Yavapai Cabin sits in the middle of a steep mountain in an Arizona conifer forest. A clearing on the slope was made by the owner, with a vision to create a cabin immersed within the tree canopies. Upward Architecture approached the project with two design options, exploring different ways to bring filtered light into the living spaces. Both options propose a plan with a central kitchen and living space, with sleeping suites on either side. A simple shed roof opens up to the commanding views of this Yavapai County forest, from all rooms.

Inspired by Cape styles, this new Natick client desired an updated look with a better traffic pattern that was more open with smarter storage. By removing the peninsula, island seating reduced their sons fighting because now they weren’t competing for stools. They also fulfilled their dream of a coffee bar. The stove, backsplash and attractive hood are now a beautiful focal point from the family room view. They worked with our partner, Amany Design Studio, to select a clean, seamless look. This busy family now has a hidden command central and charging station. Custom-designed, pull-out shelving created organization and maximum storage within the new cabinets.

This breathtaking kitchen remodel strikes the perfect balance between timeless traditional elegance and modern culinary functionality. Three oversized geometric polished nickel pendant lanterns hang from the tray ceiling, drawing the eye up while flooding the space with ambient light. The kitchen flows seamlessly into a sun-drenched breakfast room wrapped in plantation shutters and blue-and-white toile valances, where a warm wood round dining table grounds the casual dining area. A dedicated butler's pantry niche off the main kitchen provides an integrated wine cooler, glass-front display cabinetry, a herringbone marble backsplash, and a dedicated coffee station — a self-contained entertaining hub that keeps the main kitchen surfaces clear and serene.

Retaining all the character of a 1923 whimsical while expanding to meet the needs of an active family of five. This classic and timeless transformation strikes a beautiful balance between the charm of the existing home and the opportunities to realize something custom. First, we reclaimed the attached one-car garage for a much-needed command central kitchen - organized in zones for cooking, dining, gathering, scheduling, homework and entertaining. With a devotion to design, a stunning, custom, nickel Ann Morris pot rack was chosen as a focal point, appliances were concealed with painted, raised-panel cabinetry and finishes like white quartzite countertops, white fireclay sinks and dark stained floors added just the right amount of light and color. Outside the bustle of the family space, the previous kitchen became a butler’s pantry and richly-paneled library for reading, relaxing and enjoying cigars. The addition of a mud room, family room, and a wonderful space we lovingly call “The Jewel Room” for its heightened luxurious detail, completed the perfect remodel – opening up new space for the busy children, while providing comfortable respites for their happy parents.

A modern version of a mid-century His and Hers grand master bathroom was created to include all the amenities and nothing left behind! This bathroom has so much noticeable and hidden “POW” that commands its peaceful spa feeling with a lot of attitude. Maintaining ultra-clean lines yet delivering ample design interest at every detail, This bathroom is eclectically a one of a kind luxury statement. The concept in the laundry room was to create a simple, easy to use and clean space with ample storage and a place removed from the central part of the home to house the necessity of the cats and their litter box needs. There was no need for glamour in the laundry room yet we were able to create a simple highly utilitarian space. If there is one room in the home that requires frequent visitors to thoroughly enjoy with a huge element of surprise, it’s the powder room! This is a room where you know that eventually, every guest will visit. Knowing this, we created a bold statement with layers of intrigue that would leave ample room for fun conversation with your guests upon their prolonged exit.
