Imagine a 180° view outside your dining room that would make a spaceship jealous… If we could compare our company to an aerospace company, this project would be the equivalent of launching a rocket, if we were a shipbuilding company it would be the equivalent of our newest creation leaving the dock for the first time. What makes this project so special? It is the first curved floor-to-ceiling projected panoramic window that is dual-pane! The visual effect inside the dining room is stunning. This room was not even used before due to the uncomfortable heat coming in through the single-pane glass accompanied by terrible noise. Previously this opening was just a low-tech assembly from six individual single-pane pieces of glass connected with aquarium like caulking. Today, the homeowner has the experience of having a glorious view of the colorful landscape that feels like it surrounds you with only a tiny whisper when a car passes. Presently there is no discomfort from the heat and all the interior furnishing and flooring are saved from the damaging UV rays. No doubt that having a window like this in your home makes a huge statement of pride in ownership and appreciation of beauty and quality.

To-date this was the most complex dry stone project that the Heritage Earth & Stone team has designed and built. Jon designed it using what he describes as "circular" and "geometric" aspects. His intention was to build a stunning feature revolving around fire that connected everyone in one beautiful space close to the wild part of the property. Seventeen people were involved in this collaboration including two other members of the Throughstone Group. Jay from Stellar Jay Designs built and installed several Doug Fir features including the benches, threshold and turned wooden tubes. Mary and Craig from Northwest Outdoor Lighting designed and installed a lighting system that created a magical nighttime setting. The total man-hours exceeded 2,200 and approximately 1,200 stones were individually cut, shaped and tooled from raw rock. From the approximate 56 tons of raw rock about 30 tons were transformed into stone that was used for the feature. The project took place over a 5-1/2 month period and right through the middle of a Colorado winter.

Inspiration for a transitional living room remodel in Chicago

The story of this home is very unassuming, but that was the objective, to create the most intuitive, discreet, thoughtful smart home possible for our client. The clients are very tech-savvy individuals, but not over the top. They knew what they wanted, and what they wanted was clean and reliable technology in their home. Simple as that. A complete smart home system built just for them, providing a seamless experience. Automated lighting and shades timed and tuned to their preferences, security and surveillance giving them 24/7 peace of mind, climate control always at the ideal temperature, and an audio/video system that is not only brilliant in sound, but modern, easy to control, and beautiful. Two words come to mind for these clients after the project was complete… “Welcome Home.”

The family liked having a general dining area as well as a formal dining room but wanted to change up the overall layout while opening up the kitchen. Design Objectives • Open up the space to the formal dining room and move the general dining area to be next to the living room • Give the space an expansive feel • Create multiple work areas • Create easy flow/walkways/continuity to allow a family of four to move about freely and complete different tasks in the space • Make the space adaptable for entertaining • Bring in more natural light Design Challenges • Work around obstacles like the fireplace in the dining room and structural fixtures between the dining room and the kitchen • Design a plan for a very big area that is proportional with no wasted space Design Solutions • A structural engineer was brought in to give options for relocating duct work and building a new header. • Combining the old kitchen and dining room resulted in a great new space that was very long. This allowed us to create new workspaces across two islands. • A contrasting color theme (bright perimeter cabinets and dark islands) helped ground the space, making it flow while still feeling intimate and inviting. The homeowners love their new space and report that the aesthetic and functional changes allow them to do more, both individually and together. As a hub for everything their busy lives entail – from day-to-day routines to a wide range of entertaining arrangements – their wide-open kitchen handles it all while keeping the space and the family connected.

This is an addition that was a complete rehab of an oceanfront property in Gloucester. These bathroom remodels had a great base and core elements that we wanted to honor. Central to the project were the cherished handmade cabinetry and vintage wood mirrors, which served as anchors for the bathroom's serene and cozy core. By removing and painting over the eccentric wallpaper stripes and embracing a more tranquil green hue, accented by warm wood tones, the bathroom seamlessly welcomed elements of the outdoors within. This subtle yet impactful change brought a sense of harmony and connection to nature, elevating the space to a tranquil retreat. Throughout the renovation, the integrity of the structure and its unique natural elements remained paramount. The slanted ceiling, with its distinctive charm, and the windows flooding the room with natural light, were preserved to maintain the character and authenticity of the space. VanBrouck & Associates: Inspired by the classical architecture of Palladio, this Italian villa was designed with a procession of beautifully proportioned, ordered spaces, with strong axial sightlines, to draw the eye through the spaces and beckon the individual to explore. Beautifully sited on acreage, the interior and exterior spaces are thoughtfully orchestrated to interact together, and to connect to the land. Stone loggias, at the entry, rear, and side of the residence, visually and literally extend the interior living spaces. View-lines extend through the house from the open courtyard and infinite landscape vistas of the front to the wooded terrain of the rear. Gentle cross-breezes flow and natural light streams into the rooms from a series of French doors lyrically arranged throughout the spaces.

This Wallingford project has multiple “fronts”, to Wallingford Avenue N, internally between the structures and to each side defining the woonerf for shared access. The true front of the project is the one internal to the site, defining a centrally located outdoor space that is terraced and sheltered with direct views to and from each of the eleven homes. Accessed between the structures, the courtyard space connects to the lower outdoor multi-use spaces of the woonerfs. In addition each home has private decks accessible from upper floor living spaces and on the roof. All exterior spaces are shaped through the expression of each home’s individuality within the larger project. Formal and material variation combined with strategic window placement create opportunities for contrast, view and privacy.

We used industrial elements brick, glass, steel, wood, brass, and painted concrete, opting for simplicity and utility over adornment. In Raleigh, North Carolina, we installed a 36-foot white oak slide in a custom home. The client loved it so much they ordered a second one—literally 15 minutes after we finished the installation. When Clyde returned to the office, there was already a check in the mailbox for slide number two. This 14,000-square-foot home now features 72 linear feet of curved white oak slide: one connecting the second floor to the main level, another linking the main floor to the finished basement. In collaboration with Green Hammer, this forested lot in the West Hills achieved the goals of increased daylight, improved energy efficiency, and optimized functionality through a series of mindful space planning, finish, and fixture decisions. By re-orienting the split level stair circulation, individual yet interconnected spaces were clearly defined, while celebrating the home’s connection to its natural setting.
