This beautiful spa is part of a backyard project completed by Gary Duff Designs. The team first stepped onto this unkempt yard equip with a few relaxation requisites but lacking the thoughtful finishing touches needed to refine the space. In one month, Gary Duff Designs tapped into its unused potential by opening up the yard, adding an entrance and creating extra areas to sit and relax, including a shelf in the home’s new spa and a new counter at the bar. When confronted with years-old pavers, the team found a perfect replacement that protected cohesion and elevated design. By combining earth tones, wood grain, bronze ornamental aluminum railing and colorful flowers throughout, the backyard was transformed into a homey escape that embraces residents and guests alike.

As projects and properties sizes grow to estate proportions, new issues confront the architect. Providing spaces, forms, and interfaces that are appropriate to the user and the neighborhood becomes a delicate exercise.

Upon entering the newly defined entry, one is confronted with a restrained palette of a refined and juxtaposing material palette. Floors are Mapei. The kitchen counter is Calacatta Oro. Hot rolled steel clads the fireplace and the media cabinet. Poliform furniture completes the living room furnishings. “When the Cameron’s hired us to work with them, we were confronted with a typical Chicago problem…flooding on the property because of the grade differences between the two neighbor’s lots on both sides. The fixes were effective and beautiful; a raised bed on the north side to match the neighbor’s grade and a grassy area that was pitched toward a Rain Garden on the south side which effectively managed the water from the other neighbor’s garage and incorporated a percentage of native plants addressing Sustainable Sites Initiative™ requirements (the LEED like standards being set forth for the Landscape industry). This is a New England beach house that is regularly confronted by severe nor'easters. The task was to provide a face-lift that could withstand the windblown salt and sand. The existing exterior cladding consisted of 3 layers of wood clapboard and vertical shiplap siding. The seal around the windows was significantly compromised causing a cold, drafty house to require extensive heating and expense. We removed the 2 outer layers of existing siding to access the window flashing, which we sealed with membrane flashing. We then applied fiber cement panels and covering the vertical seams with Atlantic cedar battens.

Bugling Elk made from sandstone with travertine antlers is challenging the bull elk to the left, invading his territory. Wee granite pines are tucked amongst the slate, stone, and emerald boulders. I added the emerald boulder and some peridot greenery for harmony, happiness and abundance, then some crushed fluorite (stabilizing & Protection), and pink tourmaline flowers (happiness and joy) on ledges. I tucked in a little green calcite here and there --a powerful amplifier and energy cleanser. At the bottom (to the left of the faucet) a small grey travertine bunny is leaping from the boulders, running from the coming confrontation. To the far left, a small bunny alerts at the irritated elk.

Confronted with the problem of replacing a deteriorated exterior staircase and porch, the Owners of this Pittsburgh Ranch Home asked Dunn and Associates what they recommend. Instead of replacing the Porch in kind, we recommended creating a new Atrium Entry that relocates the entry door at ground level rather than a story above. This not only made for easier and safe access to the home, but created a naturally-lighted volume that exploits a magnificent view of the river valley. The Atrium breathed new life into an otherwise tight and disjointed living area. Once the Owner stains the existing house brick and replaces the gable siding (Phase II), the house will have a totally new and cohesive appearance. The deep overhang provides summer shading and the iron-spot brick lends a rich modern appearance to the stereotypical ranch design
