JR DBAHistoric Victorian Reconstruction and Companion Residence
This project involved the reconstruction and restoration of a historic Victorian residence in Santa Barbara, California, along with the design and construction of a new companion residence carefully crafted to reflect the architectural character and detailing of the original home.
The project focused on preserving and celebrating the qualities that make Victorian architecture enduringly appealing: rich exterior detailing, proportioned massing, decorative trim elements, covered porches, and a strong relationship between the home and surrounding landscape. While modern building systems and construction methods were incorporated throughout the project, the design intent remained rooted in the craftsmanship and architectural traditions that defined the original residence.
Special attention was given to maintaining visual continuity between the historic structure and the new residence. Exterior materials, roof forms, window proportions, trim profiles, and architectural details were carefully coordinated to create a cohesive property that feels authentic to its historic context while meeting the needs of contemporary living.
The result is a property that honors the architectural heritage of Santa Barbara while demonstrating how thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship can successfully bridge historic character and modern construction.
Trush Construction CompanyThe design intent for this graceful contemporary home was an approach toward minimalism, yet ensuring that the practical needs of day-to-day life could still be satisfied. Situated on a plateau atop a steep hill, the floor plan and glass walls beautifully incorporated the outdoor environment into the primary living spaces. The grounds were carpeted with sage and lavender.
The contemporary color palette was in pale tones of white, graphite and titanium, complimented with white washed vertical grain oak. The vanity cabinets were of rift cut oak with a conversion varnish finish. Kitchen cabinets were conceived with open shelving in graphite with quartz counters.

Astro Design Inc.The design intent of this kitchen space was to pay homage to Brutalist architecture, while still including
contemporary design elements, in this compact modern infill project. The use of clean lines and stark geometric shapes was fundamental, in order to evoke the modularity and functionality that Brutalism is known for. Preserving the feeling of a livable, inviting space was also very important, as the kitchen is open to the rest of the main floor living area.
A combination of materials, in both warm and cool tones, helped to integrate the rougher construction materials traditionally found in Brutalist architecture. The colour and texture of the built-up concrete counter on the island contrasts beautifully with that of the cantilevered walnut butcher block.
The subtlety of the glass base in the seating area allows the lines of the countertops to really be the focus of the room.

TR Construction GroupMinimal but architectural. This bathroom feels clean, sculptural, and quietly luxurious — very serene. It's a narrow space, but the design makes it feel intentional and elevated. The walls are adorned with white 3D tile featuring a repeating petal pattern. The tile is hard and solid, but the carved-in geometry creates soft shadows, giving it that tactile, hand-carved feel. A tall window above the toilet floods the room with natural light, which really brings out the depth of the tile pattern and keeps everything feeling airy and calm. The floor tile is neutral and mute, grounding the room so the walls don't feel busy. Right outside this room, a full seated shower with a duo sink.
Schwartz and ArchitectureThe proposal analyzes the site as a series of existing flows or “routes” across the landscape. The negotiation of both constructed and natural systems establishes the logic of the site plan and the orientation and organization of the new home. Conceptually, the project becomes a highly choreographed knot at the center of these routes, drawing strands in, engaging them with others, and propelling them back out again. The project’s intent is to capture and harness the physical and ephemeral sense of these latent natural movements as a way to promote in the architecture the wanderlust the surrounding landscape inspires. At heart, the client’s initial family agenda--a home as antidote to the city and basecamp for exploration--establishes the ethos and design objectives of the work.

AHD was hired at the early stages of construction to create a cohesive environment from the architectural finishes, lighting design to the furnishings and decor.
This project is a testament to the couple's diverse cultural influences, blending their English heritage with the rich tapestry of their travels through India. Our focus has been on crafting a contemporary interior that prioritizes both comfort and durability, ensuring that every aspect of the space is not only inviting but also functional for their growing family. We selected bespoke furnishings, where craftsmanship takes center stage. Each piece was carefully curated to embody an organic biophilic aesthetic, creating a refreshing haven using earthy colors and genuine materials.
Our ultimate design intent was to create a space that is healthy, practical as well as aesthetically pleasing, tailored to the lifestyle and preferences of our clients.
Astro Design Inc.The design intent of this kitchen space was to pay homage to Brutalist architecture, while still including
contemporary design elements, in this compact modern infill project. The use of clean lines and stark geometric shapes was fundamental, in order to evoke the modularity and functionality that Brutalism is known for. Preserving the feeling of a livable, inviting space was also very important, as the kitchen is open to the rest of the main floor living area.
A combination of materials, in both warm and cool tones, helped to integrate the rougher construction materials traditionally found in Brutalist architecture. The colour and texture of the built-up concrete counter on the island contrasts beautifully with that of the cantilevered walnut butcher block.
The subtlety of the glass base in the seating area allows the lines of the countertops to really be the focus of the room.
Trush Construction CompanyThe design intent for this graceful contemporary home was an approach toward minimalism, yet ensuring that the practical needs of day-to-day life could still be satisfied. Situated on a plateau atop a steep hill, the floor plan and glass walls beautifully incorporated the outdoor environment into the primary living spaces. The grounds were carpeted with sage and lavender.
The contemporary color palette was in pale tones of white, graphite and titanium, complimented with white washed vertical grain oak. The vanity cabinets were of rift cut oak with a conversion varnish finish. Kitchen cabinets were conceived with open shelving in graphite with quartz counters.

AIBD - American Institute of Building DesignThis house was resting vacant for 7 years in a neighborhood undergoing a renewal. It was purchased by a builder intent on showing his craft by renovating this Shingle Style Dutch Colonial. The project involved a dramatically sloping site and constraints involving a traditional neighborhood with residents on the Historical Design Review Board. During Construction, a couple purchased the home adding requirements for multigenerational living. It was necessary to underpin and lower the basement to accommodate for elderly parents and a live-in care provider. All of these constraints have been architecturally sculpted into a contextually sensitive and elegant design.

Humà Design + ArchitectureThe Chambord Residence was a typical worker’s duplex house in the heart of the patrimonial neighbourhood of the Plateau Mont-Royal. The initial intent of this residential renovation project was to annex a master bedroom that would have a view over the iconic Mount Royal, and at the same time, a rooftop terrace. The new addition’s architecture had to contrast with the existing building which stayed untouched. It consisted of a simple volume laid gently over the duplex. We recessed the facade of the new construction to keep the initial alignment of the street.
The client’s love for natural materials and bright colors made it easy for us to choose copper as the siding finish for the extension. The idea of seeing his house change color and evolve through time and natural oxidation made it clear for him that it was the most interesting material. We chose a diamond shaped tile to cover the new add-on construction, as it refers to the vernacular false-mansard found in the city, and adds a texture that will make the copper age unevenly.
Our goal was to create a contemporary jewel that celebrates the patrimonial gem it sits on.

Schwartz and ArchitectureThe proposal analyzes the site as a series of existing flows or “routes” across the landscape. The negotiation of both constructed and natural systems establishes the logic of the site plan and the orientation and organization of the new home. Conceptually, the project becomes a highly choreographed knot at the center of these routes, drawing strands in, engaging them with others, and propelling them back out again. The project’s intent is to capture and harness the physical and ephemeral sense of these latent natural movements as a way to promote in the architecture the wanderlust the surrounding landscape inspires. At heart, the client’s initial family agenda--a home as antidote to the city and basecamp for exploration--establishes the ethos and design objectives of the work.
