The architectural materials employed in the design of the facade described above weave the exterior seamlessly with the interior living spaces; as a result the indoor and outdoor areas can be experienced simultaneously, allowing all family members to share a common space together even while engaged in different activities.

Kitchen - contemporary kitchen idea in Miami

Every inch of the inside and outside living areas are re-conceived in this full house and guest-house renovation in Berkeley. In the main house the entire floor plan is flipped to re-orient public and private areas, with the formerly small, chopped up spaces opened and integrated with their surroundings. The studio, previously a deteriorating garage, is transformed into a clean and cozy space with an outdoor area of its own. A palette of screen walls, Corten steel, stucco and concrete connect the materiality and forms of the two spaces. Blackbird is a warm-modern residence set within the protected landscape of the Ardrossan Estate, conceived as an architecture that feels grown rather than imposed. Through evolved agrarian forms, tactile materials, and light-filled spaces, the home quietly aligns contemporary living with history, land, and daily life.

The kitchen is conceived as a room within a room, with walls that stop short of the ceiling to allow one to perceive the larger scale of the former dining room. Arranged in a "U" shape at the window end of the room, the kitchen has a convenient pass-through counter facing the dining area. Open glass shelves create additional storage space while concealing the view of an unlit courtyard. The window sill line is a "datum" band of black tile in the black and white checkerboard backsplash, tying the kitchen visually together.

This chimneypiece exemplifies Soane's unique ability to reinterpret classical form and produce a design of stunning modernity. The inverted bow to the pilasters and stylised Greek Key motif could only have been conceived by Soane. The chimneypiece was originally commissioned for a property in Grosvenor Square, London in 1803. It is shown here in white marble with the 22" Byron forged steel fire basket and black slate hearth and slips.

A large brick chimney splits the south face of the house, and combines interior and exterior amenity. Conceived of as the spine of the house, this large formal gesture also separates the public and private spaces of the main floor, and the children's' rooms from the parents room on the upper storey.

This cedar-wrapped poolhouse sits within the zoning footprint of an existing, dilapidated garden shed. It was conceived as an indoor/outdoor room, with three large barn doors sliding open to seamlessly connect the interior to an adjacent cedar deck and elevated 25-meter swimming pool. The space contains open showers, a toilet room and kitchenette and functions equally well as a spa in winter, with a Japanese soaking tub and sauna.

This homeowner’s love of Swedish modern design is evident in the geometry that forms the basis of the composition. Conceived by architect Gert Wingardh of Sweden and executed by VOA Associates, the opaque minimalist façade that is presented to the street contrasts with glassy interior courtyard walls that frame views to a landscaped pond. Crisp detailing enhances the effect. The limited palette of materials and energy-efficient building systems respond to the owners’ desire to live a modern, sustainable lifestyle.
