A courtyard with sculptural Ginkgo trees offers refuge from lake breezes. On the pool terrace, custom Cor-Ten planters overflow with Russian Sage, selected for graceful foliage that sways in the breeze and offers a relaxing herbal aroma.

Perched on a ridge 20 feet above a private lake in Stillwater, Minnesota, the clients wanted an age-in-place home where strong design influenced by the natural surroundings informed the space and shape of the project. CITYDESKSTUDIO carefully sited the home in one of the many natural clearings within their wooded property alongside a private lake, maximizing connection to the land, while preserving trees and natural topography. The home is distinguished by a light-filled, vaulted living area, a continuous timber loggia forming the entry court and connection to the garage, and a landscape design filled with rain gardens and indigenous rocks and plantings. The home features one-level living with a walk-out lower level which maintains a low profile upon approach, allowing the home to fit gracefully within its context. Sustainable features include landscaping with rain gardens to control rainwater, thermal mass concrete, geothermal in-floor heating, and a 10 kilowatt photovoltaic array with home batteries to allow fully off-grid living. Locally sourced building materials were used where possible for cedar siding and patio paving, including re-used soapstone counters. The house is divided into three wings; the owners wing, the guest wing, and the social/entertainment wing. The greenhouse concept permeates through every hallway, connecting each wing of the house with greenery and natural light. The skylights provide ample light, while the plants and greenery create a healthy and refreshing indoor environment. The use of natural local stone, cast-in-place concrete, and reclaimed wood creates an organic and warm aesthetic that is both beautiful and sustainable. These materials along with the sloped roof lines blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, creating a connection between the house and its natural surroundings.

This luxury property called for staging that complemented the home’s clean contemporary architecture without competing with the surrounding views. We kept the palette warm and neutral, then brought in sculptural furniture, organic textures, soft curves, and black accents to connect with the architectural finishes throughout the home. In the main living spaces, the furniture placement was intentionally kept open to emphasize the scale of the rooms, the indoor-outdoor connection, and the mountain views. Layered seating created defined areas while still allowing the spaces to flow naturally from the living room into the kitchen and dining areas. Throughout the home, we used a mix of warm woods, textured neutrals, olive tones, and contemporary artwork to soften the modern architecture and give each room a finished, livable feel. Even the secondary spaces, including the office, lounge areas, and game room, were staged to show buyers how every part of the home could be used.

This 1967 home has been transformed. LANTERN HOUSE is located at the edge of the forest, the edge of urbanity, where the glass and metal clad entry and stair volumes glow like lanterns in the night. The sloping, trapezoidal site posed challenges, resulting in a very unique geometry with a courtyard, a bridge, and a new stair tower link old to new. A new porch and foyer create a gradual entry sequence into the existing main house. A new roof form provides vaulted ceilings in an open plan concept. The primary living spaces are connected to private outdoor spaces for entertaining and everyday living, and the main addition contains a private master retreat with secluded access from the stair tower. The connection with nature is ever present throughout the house with intentionally placed glazing framing views to the surrounding trees.
