This homeowner’s love of Swedish modern design is evident in the geometry that forms the basis of the composition. Conceived by architect Gert Wingardh of Sweden and executed by VOA Associates, the opaque minimalist façade that is presented to the street contrasts with glassy interior courtyard walls that frame views to a landscaped pond. Crisp detailing enhances the effect. The limited palette of materials and energy-efficient building systems respond to the owners’ desire to live a modern, sustainable lifestyle.

The stairs and bookshelves were conceived by the architects and detailed and fabricated by the owner and contractor using steel and stained glulam beams. The obscure glass window in the bookshelf admits light into the master bathroom. The stained concrete floor has hydronic heat, but the Tulikivi fireplace to the left provides most of the winter heating. Grab a book on your way upstairs to bed!

This classic low country style home is located inside Bluffton’s Palmetto Bluff. The home was conceived as a retreat for its residents, and a connection to the outdoors from all major rooms was an important consideration. Despite 8000 square feet of conditioned space, the home retains an understated elegance due to carefully considered massing and design.

The project consisted of the design, detailing and construction of a new residence for a private client in the historic district of Ridgefield, Connecticut, on a street of early 20th century 'Summer Homes'. The residence was conceived of as a Shingle Style Revival structure with a prominent entry porch in keeping with both our and the client’s desire for a home that would feel immediately at one with it’s neighbors both in scale and character. Conceived as an exterior extension of the interior living and entertaining spaces, the pool garden is fun and dynamic - especially in the evening. White pool tile and blocky granite give subtle reference to the building’s history as an ice collection and storage facility.

The new door system is 5 panels; an entry swing-door at the left, and the other 4 panels bi-folding to the right. The new roofed, columned porch and stoop were conceived in a random ashlar pattern in bluestone. The re-designed winding stair and kitchen can be seen here.

The upper concrete terrace look out over the mirror surface of an infinity edge lap pool hovering two inches above deck level. A square fountain conceived as an 18”-high monolithic volume of water is visible from the entry and doubles as a spa.

Conceived of by an interior designer, but the exact structure worked out by me. Solid walnut glued-up panel sides, mitered at all corners to avoid seeing board edges. I actually can't remember if I stained this or if that's just the natural walnut color. Clear-coated with water-based polyurethane. Height was perhaps a bit taller than ideal, and that was because there are stairs in front of this bathroom that give you a low line of sight, and we wanted to block the view of the drain and water lines.

In the opposite direction, and this time only open to the perimeter, the two main nighttime rooms of the house are located. At the four corners, between the open spaces, four enclosed cores are placed, concentrating the service areas. The roof becomes the final space that completes the overall composition. It is accessed via an internal staircase and is conceived as a kind of oasis defined by a series of boundaries. On its outer edge, the vegetation of the garden provides privacy. On its inner edge, a sheet of water crowns the circular courtyard, featuring a deeper area on one side to allow for bathing.
