Beverly Hills based clients commissioned a vacation home for their family in Malibu, CA. Together with world renowned interior designer John Cottrell, we conceived a 10,000 sq. ft. Pennsylvania Stone Farm House. The stone was quarried from the Midwest and is complemented by a steep French slate roof. The site is situated on a 2 1/2 acre bluff with a panoramic view stretching from Paradise Cove to Catalina Island. This resplendent retreat immediately relaxes the mind and body as one is lead from the circular drive court through an arched portico with paneled wood gates into a quiet lawned courtyard. The garden and reflective lap pool and spa are sheltered from harsh elements by the two wings of the house. A glass French lite Dutch entrance door is discretely located at the end of an outdoor colonnade.
Architect: Ward Jewell Architect, AIA
Interior Designer: John Cottrell
Landscape Designer: Doug Levy
Construction: David Moline Builders

Tucked along the southern edge of the courtyard, this detached structure was conceived of as a multi-purpose space for work, exercise, and lounging. A wall of built-in casework was designed to incorporate a full wet bar, and allow a custom-made oiled walnut and leather desk to slide perfectly into place at one end.

The West Hollywood @editionhotels and Residences was conceived by @ianschrager and designed by @johnpawson by looking to the surrounding neighborhood and the larger city for inspiration: open spaces, sweeping views framed in modern, textural materials like concrete and teak. The influence of Pawson extends beyond the architecture and into the finishing details, he designed everything from the building's custom siding to the bronze FSB hardware on the doors. The result is the brand new FSB Lever 1242 (and 1243 with return).

Reimagining an Urban Classic
Perched high above San Francisco’s Cow Hollow neighborhood, this meticulously reimagined residence represents a thoughtful transformation of a classic urban home into a contemporary, light-filled sanctuary. The project involved a comprehensive renovation paired with both vertical and horizontal expansion, dramatically increasing the home’s footprint while enhancing its relationship to sweeping views of the Bay, the Palace of Fine Arts, and the surrounding hillside neighborhoods.
The design strategy focused on opening the home to light, air, and vistas—elements often constrained in the dense urban fabric of San Francisco. By extending the structure upward and outward, the architects created a dynamic four-level residence that unfolds gradually, culminating in expansive living spaces and rooftop terraces oriented toward panoramic city and water views.
Architecture that Frames the View
At the heart of the design is a careful orchestration of sightlines and natural light. Large black-framed windows punctuate the façade and interior spaces, deliberately positioned to capture iconic San Francisco vistas while flooding the home with daylight. The architecture prioritizes openness, allowing rooms to flow seamlessly while maintaining a strong visual connection to the surrounding landscape.
A dramatic skylight above the central stairwell anchors the vertical circulation of the home. This architectural gesture not only brings daylight deep into the interior but also reinforces the sense of spatial continuity between floors.
Warm Modern Interiors
Inside, the home balances architectural clarity with warm materiality. Wide-plank oak floors run throughout the residence, creating visual cohesion and grounding the interiors with natural warmth. Custom walnut millwork—integrated shelving, cabinetry, and wall panels—introduces depth and texture while complementing the clean lines of the architecture.
The interiors are intentionally restrained yet richly layered. Contemporary furnishings, sculptural lighting, and curated artwork add personality while maintaining the calm, sophisticated palette that defines the home.
The Social Heart of the Home
The main living level serves as the social centerpiece of the residence. An open-plan kitchen, dining area, and lounge space unfold toward the view, creating an environment that feels both expansive and intimate.
A sculptural marble island anchors the kitchen, functioning as both workspace and gathering hub. Surrounded by walnut cabinetry and professional-grade appliances, the kitchen merges elegance with functionality. Above, a cascading chandelier introduces a sense of vertical movement, reflecting the home’s emphasis on light and architectural rhythm.
Living areas are arranged to encourage conversation and connection. Generous seating, layered rugs, and thoughtful lighting define distinct zones within the open plan while maintaining uninterrupted sightlines toward the cityscape beyond.
Private Retreats Above the City
Upper levels of the home are dedicated to quieter, more intimate spaces. The primary suite is conceived as a private retreat, where expansive windows frame treetop views and invite natural light throughout the day.
The accompanying bathroom continues the home’s refined material palette. Marble surfaces, warm wood cabinetry, and brushed brass fixtures create a spa-like environment that balances luxury with tranquility.
Additional bedrooms and flexible living spaces offer comfort for family and guests, each designed with the same attention to light, proportion, and material richness.
Spaces for Entertaining
Lower levels provide additional areas for gathering and entertaining. A lounge and bar area offer a relaxed setting for hosting, while custom wine storage adds a sophisticated touch for collectors and enthusiasts.
These spaces transition easily to outdoor areas, reinforcing the home’s emphasis on indoor-outdoor living.
A Rooftop Above the Neighborhood
The transformation extends beyond the interior to include thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces. A landscaped rear yard introduces greenery and privacy at ground level, offering a serene urban escape.
Above it all, the rooftop terrace becomes the crown jewel of the residence. Elevated above the neighborhood, it provides sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay and the Palace of Fine Arts. Comfortable seating areas, lush planters, and open sky create an ideal setting for outdoor entertaining, sunset gatherings, or quiet moments overlooking the city.
A Contemporary Urban Sanctuary
The completed residence demonstrates the power of thoughtful renovation and expansion within a historic urban neighborhood. By combining contemporary architecture, warm materiality, and an intentional relationship to the surrounding landscape, the project transforms a traditional San Francisco home into a modern sanctuary above the city.

The new construction luxury home was designed by our Carmel design-build studio with the concept of 'hygge' in mind – crafting a soothing environment that exudes warmth, contentment, and coziness without being overly ornate or cluttered. Inspired by Scandinavian style, the design incorporates clean lines and minimal decoration, set against soaring ceilings and walls of windows. These features are all enhanced by warm finishes, tactile textures, statement light fixtures, and carefully selected art pieces.
In the living room, a bold statement wall was incorporated, making use of the 4-sided, 2-story fireplace chase, which was enveloped in large format marble tile. Each bedroom was crafted to reflect a unique character, featuring elegant wallpapers, decor, and luxurious furnishings. The primary bathroom was characterized by dark enveloping walls and floors, accentuated by teak, and included a walk-through dual shower, overhead rain showers, and a natural stone soaking tub.
An open-concept kitchen was fitted, boasting state-of-the-art features and statement-making lighting. Adding an extra touch of sophistication, a beautiful basement space was conceived, housing an exquisite home bar and a comfortable lounge area.

The Yountville Residence was designed to accommodate three family generations coming together over food, wine, outdoor living and the land. Located amongst continuous vineyards on the broad flood plain of the Napa River, creating a strong sense of place was foremost. Rich in a culture of wine making and production from the land, the site demanded a design solution that honored its history and elevated the experience of the land.
The house pays homage to its context by creating a reimagined agrarian compound. Conceived as a family of smaller buildings, the architecture comes together around a shaded patio and pool. The kitchen, dining, and living spaces all flow onto the shaded outdoor patio and gardens. Low-sloped gable roofs evoke the agricultural history of the region and echo the gentle slope of the foothills beyond.
The home remains understated – quietly drawing one’s attention back to the magnificent natural features of the landscape. Gently pulled back into the heart of the serene vineyards, it is carefully oriented with Stag’s Leap at the foot of the Vaca Mountains to the East and the Mayacamas Range to the West. Scenic views continue uninterrupted through the home. Large window walls slide open and pocket on either side of the house, connecting the family to the outdoors and building a personal experience of place on the Valley floor.
“If we can enrich people’s lives, and just maybe inspire them to do something beyond what they might otherwise have done, that brings us great satisfaction.” – Stan Field, fA Principal
The connection of the architecture to the land goes beyond its visual connectivity. The design sensitively responds to land and place by recognizing key passive cooling and natural daylighting strategies present on the site. Broad overhanging roofs and the large slide away doors capture prevailing breezes up the valley. The patio, which is pulled close into a recessed cut-out in the main living space of the house, allows summer breezes across the pool to cool the house. Expansive windows and a narrow cross-section allow natural daylight to penetrate deep into the spaces and illuminate the rich and earthy palette of natural materials.
The architecture created is a vehicle through which the powerful forms of the landscape craft a powerful experience of place. It is a respite from urban life, designed to bring one back to the basics: a love of family, land, food, and of course, wine.

Sited on a Wyoming mountainside, just below the tree line, this home traverses a steep, east facing slope located just south of Grand Teton National Park. The house is conceived as a series of terraces offering views of the mountainous, vast landscape to the east and minimizing the visual impact of the building from the valley below. Designed for a family of six who share a love for the landscape and all mountain sports, the stepping volumes create separate zones for the family while remaining part of a single cohesive composition that responds to the land. The program includes a cantilevered living area with views to the west, north, and east; a shared fireplace between the dining area and the living area; and a kitchen which opens to the dining room and to an outside shaded terrace. The formal entry is up-slope—convenient to the guest parking area and skiers returning along a favorite, out-of- bounds ski run. The master bedroom occupies the highest point of the design and is above an office and studio, which can are converted into bedrooms. A roof top hot-tub is embedded into the roof of the lowest volume, and a fire table enlivens the mid-level terrace.

Nestled in the heart of a luxurious new home, this kitchen blends the timeless elegance of traditional design with the clean lines and functionality of modern aesthetics. The "Modern Traditional Kitchen" project was conceived to provide an inviting space that is both beautiful and highly functional, catering to the needs of a family that loves to cook, entertain, and spend quality time together.
Design Concept:
Our vision was to create a kitchen that feels both classic and contemporary. By harmonizing traditional elements like detailed cabinetry and a classic color palette with modern fixtures and state-of-the-art appliances, we've crafted a space that pays homage to the past while embracing the convenience and sleekness of the modern era.
Features:
Cabinetry: Custom-built cabinetry in a soft, timeless white, adorned with elegant hardware, offers a nod to traditional design while providing ample storage for a clutter-free space.
Countertops: The countertops, crafted from premium quartz, present a luxurious and durable surface that complements the kitchen's aesthetic. The expansive central island serves as both a preparation area and a casual dining spot.
Appliances: Equipped with high-end, stainless steel appliances that blend seamlessly into the design, offering cutting-edge technology without sacrificing style.
Lighting: A combination of recessed lighting and classic pendant lights over the island ensures the kitchen is well-lit, highlighting the space's features while offering a warm ambiance.
Backsplash: A subtle, yet sophisticated, backsplash adds depth and interest, tying the modern and traditional elements together.
Flooring: Wide-plank hardwood flooring adds warmth to the kitchen, providing a seamless flow from other areas of the home into this central gathering space.
Design Challenges:
One of the primary challenges was balancing the traditional and modern elements to create a cohesive design. This was achieved through careful selection of materials and finishes that speak to both aesthetics, ensuring that every detail contributes to the overall vision of a modern traditional kitchen.
Outcome:
The result is a breathtaking kitchen that stands as the heart of the home, offering a perfect blend of sophistication, warmth, and functionality. It's a space where family and friends can gather, share meals, and create memories, all while surrounded by a design that reflects a modern take on traditional elegance.
Client Testimonial:
"Our new kitchen has become the centerpiece of our home, thanks to the incredible design and craftsmanship. The team managed to capture exactly what we envisioned: a space that's both stunning and incredibly functional. We couldn't be happier with the outcome."
This Modern Traditional Kitchen is more than just a cooking space; it's a testament to the harmony that can be achieved when classic design meets modern innovation, making it a perfect fit for any luxury home.

This renovation was conceived for a client with a deep appreciation for art—and an undeniable love of blue. His collection of paintings and sculptures set the tone for the entire home, inspiring a design that feels both curated and deeply personal. The kitchen became the artistic centerpiece: sleek, sculptural lines accented by warm gold detailing that plays beautifully against rich blue tones. Real quartzite countertops cascade in liquid-like waterfalls, their movement echoing the fluidity of the art that surrounds them. The result is a space that blurs the line between gallery and home—polished, expressive, and effortlessly livable.

When looking for a modern or contemporary furniture at the entrance or a daybed this is a perfect modern match.
Conceived as a small sofa with a built-in coffee table, it becomes a bigger sofa for 3 to 4 people (or even an auxiliary bed for one person) when you put the two back cushions on the coffee table next to the seat cushion.
