Moss Garden: A Living Carpet of Tranquility
A moss garden is a serene, low-maintenance landscape feature that evokes a profound sense of calm and natural beauty. Composed of vibrant, velvety mosses that thrive in shaded, humid environments, these gardens offer a soft, carpet-like groundcover that replaces traditional lawns or gravel with rich, green texture.
At Westland Design, our moss gardens are thoughtfully integrated into the overall landscape to enhance a feeling of timelessness and stillness. Whether nestled beneath the canopy of trees, edging a stone pathway, or surrounding a tranquil water feature, moss brings subtle movement and color to quiet corners of the garden.
Key qualities of a moss garden include:
Evergreen softness: Moss provides lush, year-round greenery that requires no mowing or fertilizing.
Quiet beauty: It absorbs sound, contributing to a peaceful, contemplative environment.
Natural elegance: Ideal for Japanese-style gardens or woodland settings, moss complements stone, water, and wood elements with organic harmony.
A moss garden is more than a design choice—it’s an invitation to slow down, observe closely, and appreciate nature’s quiet elegance.

Tucked away in a small subdivision, these homeowners have taken their builder-grade backyard and transformed it into a Japanese-inspired oasis. After the initial landscape design and construction by Pacific Garden Design, the homeowners have continued to craft an elegantly evolving landscape. A multi-level deck provides entertaining space as it steps down to the yard. A dry water feature anchors the corner of the yard, while a series of stone benches provide spots for quiet contemplation. The thriving garden area takes advantage of the southern exposure along one side of the yard and offers an opportunity for garden whimsy. Gravel pathways connect the space to the front yard and the natural area behind the property.

Contemplating the remarkable voyage of crafting these church kneelers for Christ Church in Cambridge—a blend of pure joy and sheer privilege.
While restoring these kneelers, we stumbled upon nails dating back to the 1800s! We even found the very kneelers that George Washington once knelt upon. Pretty cool, right?
Lousso is truly honored to have collaborated with Christ Church on this project, and we want to express our deep gratitude.

Project Overview:
Our team embarked on a thoughtful renovation journey, transforming an aging deck into a harmonious blend of indoor-outdoor living. The goal was to create a space that honors tradition while embracing modern comfort.
Existing Deck Transformation:
Original Deck:
The existing deck, weathered by years of memories, retained its original purpose—a place where sunlight dances and conversations flow.
Uncovered and open to the elements, it stood as a testament to countless gatherings and sun-kissed afternoons.
Screen Porch Conversion:
Half of the deck underwent a magical metamorphosis, emerging as a screen porch—a sanctuary where the outdoors and indoors intertwine.
The screen porch now cradles moments of quiet contemplation, protected from bugs and gentle rain.
Design Considerations:
Seamless Transition:
The transition between the deck and the screen porch is seamless, honoring the house’s original footprint.
The shared boundary invites a gentle flow—a dance of light and shadow.
Cantilevered Roof:
To preserve the deck’s sunlit expanse, we cantilevered the roof over the screen porch.
This architectural choice ensures that both spaces coexist harmoniously, each with its unique purpose.
Functional Harmony:
The deck, now partially covered, continues to serve as an alfresco haven for sunbathing, stargazing, and laughter.
The screen porch beckons with its screened walls, inviting cozy evenings and whispered secrets.
Legacy and Connection:
This renovation isn’t just about wood and nails; it’s about honoring the past and embracing the future. The parents, their children, and grandchildren—all find solace here, under the same sky, within these transformed walls.

Inspired by the labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France we were asked to create a special space of contemplative unwind. With a new hot tub partially dug into the hillside overlooking the custom cut flagstone labyrinth patio, the restorative tone of this back yard brings you back to a place of center.

The temple's design is a striking interplay of modernity and spirituality, where geometric precision meets serene naturalism. Spherical domes are juxtaposed with intricate lattice walls, creating a play of light and shadow that changes with the sun's movement. The use of natural materials and the organic forms of the structures create a peaceful retreat that speaks to both innovation in design and reverence for natural beauty.

With its classic American architecture, this Neo-Colonial residence makes a strong statement in its rural Northwest setting. Formal gardens and European-inspired details give way to natural forms and native plantings as you move away from the house, integrating the home into its environment.

Set in the rolling hills of Calistoga, this Winery Estate is a quiet escape that balances hospitality with intimacy. Interiors layer warmth and texture—from pendant-lit kitchen spaces to a lounge where mirrors and soft fixtures amplify vineyard views. The dining room offers subtle drama with a sculptural chandelier and layered tablescape, while upstairs bedrooms provide serene, understated accommodations. Outdoors, a shaded pergola and inviting pavilion extend living into the landscape, blending reflection with connection. Even the wine cave entrance is quietly expressive, a nook where contemplation meets conviviality. Layered, calm, and purposefully personal, the estate feels modern yet timeless, welcoming without revealing too much.
