This 4-drawer alder base cabinet (which matches the home’s kitchen cabinetry) provides generous storage. Its laminate banjo counter extends over the toilet, providing extra counter space. The toilet location was kept where it was in the original hall bath -- only turning it 90 degrees – this saved plumbing costs. A grab bar on the left improves safety.

DOWNLOAD NOW   One of my very favorite parts of the design process is space planning and considering all the possible floor plan solutions at the beginning stages of the project. What works for one person as a solution may not be the best solution for the next. What you think you want going into the process, may change once all the space planning options are considered. This was exactly the case for this family. They thought they really wanted an island configuration. Once we figured out the flow of the work triangle and saw how great a large peninsula would work for the family, we proceeded along those lines. The peninsula not only works great for food prep, it also allows more of a traditional table seating versus an island with everyone lined up in a row — not so great for daily dinner conversation. To the right of that is a counter depth fridge and a speed oven which gives some flexibility with cooking and reheating smaller meals instead of having to heat the entire oven. An induction cooktop with its easy to clean surface keeps the space looking clean and tidy. Induction heats very quickly to high temperatures so is also wonderful to cook on. To the right of cooktop is a long stretch of countertop perfect for prep space. Storage was very important to the homeowners. We took our time discussing where spice pull outs and tray dividers would be located, how the corner storage would be addressed and the location of the other items such as trash and recycling cans. We worked as many drawers as possible into the space, as I always recommend drawers over doors and/or roll outs as they offer the most flexibility and ease of use. Customizing these details is time well spent as having a place for everything and everything in its place, just like Mom said, really is the key to a functional and professionally designed kitchen. The talls and wall cabinets are white acrylic which combined with the white marble look quartz countertops and full height backsplash keep the room feeling light, bright and airy. The wood toned base cabinets are made of a textured laminate that has the look of wood but is a very easy to maintain product. Brushed gold metal on the hardware, faucet and chandelier add a warm touch and ties into the blond maple flooring. The neighboring breakfast room was also remodeled as part of the project and houses a small coffee station. We designed under cabinet lighting to fit this kitchen. LED strip lights are below each upper cabinet and two puck lights above the stove top for efficient task lighting and an attractive light splash against the bead board. This fantastic Victorian tiled hallway floor in Oxford was in good physical condition for its age; however like any sealed floor the sealer had worn down with use and with dirt becoming trapped in the pores of the tile it was now becoming difficult to clean effectively and had become dull and un-inviting. It was now due a really good deep clean and re-seal. Oxford as I’m sure your aware has a rich history and is home to one of the world’s best universities, so not surprisingly many houses here have interesting floors such as this one. Upon my arrival at the house, my first task was to protect the skirting boards, as well as the wooden floors leading into the other rooms. I then mixed a solution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean, a versatile, high alkaline cleaner combined 50:50 with Tile Doctor NanoTech HBU, a particularly strong cleaner that utilises nano-sized particles to penetrate into areas of the stone that standard products simply cannot reach. I applied the solution to the surface and allowed it to soak for thirty minutes, allowing it to get to work on the ingrained dirt so it could be easily removed. Following this, I agitated the solution with a soft brush attached to a rotary scrubbing machine. I then applied more solution and left it for a further thirty minutes, before scrubbing this into the tiles using a black pad fitted to the rotary machine. After the clean had been completed, I rinsed the entire floor multiple times and vacuumed up the resulting slurry using a wet-vac machine. I left the floor overnight, allowing the surface enough time to dry and returned then next day to seal the floor, checking first to ensure the tiles had dried. To seal the floor I used several coatings of Tile Doctor Seal & Go. Seal & Go which is a water-based, topical sealer that is suitable for use on unsealed, porous surfaces such as Victorian tile, textured Quarry, Slate, and Sandstone; being water based you don’t get the smell so it’s much more pleasant to work with. As you can see from the before and after photos, the result was an aesthetically pleasing and – most importantly – clean, Victorian tiled floor. Open Door Building Solutions chose Canyon Creek Cabinet Company’s Cornerstone Collection framed cabinetry on the left perimeter: the Valley Forge solid door style in Rustic Alder with a chocolate glaze, matte sheen and full Artisan Package 2 distressing. Among the kitchen highlights are a lazy susan, a super susan, two double trash can bases – one bottom mount and one top mount – a vertical lift cabinet above the microwave, and a pull-out pantry to the right of the microwave. There is also a farmhouse base cabinet housing a Kohler Whitehaven apron-front kitchen sink with Hansgrohe Talis C 2-Spray HighArc Kitchen Faucet. The kitchen also has a tray base cabinet, base linen cabinet, roll-outs and plenty of drawer space. We added additional seating to this space with a breakfast bar and various installed finished cabinetry sides in the kitchen to include 1/4”, 3/8”, flush and finished furniture ends. On the right side of the kitchen, Open Door Building Solutions chose Canyon Creek’s Emerson door in maple wood in Cardinal Paint with a licorice patina, and also used distressing and Artisan Package 2. We designed the refrigerator and bar area with a mix of the Cornerstone and Millennia frameless collection with a pantry end angle, panels for the refrigerator and an “X” type wine rack, accenting the whole piece with a small cabinet for knick-knacks with a rain glass acrylic insert.

This project shows the remodel of a small 1950's vintage home master bathroom. 8"" x 18" Calcutta gold marble tile was used on the shower walls and floor wall base and ceramic gray penny tile on the floor. Shower includes curbless pan / floor, dual shower boxes, frameless glass slider, trough duel fixture sink and chrome fixtures.

The table top was fabricated by Seth Woods of Woods Refinishing in Richmond, VA. The reclaimed steel base was fabricated by Small Axe Forge of Richmond, VA. The bar height allows for tv viewing and ideal social gatherings. John Magor Photography

This 1850s farmhouse in the country outside NY underwent a dramatic makeover! Dark wood molding was painted white, shiplap added to the walls, wheat-colored grasscloth installed, and carpets torn out to make way for natural stone and heart pine flooring. We based the palette on quintessential American colors: red, white, and navy. Rooms that had been dark were filled with light and became the backdrop for cozy fabrics, wool rugs, and a collection of art and curios. Corian was used on the side, top and over the curb for the curved (radius) glass block shower wall. The shower base was made with a "hot mop" process but could also have been done with a glass reinforced plastic base.

There is potentially a lot of storage space in a base corner cabinet, unfortunately you have to be a contortionist to get at the goods stored in it. Mid Continent/Norcraft Cabinetry is trying to make that access a whole lot easier with this new design. The Blind Corner Cloud features trays that maneuver outside the cabinet eliminating the need to get down on all fours and crawl inside.
