Located in the outskirts of Alajuela, Coyol is a humid weather area full of lush green land-scapes and stunning views. The clients were looking for a house able to integrate public areas, front, and backyard within one single space. Twix House is conceptualized by two main curved dynamic shapes, which create one whole. Two twin L-shaped volumes are looking to opposite sides: sunrise facade and sunset facade, resulting in an S-shaped form of the entire house. Both contain the main and secondary bedrooms of the house, giving them unique views of the Central Valley mountains. The main access entrance opens onto a double height lobby, crossed by the bridge in the center, and a curved staircase to the left. The main public area has a double height space, which is an open plan, containing the living room, dining room, and a kitchen. These spaces are connected by slid-ing doors that lead to the terrace, becoming a key element of the house, transforming the social areas and allowing for direct communication between indoor and outdoor spaces. The private areas of the house are located on the second floor: two bedrooms and a second living room. These are connected by a third volume, which is an interior bridge, articulating the house and integrating all the downstairs and upstairs areas together. Due to the particularities of the climate zone, a special attention had to be paid to ensuring that the house remains fresh. Therefore, as a part of the process, different passive design strategies for tropical climate areas were implemented. For instance, the roof of the bridge overlaps the rest of the roof creating a gap, which acts as a monitor letting the hot air leave. Apart from that, the orientation of the building allows for cross ventilation to take place, resulting in cool and refreshing temperatures in-doors, despite the daily tropical heat.

This European custom asymmetrical Georgian-revival mansion features 7 bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms with skylights, 3 kitchens, dining room, formal living room, and 2 laundry rooms; all with radiant heating throughout and central air conditioning and HRV systems. The backyard is a beautiful 6500 sqft private park with koi pond featured in Home & Garden Magazine. The main floor features a classic cross-hall design, family room, nook, extra bedroom, den with closet, and Euro & Wok kitchens completed with Miele / Viking appliances. The basement has a private home theatre with a 3-D projector, guest bedroom, and a 1-bedroom in-law suite with separate entrance.

This outdoor bar features a built-in Blackstone griddle seamlessly integrated into a custom masonry structure. The layout was designed to support high-heat cooking while maintaining clear prep space, safe clearances, and smooth guest flow — turning everyday cooking into a true outdoor entertaining experience.

Ultimately, in keeping with our not so big house philosophy, our clients decided to bump out the kitchen 3 feet to make the kitchen large enough to include an island. The soapstone countertops were quarried in Virginia and sealed with a matte finish to retain its natural quality; a butcher block area was recessed into the soapstone island for a central workspace. Studio Terrain recreated this outdoor entertaining after a major home extension. Taking advantage of sweeping 180 degree views of the Puget sound, Orca Pods, Humpback whales and the Olympic mountains, the design allows for maximum view corridors from the inside while still providing space for 40+ guests. Utilizing a louvered roof system and overhead heat for four seasons entertaining, the wood fired pizza oven provides a central gathering point year round. The lawn was engineered to the same specs as world class soccer fields providing fast draining lawn use in the wettest seasons. A clean concrete lawn edge is actually a hidden structural retaining wall with pin piles to stabilize the slope edge.

Our client’s intension was to make this bathroom suite a very specialized spa retreat. She envisioned exquisite, highly crafted components and loved the colors gold and purple. We were challenged to mix contemporary, traditional and rustic features. Also on the wish-list were a sizeable wardrobe room and a meditative loft-like retreat. Hydronic heated flooring was installed throughout. The numerous features in this project required replacement of the home’s plumbing and electrical systems. The cedar ceiling and other places in the room replicate what is found in the rest of the home. The project encompassed 400 sq. feet. Features found at one end of the suite are new stained glass windows – designed to match to existing, a Giallo Rio slab granite platform and a Carlton clawfoot tub. The platform is banded at the floor by a mosaic of 1″ x 1″ glass tile. Near the tub platform area is a large walnut stained vanity with Contemporary slab door fronts and shaker drawers. This is the larger of two separate vanities. Each are enhanced with hand blown artisan pendant lighting. A custom fireplace is centrally placed as a dominant design feature. The hammered copper that surrounds the fireplace and vent pipe were crafted by a talented local tradesman. It is topped with a Café Imperial marble. A lavishly appointed shower is the centerpiece of the bathroom suite. The many slabs of granite used on this project were chosen for the beautiful veins of quartz, purple and gold that our client adores. Two distinct spaces flank a small vanity; the wardrobe and the loft-like Magic Room. Both precisely fulfill their intended practical and meditative purposes. A floor to ceiling wardrobe and oversized built-in dresser keep clothing, shoes and accessories organized. The dresser is topped with the same marble used atop the fireplace and inset into the wardrobe flooring. The Magic Room is a space for resting, reading or just gazing out on the serene setting. The reading lights are Oil Rubbed Bronze. A drawer within the step up to the loft keeps reading and writing materials neatly tucked away. Within the highly customized space, marble, granite, copper and art glass come together in a harmonious design that is organized for maximum rejuvenation that pleases our client to not end! The major transformation involved the removal of the built-in tub, which significantly opened up the space. The result is a generously sized, meticulously detailed shower featuring a centralized niche and window, complemented by thoughtfully laid-out tiles to accommodate the shower door. Moreover, the entire primary bath now features heated floors including the shower floor. The creation of the niche was carefully planned, allowing for full tiling up to the bottom and a one-tile-high niche. This lakefront property set in a nice quiet cove on Lake Sam Rayburn. The entire project was planned and built by carter & company for large family events. The 3 1/2 level structure is designed with craftsman influences and functions well as a large fishing lodge designed for year-round entertaining. Ground level includes outdoor kitchen/dining area,separate outdoor living/gaming area with custom cypress beamed furniture built by carter & company. A 1700 Sq deck overlooks beautiful Sam Rayburn and garage doors open across front and rear elevations to create open breeze ways throughout all downstairs areas. Second floor includes living dining and master suite .an enclosed screen porch extends all the way across the lake side with an old wooden cistern structure which houses an outdoor hot tub. The screen porch has it own 5 ton central unit which is only shared with the downstairs shop area.it also has a 50,000 but ventless fireplace on one end which creates a ( winter area ) on the screen porch. The open spaces of living/dining also share aux heating via early 1900's Wood stove (pot belly) which was refurbished and was originally used in a girls dormitory somewhere in Colorado. Kitchen amenities include professional series equipment, a baking center, dumb waiter to downstairs kitchen, pressed tin ceilings. The entire structure touts custom made knotty alder moldings cabinets and doors. The interior walls are also slatted knotty alder with paint stained finishes. The third floor houses 3 guest bedrooms 1 full bath 1 jack and Jill bath, a 10 x 10 sleeping tent with chandelier, queen mattress, and lake view window. Attic does not exist, instead we incorporated open air vaulted ceilings with turnbuckle collar ties and an upper sleeping loft for kids accessed by custom ships ladder. Other areas of interest include front open air materials lift, 100 ft redneck water slide assembled during summertime and rolling boat dock for lake activities.

The Aaron Peck house is in the heart of Wickford Village in North Kingstown and dates to the late eighteenth century. The original structure was a modest storey and a half gambrel with later saltbox and contemporary kitchen additions. While the house had been worked on extensively over the years, it was built over a shallow, unventilated crawlspace and all previous work had overlooked addressing the decay that two hundred and thirty years of wet, stale air can have on the floor framing and house sills. When Picus Woodwrights was engaged, we could push against one side of the house and feel the walls move on the opposite side. The homeowners reached out to us to design and build a master suite on the second floor that would provide modern amenities while remaining sensitive to the original features of the house. However, we all quickly realized that before we could take this part of the project on, the house would need significant structural work and the long-closed crawlspace would need to be opened. This gave us the opportunity to not only replace any failed framing and add a full foundation but to upgrade all of the utilities and add spray foam insulation, as well. We also restored the original single-hung windows and added discrete central air and heat to the first and second floors. Picus managed not only the project budget, design and construction but also the administrative oversight that comes with a project in need of extensive structural work located on the water and in a historic district. Ultimately, we restored or rebuilt most of the interior of the house and, in so doing, addressed both the needs of the client and the needs of the building. While in construction, we sometimes fondly and sometimes wryly referred to the house as a Faberge egg or a ship-in-a-bottle.

The project «Romantic Classics» (classic interior design of S-Studio, Kyiv) apartments in the heart of Kiev. Apartments were designed as a harmonious whole space in the classical style, decorated with qualitative materials and fitted out with modern equipment: system of «Smart Light», home cinema, house appliances, central air conditioning, heated floor, etc. Replanning of the apartment was done in accordance with the wishes of customers: combined kitchen and living room have been turned into studio, and a dressing room and a niche have been created for a spacious hallway closet. The style of design project is a romantic classic. The interior was made in soft pastel colors with elegant decorative ornaments and floral patterns. The traditional stucco elements were applied in the decoration of the classical apartments: cornices, moldings, ceiling rosettes, caissons and a dome decorative motives of which are repeated in the elements of furniture, which are very popular in the classical interior design. Natural walling materials of Lincrusta were used in decorative panels of the bedroom and hall, a wood-panels office were used in the individual design of the study, textile wallpaper of trendy European manufacturers were selected, matching the overall design of the apartment were chosen for the living room and other rooms. Besides, there were elaborated massive parquet floor design and the floor in the living room was decorated with a panno- vignette which was specially created for the classical interior. The dressing table seperates the bedroom area, which creates a cozy place for a mistress. Daughter’s room was decorated in the style of glamor, selected by her request. Repair work was supervised by Nadiya Samokhina. This project began with a sketch from our client that they'd received from a friend. It gave us a general idea of what they wanted but adjustments needed to be made for us to keep the renovation within budget. There were plenty of challenges in the designing and building stages. Early on, we learned the main structure of this 1940s house was encroaching the building restriction line. To remain within zoning limits, we needed to have two corners of the new addition slightly out of square. The new structure, cantilevered on both sides, required a heavy 45-degree angle beam to carry the load of the second floor and the roof. We equipped the house with central AC and expanded the existing hydronic heating system into the new space. The completed addition resulted in a shared music room and in-law suite with a bathroom on the first floor, and a master bedroom, bath, and hall bath on the second floor.
