Pairing their love of Mid-Century Modern design and collecting with the enjoyment they get out of entertaining at home, this client’s kitchen remodel in Linda Vista hit all the right notes. Set atop a hillside with sweeping views of the city below, the first priority in this remodel was to open up the kitchen space to take full advantage of the view and create a seamless transition between the kitchen, dining room, and outdoor living space. A primary wall was removed and a custom peninsula/bar area was created to house the client’s extensive collection of glassware and bar essentials on a sleek shelving unit suspended from the ceiling and wrapped around the base of the peninsula. Light wood cabinetry with a retro feel was selected and provided the perfect complement to the unique backsplash which extended the entire length of the kitchen, arranged to create a distinct ombre effect that concentrated behind the Wolf range. Subtle brass fixtures and pulls completed the look while panels on the built in refrigerator created a consistent flow to the cabinetry. Additionally, a frosted glass sliding door off of the kitchen disguises a dedicated laundry room full of custom finishes. Raised built-in cabinetry houses the washer and dryer to put everything at eye level, while custom sliding shelves that can be hidden when not in use lessen the need for bending and lifting heavy loads of laundry. Other features include built-in laundry sorter and extensive storage.

The view from this wooded, west facing site is dramatic, from the eastern tip of Long Island on the south to the Rhode Island coast on the north. Oddly, the existing house did not take full advantage of the view; only a single set of sliding glass doors faced the ocean. It was determined that the most sustainable strategy was to renovate the existing house, despite its shortcomings, and add a wing that would maximize the views and provide access to an existing grassy clearing in the woods to the south. The expansive view is slowly revealed as one moves along the relocated driveway to the entry porch, into the house and then onto the west and south-facing decks. To encourage leisurely socializing, the plan concentrates the public spaces where the view, both from inside and on the decks, is most compelling.

We infused this small home office with a gray color palette to boost the clients concentration. Pops of deep magenta and green were added to infuse lighteness to her rather monotonous work.

This stunning luxury gym interior with bespoke mirrored cabinetry and premium slatted wood wall panelling was designed and installed by us for our client’s prime residence in Guildford, Surrey. The vertical panels are constructed in a highly durable natural light oak with a contemporary Nordic look. The neutral colours and natural oak in this room promote a serene atmosphere to allow for focus, concentration and relaxation. Slatted wall panels for acoustics and aesthetics The narrow slats absorb sound and reduce echo and reverberation for a comfortable and pleasant environment. An acoustic black backing adds extra soundproofing. The sweeping curved shape of the bespoke slatted wood-clad doors are a special feature and soften the appearance of the cabinetry adding elegance to the environment. The discreet handles recessed into the edge of the doors maintain the sleek minimalist look. A practical satin matt clear finish enhances the grain and adds protection. Handcrafted bespoke storage The bespoke floor to ceiling fitted cabinetry features full-length safety mirrored doors with a silver finish. The mirrors provide visual feedback and enhance light and a feeling of spaciousness. Every millimetre of cabinet space has been tailored with cabinetry with storage features. These include deep pull-out drawers for heavy equipment; a custom space for golf clubs and bags; square cubby holes for trainer shoes, and rounded shelves in the curved section to organise small items. The interior of the cabinetry is lined with a hardwearing, easy to clean light grey textured laminate. The interior drawers and door backs are spray finished in Farrow and Ball Down Pipe, a stylish dark grey.

This hillside home in Piedmont, CA was remodeled to change the style from a 1940's rancher with eight foot ceilings and dark interiors, into a modern geometric composition with vast white interiors for casual living and generous daylighting for displaying the artist-owner's works. In a city known for rigorous and difficult design review, an addition, two variances, and a full stylistic change were unanimously approved on the first round. All sloped roofs and attics were eliminated and replaced by a series of stacked and overlapping flat roofs. This made the house taller on the inside and shorter on the outside, which helped earn design review cooperation in the community. Windows were concentrated toward the rear yard views or moved up high on the side walls for daylight and privacy, benefitting the owners as well as the neighbors. At the start, the owner husband was so enthusiastic and engaged in transforming his house into something modern that he presented the architect with a scaled foamcore model, rather than the usual magazine clippings and wish list. He participated in the design decisions throughout the process. The owner wife is the artist who did all the artwork in the house. She had been craving a display space with large walls and good natural light. Both of them loved the location and great views. The project was an opportunity to transform the style of an older traditional home into a modern one, while solving numerous problems. By rebuilding the 1800 ft2 top of the 3-story home it was possible to change the style of the whole building, since the lower floors were a neutral base, and also to change the lifestyle of the owners, who wanted to move their master suite upstairs and live primarily on the top floor as empty nesters. Going into the project, the architect knew there were multiple encroachments into the setbacks and potential privacy issues with close by neighbors. He approached this as a complex puzzle made up of architectural and political pieces which all had to fit together elegantly. It took many careful moves, small and large, to arrive at a serene and cohesive result that tied old and new together seamlessly. The design-build contractor worked closely with the owners and handled all of the construction phase documents and design adjustments, adding ideas of their own to make the project really sing. The project was a collaboration in three acts. The owner had a strong design concept from the start. The architect developed it into a realistic project and garnered the design approvals. Then the contractor executed brilliantly.

Therefore, when it came to the selection of materials, pureness presents in-finity, simplicity creates richness. Bright green brings cheerfulness, and the exposed ceiling and cloud-like chandeliers create a natural and agile visual perception. The combination of dynamic and stillness embodies the concentra-tion of the designer. As the previous office was in Chinese style with redwood furniture, in order to have good effect of the overall space, the designer discussed with the own-er repeatedly, strive to change into a modern style, which matches more with their products, clients, competitors, brand culture and temperament of the of-fice, younger staff, etc., in the end, this design shows up. This is a ring-shaped office space with same walls and same core tubes, which make people easily disoriented. By the principle of 5 elements - metal, wood, water, fire and earth, the designer placed the reception and exhibition room in the middle, and painted in yellow, corresponding to central earth. According to this principle, the R & D department on the east side is decorat-ed in green, corresponding to wood, also, the market and finance department on the south side is orange, corresponding to fire. Service department on the west is white color representing metal, CEO and QC office on the north side is given black color, representing water. 5 directions are painted in 5 colors, which make people clearly distinguish departments and directions. The building wall of the void area has a huge sloped beam, which causes poor visual experience. To solve this problem, the designer creates a magnificent X-shaped style by making use of the original beam structure. Its perforated sides and the luminous aluminum plates are very sci-fi, showing a similar vision of X-Men headquarters. The interaction, communication and intersection among people are the key points of designing moving lines. Their optimization brings closer collaboration among departments,shorten the distance that people have to walk in the space, such as in conference rooms, negotiation rooms, recreation area, water bar, reception area. Reasonable moving lines make discussion and communication between people, de-partments, and customers more efficient. At the same time, different spaces create different atmospheres and emotions, relax, or serious, or leisurable, etc., so as to meet needs of different moments. The clients had just moved into an impressive Victorian house and the existing kitchen was in a very poor state. After seeing one of our adverts they made an appointment to visit the studio for an initial consultation, and after spending some time with Stephen they invited him to visit the house to begin the design process. He quickly came up with some concept ideas that initially included removing two internal walls which would really open up the existing space, yet considering the timescale the clients decided to concentrate on creating just a beautiful kitchen. With concept designs done and budgets considered they decided to instruct us for the complete project. We began with the building works that would allow a new kitchen to be fitted, this comprised of removal of the existing kitchen, installation of a new sub-floor and electric underfloor heating. The floors were finished with natural Limestone which just left installation of new power and lighting and a complete re-plaster. Including fitting the new bespoke kitchen, the project was completed over an eight week time period and on budget.
