OUR INSPIRATION - When we enter a space, we want our designs to feel as organic as possible, imbued with the latest in trends and technology. Our first instincts were to derive our inspiration from the simplicity of the homes design, the beauty of the surrounding landscape and its historic characteristics. As we continued to explore the nature of this project further, we were faced with a couple of existing design elements in the home that were to remain; the marble and travertine checkerboard floor, as well as the entrance hall wallpaper. With the floor, since it is a classic design, we knew we had to maintain a base of traditional styling. The wallpaper expanded our inspiration, specifically from its seemingly Persian iconography with its curvilinear natural elements (seen in the tile) juxtaposed with sharp clean lines (seen on the countertop edges).

Ever wonder what would happen if you decided to go wild and make the basement of your dreams?
That is exactly what these homeowners’ tasked us with. As their children continue to grow, the goal for this basement was to create the “it” place to be for years to come. To achieve this, we explored it all – a theatre, wet bar, wine cellar, fitness, billiards, bathroom, lounge – and then some.

Juxtaposing a Southern Colorado setting with a Moorish feel, North Star Ranch explores a distinctive Mediterranean architectural style in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The owner raises cutting horses, but has spent much of her free time traveling the world. She has brought art and artifacts from those journeys into her home, and they work in combination to establish an uncommon mood. The stone floor, stucco and plaster walls, troweled stucco exterior, and heavy beam and trussed ceilings welcome guests as they enter the home. Open spaces for socializing, both outdoor and in, are what those guests experience but to ensure the owner's privacy, certain spaces such as the master suite and office can be essentially 'locked off' from the rest of the home. Even in the context of the region's extraordinary rock formations, North Star Ranch conveys a strong sense of personality.

The OPEN series is inspired by the Moonflower or Ipmoea aiba which produces pure white, trumpet-like flower that opens as evening falls. The flowers continue to blossom throughout the night but close as the sun rises in the morning.
Our OPEN series explores the suggestion of movement in static forms. Like a series of still images from a time-lapse nature film the OPEN marks the passing of time in a series of still forms. OPEN can be purchased in triples to be displayed near each other or as single pendants.
The matching ADA sconce can be installed in groups as well to create larger, intriguing visual arrangements. The sconce can be installed with the opening up, down or sideways.

The major objective of this home was to craft something entirely unique; based on our client’s international travels, and tailored to their ideal lifestyle. Every detail, selection and method was individual to this project. The design included personal touches like a dog shower for their Great Dane, a bar downstairs to entertain, and a TV tucked away in the den instead of on display in the living room.
Great design doesn’t just happen. It’s a product of work, thought and exploration. For our clients, they looked to hotels they love in New York and Croatia, Danish design, and buildings that are architecturally artistic and ideal for displaying art. Our part was to take these ideas and actually build them. Every door knob, hinge, material, color, etc. was meticulously researched and crafted. Most of the selections are custom built either by us, or by hired craftsman.

The black-and-white floral tile pattern continues across the shower floor and curb, surrounding a square drain. White subway wall tiles provide a simple backdrop, while the glass enclosure leaves the decorative floor visible from the rest of the condo ensuite.
Cedarstone Renovations transformed this 100-square-foot downtown Toronto condo-loft ensuite after a longstanding shower leak. The bathroom renovation restored use of the shower and brought together a freestanding tub, custom vanity and coordinated black, white and grey finishes.

House of Light and Form explores the home as a sculptural composition. Vertical stone monoliths anchor floating horizontal roof planes, while expansive glass reveals the living spaces between them. Deep overhangs create sheltered outdoor areas, allowing the architecture to extend into the landscape. Light and shadow continually reveal new dimensions of the forms.
Conceived and designed by JMAD Architecture, developed in collaboration with Jyland Construction Management. Shown in architectural renderings, this unbuilt residential design is complete and available for a homeowner interested in bringing it to life.

Alair Homes Georgian Bay completely updated this mid-century beach with new wood floors, and a modern open floor plan that continues throughout the living room to the kitchen/dining area. The Mazama house is located in the Methow Valley of Washington State, a secluded mountain valley on the eastern edge of the North Cascades, about 200 miles northeast of Seattle.
The house has been carefully placed in a copse of trees at the easterly end of a large meadow. Two major building volumes indicate the house organization. A grounded 2-story bedroom wing anchors a raised living pavilion that is lifted off the ground by a series of exposed steel columns. Seen from the access road, the large meadow in front of the house continues right under the main living space, making the living pavilion into a kind of bridge structure spanning over the meadow grass, with the house touching the ground lightly on six steel columns. The raised floor level provides enhanced views as well as keeping the main living level well above the 3-4 feet of winter snow accumulation that is typical for the upper Methow Valley.
To further emphasize the idea of lightness, the exposed wood structure of the living pavilion roof changes pitch along its length, so the roof warps upward at each end. The interior exposed wood beams appear like an unfolding fan as the roof pitch changes. The main interior bearing columns are steel with a tapered “V”-shape, recalling the lightness of a dancer.
The house reflects the continuing FINNE investigation into the idea of crafted modernism, with cast bronze inserts at the front door, variegated laser-cut steel railing panels, a curvilinear cast-glass kitchen counter, waterjet-cut aluminum light fixtures, and many custom furniture pieces. The house interior has been designed to be completely integral with the exterior. The living pavilion contains more than twelve pieces of custom furniture and lighting, creating a totality of the designed environment that recalls the idea of Gesamtkunstverk, as seen in the work of Josef Hoffman and the Viennese Secessionist movement in the early 20th century.
The house has been designed from the start as a sustainable structure, with 40% higher insulation values than required by code, radiant concrete slab heating, efficient natural ventilation, large amounts of natural lighting, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, and locally sourced materials. Windows have high-performance LowE insulated glazing and are equipped with concealed shades. A radiant hydronic heat system with exposed concrete floors allows lower operating temperatures and higher occupant comfort levels. The concrete slabs conserve heat and provide great warmth and comfort for the feet.
Deep roof overhangs, built-in shades and high operating clerestory windows are used to reduce heat gain in summer months. During the winter, the lower sun angle is able to penetrate into living spaces and passively warm the exposed concrete floor. Low VOC paints and stains have been used throughout the house. The high level of craft evident in the house reflects another key principle of sustainable design: build it well and make it last for many years!
