Located on a lovely lake in the Kazabazua area of Quebec, this 3+2 bedroom, 2-1/2 bath, 4-season cottage is based on an inspiration plan our clients brought to us. It has been significantly customized to suit the young family. They enjoy both summer and winter sports — wakeboarding, kayaking, biking, hiking, downhill skiing, and snowmobiling — and love to entertain family and friends. The family spends as much time as possible at their lakefront property and the cottage design includes everything you would expect in a modern home. The open-concept kitchen, dining room, and great room feature a wall of windows towards the lake and a fireplace with built-ins. The dining area easily accommodates the family and visitors for meals overlooking the lake. An extensive deck off the dining room provides both a covered and open area and the spacious sunroom will comfortably seat a large group and extend the summer season into spring and fall. Along with two guest rooms, the walkout basement features a large rec room with lots of windows for a view of the lake. Abundant storage space includes a room for sporting goods, a pantry, and a massive walk-in closet. 2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY HONORABLE MENTION AWARD WINNER The existing master bathroom in this home was vintage Seventies. The small, 5’x8’ room contained a tub, a toilet and a small vanity. Just outside was a wasted dressing area and doors to a closet. Tired of the look, the homeowner wanted a contemporary space with all the amenities that a new bathroom has to offer. To meet their needs, the remodeling team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes redid the space, installed double vanities, increased the size of the shower and upgraded the materials. The new design combined the dressing area, some of closet area and the bathroom to create a much bigger bathroom. The tub was removed, the toilet relocated and a large corner shower with built-in bench and shelving was installed. A 60” leaded glass door (pocket door) was installed as the bathroom entrance to provide more light. Heated flooring was installed under new tumbled marble flooring for extra comfort. Use of tumbled marble in the shower floor, walls and bathroom surround was tastefully designed and outlined with rope and chair rails. The heavy glass custom shower enclosure allows a clear viewing of decoratively laid marbles. The end result lets the clients spend more time in their bathroom which is beautiful and cleverly designed to fit their lifestyles.

As a leading Naperville contractor, Carmody Construction often gets called upon to complete total remodels of outdated hall bathrooms. While hall bathrooms aren’t necessarily a place where homeowners want to spend a lot of money, we often forget how much use they receive. So, it’s important to make them inviting and comfortable. We recently completed a remodel of a large hall bathroom in Naperville in which our homeowners wanted a warm and cozy contemporary design. We started the job with completely gutting the previous outdated bathroom. After carefully demoing the previous bathroom, we began by adding a relaxing jetted tub surrounded by multiple types of tile. We also added a tiled cutout storage shelf for shower and bath accessories. These cutouts are becoming very popular with our clients and are essential when planning a new bathroom. Next we moved on to install a suspended tile dual vanity top with bronze sinks and black fixtures. Because this vanity does not have a base or legs for support, it is secured to the wall with 2x4s and large lag bolts. Finally, we installed a tile floor in a diagonal pattern and trimmed out the walls with matching tile trim all the way around.

Our client came to us with a desire to take an overgrown, neglected space and transform it into a clean contemporary backyard for the family to enjoy. Having had less than stellar experiences with other contractors, they wanted to find a trustworthy company; One that would complement their style and provide excellent communication. They saw a JRP banner at their son's baseball game at Westlake High School and decided to call. After meeting with the team, they knew JRP was the firm they needed to give their backyard a complete overhaul. With a focus on sleek, clean lines, this contemporary backyard is captivating. The outdoor family room is a perfect blend of beauty, form, and function. JRP reworked the courtyard and dining area to create a space for the family to enjoy together. An outdoor pergola houses a media center and lounge. Restoration Hardware low profile furniture provides comfortable seating while maintaining a polished look. The adjacent barbecue is perfect for crafting up family dinners to enjoy amidst a Southern California sunset. Before renovating, the landscaping was an unkempt mess that felt overwhelming. Synthetic grass and concrete decking was installed to give the backyard a fresh feel while offering easy maintenance. Gorgeous hardscaping takes the outdoor area to a whole new level. The resurfaced free-form pool joins to a lounge area that's perfect for soaking up the sun while watching the kids swim. Hedges and outdoor shrubs now maintain a clean, uniformed look. A tucked-away area taken over by plants provided an opportunity to create an intimate outdoor dining space. JRP added wooden containers to accommodate touches of greenery that weren't overwhelming. Bold patterned statement flooring contrasts beautifully against a neutral palette. Additionally, our team incorporated a fireplace for a feel of coziness. Once an overlooked space, the clients and their children are now eager to spend time outdoors together. We had previously opened up the space between the kitchen and family room for a better flow and use of space for the family. Now it came time to really make dramatic changes for visual impact and comfort so that everyone including the three children would want to spend time together here. We raised a new fireplace to be able to sit on the hearth, added transom windows for much needed light, and the custom trim on the fireplace wall was the wow factor to be seen from the foyer. --- This Moorestown, NJ, interior design project was completed by Lenore Frances Homes & Interiors. Transitional Architectural Theatre Lighting & Interior Design This Batman themed theater was not part of the original theater plans. I was hired by the owners to do lighting design for their new construction home. In my first preliminary lighting plan presentation the husband expressed his passion for a Batman themed theater and showed me an image of a Batman themed theater he liked. Which he followed up to say it was out of his budget. I was hired for lighting design. What the owners did not know was that I have an interior design degree. I asked what amount he was willing to spend for a Batman themed theatre. I knew I could design the theatre for a quarter of the cost of the theatre he had shown me. I felt comfortable saying I could design lighting and interiors for the theatre within their budget. I proceeded with bringing in my team of artists to review the images of his Batman comic magazine collection that had to be in the theater: Batcave, Wayne Manor, Lincoln Penney, Bat phone and the Joker. As the images indicate, we succeeded in designing and installing the Batman themed theatre to meet the client's criteria. At the owner’s request: Linear LEDs lit the Batcave faux wall murals of stone and Wayne Manor aged wood columns, custom crystal wall sconces, and a library with a life size Batman costume hidden behind a false bookcase. A false wooden window with a Gotham City Mural of the Bat signal were revealed by using ultraviolet black lights. It was a fun project but could not have been accomplished without a team of excellent artists, building contractors, A.V. control company, millwork fabricators and electricians. Even if it is a just simple accent wall painted in a color that speaks to you, or a complete renovation of your cabinets to achieve the kitchen of your dreams, interior design allows you to create an environment that is both personal and comfortable. That is exactly how interior designer and founder of Design Exchange Sean Carlson Perry feels about what he does for a living. “The reason that I love designing spaces, and value the impact of space design on people, is the way the spaces make us feel, the visceral appeal of good design. Good design should stimulate the senses and generate an emotionally engaging experience. As a designer, I get to massage and sculpt people’s experience of space!” Perry shared with us. In late 2017, the Paintzen team connected with Perry regarding a very special design project he was working on. Design Exchange was renovating, redesigning and re-furnishing The Ali Forney Center. The Ali Forney Center, based in New York City, is the largest and most comprehensive organization dedicated to housing homeless LGBTQ youth. Nearly 40% of the homeless youth population is LGBTQ. Homeless LGBTQ youth are eight times more likely to experience violence, discrimination, and suicide. AFC houses 124 youths each night and provides services to over 1,400 homeless young people per year. Although the organization does an incredible job to provide safety and shelter to homeless youth, Perry and his team felt the space itself could use some updating and could feel more welcoming. Rooms were dark, cold, and lacked proper storage. Furniture was in poor shape and didn’t work. The rooms were being under-utilized; overall, there was so much more that could be done within the walls of the AFC that could be improved using interior design & paint! We at Paintzen were excited to partner with Design Exchange to do our part in this transformation. The dark, paneled walls were re-painted white. This entirely opened up the space, making it brighter, warmer and more welcoming. The white walls also served as a much better backdrop for smart lighting, as well as for the furniture, wall decor, and new flooring. Beyond painting, Perry and his team used FLOR carpet tiles for durability in a bright Fuchsia shade for a pop of color. They created a more functional layout to maximize the space and make better use of its architectural details and added new furniture including lamps, tables, throws, a sofa, a TV and a Roku to make the space beautiful, and even fun. “Design increases connection and community,” Perry told us. “When we revamp a shelter space, history tells us that the residents spend more time in the space, more time with their peers, building connections and community; a greater sense of home.” Perry’s goal was to create an environment that set its residents up for success by improving their quality of life, outlook and self-esteem. “This isn’t extreme home makeover (although I wish I had that budget!). It’s about improving the aesthetics of the space to create a better environment and experience for people who are going through challenging times. I’ve been lucky enough to have an amount of work that allows me to donate a portion of profits to Design Exchange Projects.” Sean Carlson Perry founded Design Exchange as a way to use his talent, passion, and skills to help those who are struggling, or in a place of immediate need. He was searching to bring deeper meaning and a humanitarian component to his work. Perry has worked with clients in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. “Good design—functionally, aesthetically and ergonomically—promotes a better quality of life.” This is a mantra that describes why Perry does what he does through Design Exchange, working to help the underserved of New York City and other cities across the country. “I grew up gay in Nebraska, and have gone through some hard times when I was younger, but I can’t imagine going through what these kids go through – rejection from family, being kicked out of the house for being who they are, homeless and having nowhere else to turn,” said Perry. “Luckily, there is The Ali Forney Center. Doing these projects for AFC strikes close to home for me, so they are extra special and close to my heart.”
