So when a Bay Area couple purchased a rare set of adjoining lots overlooking Windy Hill in Portola Valley, they made frequent visits to the site where they absorbed the views while listening to the land as they contemplated building a home there. The intent: to create a home that would celebrate the scenic beauty of the San Mateo County region. Long before the design process began, the couple committed themselves to preserving as many trees on the land as possible. These trees, two majestic, centuries-old Blue Oaks in particular, ultimately became the impetus for the home’s orientation and the inspiration for its design. Detailed discussions and brainstorming sessions led the owners to discover their own unique tastes: “cozy” and “rustic“ while “contemporary, but not minimal.” The result? Sophisticated style comprised of simple, honest materials.

The pool house features an outdoor kitchen and bar area, which rests on posts that adjoin the raised pool wall. The pool house was built as an exact architectural match to the house, from the stucco, to the cedar decking beams, down to the paint color. This covered outdoor entertaining area provides a shady spot in the afternoons, where guests can lounge on four in-pool, swim up bar stools. The rest of the pool remains in full sun. The sunken swim-up bar is adorned with glass tile accents, and the pool wall features natural stone. Oversized, UniLock bluestone pavers comprise the pool deck and patio. The unique negative-edge spa sits above the pool, and was designed so one half of the spa flows into the pool while the other half flows back into the landscaping. custom-built three-story waterfront residence with unobstructed views of Biscayne Bay, Sailboat Bay and Miami’s Downtown skyline. The timeless, tropical modernism of the home features an ash-infused concrete exoskeleton, a gravity-defying staircase, cantilevered balconies, an expansive, translucent reclaimed wood trellis, infinity edge reflecting ponds, waterfront spa bathrooms and more--- all offering a seamless indoor and outdoor living experience. Sitting on an acre of land, the home is comprised of seven bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, a powder room, four kitchens, a 73-foot pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, entertainment theatre room, climate controlled wine room, eight-car gallery and a protected boat dock.

This bold and beautiful kitchen features Rochon custom flat panel cabinets, stainless steel Frigidaire appliances, a center island and a stainless steel hood. Storage was maximized in the island to allow for a full wall to be comprised of windows.

A small courtyard garden in San Francisco. • Creative use of space in the dense, urban fabric of hilly SF. • For the last several years the clients had carved out a make shift courtyard garden at the top of their driveway. It was one of the few flat spaces in their yard where they could sit in the sun and enjoy a cup of coffee. We turned the top of a steep driveway into a courtyard garden. • The actual courtyard design was planned for the maximum dimensions possible to host a dining table and a seating area. The space is conveniently located outside their kitchen and home offices. However we needed to save driveway space for parking the cars and getting in and out. • The design, fabrication and installation team was comprised of people we knew. I was an acquaintance to the clients having met them through good friends. The landscape contractor, Boaz Mor, http://www.boazmor.com/, is their neighbor and someone I worked with before. The metal fabricator is Murray Sandford of Moz Designs, https://mozdesigns.com/, https://www.instagram.com/moz_designs/ . Both contractors have long histories of working in the Bay Area on a variety of complex designs. • The size of this garden belies the complexity of the design. We did not want to remove any of the concrete driveway which was 12” or more in thickness, except for the area where the large planter was going. The driveway sloped in two directions. In order to get a “level”, properly, draining patio, we had to start it at around 21” tall at the outside and end it flush by the garage doors. • The fence is the artful element in the garden. It is made of power-coated aluminum. The panels match the house color; and posts match the house trim. The effect is quiet, blending into the overall property. The panels are dramatic. Each fence panel is a different size with a unique pattern. • The exterior panels that you see from the street are an abstract riff on the seasons of the Persian walnut tree in their front yard. The cut-outs illustrate spring bloom when the walnut leafs out to autumn when the nuts drop to the ground and the squirrels eats them, leaving a mess of shells everywhere. Even the pesky squirrel appears on one of the panels. • The interior panels, lining the entry into the courtyard, are an abstraction of the entire walnut tree. • Although the panel design is made of perforations, the openings are designed to retain privacy when you are inside the courtyard. • There is a large planter on one side of the courtyard, big enough for a tree to soften a harsh expanse of a neighboring wall. Light through the branches cast playful shadows on the wall behind. • The lighting, mounted on the house is a nod to the client’s love of New Orleans gas lights. • The paving is black stone from India, dark enough to absorb the warmth of the sun on a cool, summer San Francisco day.

This wonderfully adventurous client had no fear of color! She wanted a luxe Moroccan vibe for the remodeled suite. An adjoining area - a rabbit warren of rooms comprising an awkward bath and tiny closets- was transformed into a luxurious bath that opens onto the spectacular view. (Following photos) A small bedroom behind the bed wall was made into a closet/dressing room. I added custom silk draperies with metal ball fringe, custom duvet and pillows, and covered the cool barrel chairs (the client's thrift find) with a sparkly chenille with aqua velvet trim. The fireplace was faced with labradorite (also used in adjoining bath), and the area above was boxed out so that a tv could be placed behind closed doors. A rich chocolate color was used on the walls, and for the shag carpet. You may surprised to learn that 12 different fabrics and trims were used to pull this harmonious look together.

Battle Architects was hired to be the architect for a large vacation compound on Tips Cove, Lake Winnipesaukee. In our early discussions with the clients, their mantra to us was that they wanted to “love every inch.” From this beginning, Battle Architects worked closely with the clients and team carefully developing and coordinating every detail inside and out. The compound consists of a caretaker’s house and separate garage, utility garage, boathouse, and the main home. The main home was oriented and designed to enjoy the beauty of Lake Winnipesaukee. The exterior details were developed with a rustic tone which the clients loved, and the interior spaces were designed to accommodate large family gatherings and create great memories. The second floor has “pods” of bedrooms and bathrooms for each sibling’s family privacy with a couple of common areas for smaller gatherings. There is a private master suite, located on the first floor, with its own screened porch offering a gorgeous view of the lake. There is an easy flow through the kitchen, great room, and large screened porch accommodating large gatherings. The basement is a series of entertainment spaces – an exercise room, movie theater, bowling alley, game area, and bar area for the rainy days and warm nights where the family can gather and enjoy their time together. Big picture interior details were designed with a rustic feel inspired by projects such as Lake Placid Lodge. There were opportunities to create unique spaces such as the bowling alley which incorporates details inspired by Fenway Park. The exterior material palette is comprised of river rock, skirl siding, red cedar shingles, Douglas fir timber frame, and natural and painted trim. The interior material palette offers warmth and comfort with butternut, oak, hickory, and birch bark on the first floor; cherry, Douglas fir, and mahogany on the second floor; and oak, mahogany, alder, Douglas fir, and English walnut for the basement. Exterior details were developed with energy conservation in mind and acoustic details were developed throughout the home for privacy. Millwork and cabinetry were developed with a mill shop and artisan cabinetry and mantels were added as highlights in the home.

Sited on a ravine feeding the Credit River, the project comprises a new house and gardens. Of particular note are the angular geometries of the building forms, extensive use of architectural concrete, glass and millwork surfaces, and site topographies and geotechnical conditions.

Bedrooms comprise the 1st floor in this smart, reverse living home. The master suite has a dressing room, private bath and terrace. Separate laundry room, 2nd bath and 2 storage areas complete the first floor. This unique property can easily be converted into a 4-5 bedroom home.

Due heritage considerations, restoration was complex and costly. Due poor site drainage and old construction technique, wall damage due salt damp was prevalent. Existing levels needed regrade with landscaping provided by Lesli Hewett, a relative of the early settlers who resided in the cottage. While the roof structure was intact, it required new galvanised sheeting and the eastern wall needed rebuilding as your finger would go through the wall! Original limestone blocks were rotated to hide age. Stone footings replacement with concete. New work maintained the curvature and ground movement of 180 years of movement. Rotted original floors were replaced by century-old jarrah repurposed from Adelaide's old Clark Shoes factory. The Daringa House offers a farm house feel comprising two bedrooms both with separate ensuites, living, dining and a kitchen area overlooking gardens. The Colton Cottage, with original slate floors, is entirely separate, offering a studio and full size bathroom.

This year round two-family cottage is comprised of seven modules which required just 25 days to construct in an off-site facility. When assembled, these prefabricated units form a building that is 38 metres long but less than 5 metres wide. The length offers a variety of living spaces while the constricted width maintains a level of intimacy and affords views of the lake from every room. Sited along a north-south axis, the cottage sits obliquely on a ridge. Each of the three levels has a point of access at grade. The shared living spaces are entered from the top of the ridge with the sleeping spaces a level below. Facing the lake, the east elevation consists entirely of sliding glass doors and provides every room with access to the forest or balconies. Materials fall into two categories: reflective surfaces – glazing and mirror, and those with a muted colouration – unfinished cedar, zinc cladding, and galvanized steel.
