For an 11-year-old moving across the country and starting middle school, a great new room can mean a haven and hideout. She said she dug green, and we went with that and arrived here: a funky mix of old and new, lots of space for books, and a cozy place to read. She loves it, and we designed it to grow up with her.

The owners of this charming Spanish-style home wanted an oasis in their small backyard. In just 1,400 square feet, not only did we give them a pool and spa, but also an inviting area for lounging and eating, created from repurposed vintage brick. Their love of Mexican design is seen in a new Talavera-tiled outdoor shower area. Softly billowing California native plants mingle with a growing collection of cacti and succulents.

This room belongs to a little girl who loves horses and surfing. It was a 10 x 10 x 10 blank canvas that the parents wanted to keep simple but maximize storage so that it could grow with their little ones tastes and needs. To accomplish this we did white built-ins to the ceiling and added a trundle bed for sleep overs. The colors were pulled from the Ikat quilt the little girl picked out.

An unused area of lawn has been repurposed as a meditation garden. The meandering path of limestone step stones weaves through a birch grove. The matrix planting of carex grasses is interspersed with flowering natives throughout the season. Fall is spectacular with the blooming of aromatic asters.

A retired client wanted to jazz up the entrance to her home but leave the orchard, veggie beds and hardscape the way it was. Since she does all the maintenance herself, I wanted to make sure she wouldn't have too many weeds so we used the winter months to sheet mulch the area, killing the massive amount of existing weeds & enriching the hard soil. This worked beautifully. We added a flagstone pathway with Dymondia between the stones and a small area for her new bench to sit and enjoy the garden. She didn't want plants under her messy tree, so we decorated that area with pots. She has a huge deer & gopher problem which is why she hangs the white ribbons to scare away the deer from her fruit trees.

A tiny outdoor space was made to feel larger by replacing the lawn with paved paths and a courtyard. New steps replaced a sloping path to the front door. This home now has great street appeal and the courtyard provides a pretty flower filled living space throughout the year. There is even a small vegetable box squeezed in.

A Philadelphia suburban Main Line bi-level condo is home to a contemporary collection of art and furnishings. The light filled neutral space is warm and inviting and serves as a backdrop to showcase this couple’s growing art collection. Great use of color for accents, custom furniture and an eclectic mix of furnishings add interest and texture to the space. Che Interiors worked closely with our client to plan, design, and implement a renovation of two children’s rooms, create a mudroom with laundry area in an unused downstairs space, renovate a kitchenette area, and create a home office space in a downstairs living room by adding floor to ceiling room dividers. As the children were growing so were their needs and we took this into account when planning for both kids’ rooms. As one child was graduating to a big kids room the other was moving into their siblings nursery. We wanted to update the nursery so that it became something new and unique to its new inhabitant. For this room we repurposed a lot of the furniture, repainted all the walls, added a striking outer-space whale wallpaper that would grow with the little one and added a few new features; a toddlers busy board with fun twists and knobs to encourage brain function and growth, a few floor mats for rolling around, and a climbing arch that could double as a artist work desk as the little grows. Downstairs we created a whimsical big kids room by repainting all the walls, building a custom bookshelf, sourcing the coolest toddler bed with trundle for sleepovers, featured a whimsical wonderland wallpaper, adding a few animal toy baskets, we sourced large monstera rugs, a toddlers table with chairs, fun colorful felt hooks and a few climbing foam pieces for jumping and rolling on. For the kitchenette, we worked closely with the General Contractor to repaint the cabinets, add handle pulls, and install new mudroom and laundry furniture. We carried the kitchenette green color to the bathroom cabinets and to the floor to ceiling room dividers for the home office space. Lastly we brought in an organization team to help de-clutter and create a fluid everything-has-its-place system that would make our client’s lives easier.

The pasture wall has a shelving unit cloaked as another tree in the field offering opened and closed cubbies for books or toys. The sink and craft area offers a home to all the kids craft supplies nestled right into the countertop with colorful containers and buckets. Growth: While this playroom provides fun and creative options for children from 2-12 it can adapt and grow with this family as their children grow and their interests or needs change. The myWall system is developed to offer easy and immediate customization with simple adjustments every element of the wall can be moved offering endless possibilities. The full myWall structure can be moved along with the family if necessary. The sink offers steps for the small children but as they grow they can be removed. Safety: The playroom is designed to keep the main space open to allow for creative and safe playtime without obstacles. The myWall system uses a custom locking mechanism to ensure that all elements are securely locked into place not to fall or become loose from wear. Inspiration for a small transitional dark wood floor bedroom remodel in Montreal with white walls

THEME The main theme for this room is an active, physical and personalized experience for a growing boy. This was achieved with the use of bold colors, creative inclusion of personal favorites and the use of industrial materials. FOCUS The main focus of the room is the 12 foot long x 4 foot high elevated bed. The bed is the focal point of the room and leaves ample space for activity within the room beneath. A secondary focus of the room is the desk, positioned in a private corner of the room outfitted with custom lighting and suspended desktop designed to support growing technical needs and school assignments. STORAGE A large floor armoire was built at the far die of the room between the bed and wall.. The armoire was built with 8 separate storage units that are approximately 12”x24” by 8” deep. These enclosed storage spaces are convenient for anything a growing boy may need to put away and convenient enough to make cleaning up easy for him. The floor is built to support the chair and desk built into the far corner of the room. GROWTH The room was designed for active ages 8 to 18. There are three ways to enter the bed, climb the knotted rope, custom rock wall, or pipe monkey bars up the wall and along the ceiling. The ladder was included only for parents. While these are the intended ways to enter the bed, they are also a convenient safety system to prevent younger siblings from getting into his private things. SAFETY This room was designed for an older child but safety is still a critical element and every detail in the room was reviewed for safety. The raised bed includes extra long and higher side boards ensuring that any rolling in bed is kept safe. The decking was sanded and edges cleaned to prevent any potential splintering. Power outlets are covered using exterior industrial outlets for the switches and plugs, which also looks really cool.

Two weeks later these delicious greens have filled out and are ready to be harvested. I recommend removing just a few of the outer leaves as needed which keeps the plant producing for a long time.
