running a busy household) wanted a real oasis for bathing and showering – an escape from reality. She and her husband are the type of people who actually use their tub so that was carefully selected from Victoria + Albert Baths. The existing structure of the original master bathroom included the high vaulted ceiling. Randy decided to add the reclaimed wood beams to give the room shape and bring in more of that farmhouse element. She selected a trough sink from Decolav as a contemporary twist on a horse trough. Even the porcelain floor, selected from Rye Ridge Tile, looks like wood that you would see in a barn. The countertop is Caesartstone’s Calacatta Nuvo honed. The overall palette is a contrasting mix of soothing neutrals and much darker browns and black. All fixtures are in a matte black finish, including the trim on the shower enclosure, providing a nod to the industrial side; the brushed brass lighting touches on the elegant side. The two walls with the chevron tile are really the feature of the room. The Vanity is Bilotta Collection Cabinetry in a 1” thick door in Rift Cut White Oak with Smokey Oak Stain.

We almost died of heat stroke trying to get this travertine patio fixed for this homeowner in North Scottsdale. He paid a different company to come out and replace a bunch of cracked tile. They started taking the tile out and when they realized the job was harder than they thought, they took off with his money, and never came back. Our client, Tom, found us through the Houzz website and messaged me about his project. After looking at it, Robert, our master tile technician, got started tearing out the rest of the broken tiles. That was a chore in and of itself because the previous installer decided to tile over tile! See picture below. You never know what you are going to find when you start tearing out tile! After Rob got the tile back in we came back and cleaned, honed and sealed it. This will be the LAST patio job for us until October! Kristina Arnold is a relatively new addition to the Roundtree Landscaping team. Kristina has a passion for landscaping and the outdoors, with a keen focus on native plants and learning about landscape design. Kristina is the only woman on an all man landscape maintenance crew and keeps up with everyone when it comes to all types of work, from mowing to loading! Kristina focuses on the detailed aspects of horticultural plant maintenance to keep our clients properties looking their absolute best. You may not always be aware of all the fine-tuning Kristina provides when it comes to plant care, but if you would certainly notice if her handy work was missing.
Before Kristina joined Roundtree, she worked in several different fields, including the restaurant industry and retail. With a desire to educate herself about landscape design and to work in the landscaping industry, Kristina decided to take the opportunity to meet with Roundtree owner, Johnette Taylor, at a local meet-and-greet at North Haven Gardens. After a great first meeting, Kristina was later hired on as a part of horticultural services to learn the ropes of landscape maintenance and plant care.
As a part of the Roundtree team, Kristina continues to educate herself with the goal of pursuing a degree in landscape design or landscape architecture. Kristina feels it is important to always keep learning and loves taking classes that help her advance her knowledge and skills. She is currently studying to become a certified landscape association with TNLA (Texas Nursery and Landscape Association).
What’s Kristina’s favorite part of her job? Detailed plant pruning. She loves working with overgrown plants to transition them from ragged or untamed into beautiful landscape specimens. Her favorite plant (at the moment) is pink magenta Cosmos. She loves the graceful stems and orderly – yet flamboyant – flower petals.
Fun fact about Kristina: She is a big fan and follower of all the National Food Days. In fact, if you ask her, she will tell you there are only three days out of the year that are not assigned to a specific food! The day of this interview was National Gingerbread Day, and Kristina was excited about the upcoming applesauce cake and chocolate ice cream days!

Kitchen cabinets are the pillars of any kitchen. If you want to have a good kitchen, then you must think deeply about the kind of cabinets you are going to install. Apart from the type of cabinets, color plays a major role in determining the appearance of your kitchen. You can either go for light or dark options.
How dark can you go?
There are bold homeowners who have black kitchen cabinets installed in their homes. This is an extreme decision that has great benefits and a few cons. You might want to consider the benefits and the drawbacks before you decide to go dark on your kitchen cabinets.
The benefits of black kitchen cabinets
1. Sophisticated
One of the reasons why black kitchen cabinets are great is that they are sophisticated. They are dramatic in nature and show the ultimate sense of boldness in a homeowner. It is a color option that is used to make a statement of affluence and sophistication.
2. Don’t show dirt
Another reason why you may want to have this kind of cabinetry option is that they do not show dirt. Unlike light kitchen cabinets, the dark ones can hide dirt in the wood. This saves you the energy of having to wipe your cabinets often. However, you need to set a routine for cleaning your cabinets as they may get permanent stains if you don’t take care of them.
3. Perceived as warm
If you are looking for kitchen cabinets that are warm, you can opt for black kitchen cabinets. They are perceived to be warmer and friendlier because they absorb light, unlike light kitchen cabinets that reflect light away.
4. Unique
Black kitchen cabinets are unique. It is rare for you to find homeowners who are bold enough to install black kitchen cabinets. This means that they are used to express a unique personality.
Drawbacks of black kitchen cabinets
1. Make the kitchen look smaller
One of the drawbacks of black kitchen cabinets is that they make the kitchen appear smaller than it is.
2. Require more lighting
They need a robust lighting scheme that will help in creating light in the kitchen. Therefore, homeowners must invest in additional lighting in the kitchen if they intend to have black kitchen cabinets installed.
With these pros and cons, it is easier to decide if you are going to opt for black kitchen cabinets or go safe with the light kitchen cabinets.

In the main bedroom and main en suite Cheryl decided to keep the colour palette very neutral so as to make the sweeping views of the ocean the hero of this bedroom and en suite with its large glass doors and windows leading onto a wrap around balcony on the first floor.
Lots of very textured fabrics were used in a monochromatic scheme with pops of muted blues.
Black metal lamps sit atop the custom made bedside pedestals and gives the bedroom its ambient lighting.
A large mirror reflects back the only pop of bright colours in this space, which is a modern take of a lion in the form of an oil painting by Gerart Snyman.
Gorgeous crisp white egyptian cotton adorns the very inviting king size bed. The bed base is upholstered in the same fabric as the headboard.
A free standing bath sits next to large glass sliding doors from which one can take in the breathtaking views of the beach and the ocean.
The double shower also has views of the ocean.
Every aspect of these areas have been carefully considered to optimise the stunning views.
