Eichler X-100 Kitchen: A Futuristic Vision of Function and Design
The kitchen of the Eichler X-100 is not just a place to cook—it is a designed system, a forward-thinking experiment in how everyday living could be streamlined, modernized, and elevated through architecture. Envisioned by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons for Joseph Eichler, the space reflects a bold reimagining of the American kitchen in the mid-20th century.
A Central Hub of the Home
Positioned within the home’s central utility core, the kitchen is strategically located to connect all major living zones. Rather than being tucked away, it becomes a functional anchor, allowing for seamless interaction between cooking, dining, and gathering spaces.
This layout reinforces Eichler’s philosophy:
the kitchen is not separate—it’s part of everyday life.
Innovation Built In
What sets the X-100 kitchen apart is its integration of experimental, built-in features that were far ahead of their time.
Highlights include:
A sliding dining table with integrated electric burners, blending cooking and dining into one continuous experience
Built-in appliances and systems, designed to reduce clutter and maximize efficiency
Thoughtful ergonomic planning that simplifies daily routines
These elements reflect a larger idea:
that the home should work for you—not the other way around.
Material as Modern Expression
The kitchen showcases extensive use of laminate surfaces (Formica)—a material that, in the 1950s, symbolized innovation, durability, and modern living. Clean, smooth, and easy to maintain, these surfaces reinforce the home’s futuristic identity.
Paired with steel structure and clean lines, the material palette creates a space that feels both industrial and approachable.
Open, Light-Filled Design
True to the X-100’s overall concept, the kitchen is fully integrated into the open-plan layout. Sightlines extend outward to living areas, glass walls, and even interior gardens, ensuring the space never feels enclosed.
Natural light filters in from multiple directions, enhanced by skylights and reflective surfaces, giving the kitchen a bright, uplifting atmosphere throughout the day.
A Prototype for Modern Living
In many ways, the X-100 kitchen anticipated how we live today:
Open-concept layouts
Multi-functional islands and dining spaces
Integrated appliances
Clean, minimal design
What feels standard now was radical in 1956.
Where Design Meets Daily Life
The kitchen of the Eichler X-100 is a perfect example of how architecture can elevate the everyday. It transforms routine into experience—where cooking, gathering, and living all happen within a single, beautifully orchestrated space.
It’s not just a kitchen.
It’s a glimpse into the future—designed decades ahead of its time.

What is Rammed Earth?
Rammed earth is an ancient construction technique that seamlessly blends the raw beauty of
the Earth with architectural ingenuity. It involves compressing layers of natural raw materials, such
as earth, chalk, lime, or gravel, to create sturdy, durable walls or structures. The result is a stunning
display of the Earth's colors and textures, providing not only a harmonious connection to the
natural world but also exceptional thermal mass properties for energy efficiency.
• This time-honored building method, dating back thousands of years, continues to capture the
imagination of modern architects, environmentalists, and those with a deep appreciation for
sustainable living. Rammed earth structures are renowned for their organic appeal, as the layers of
earth form unique patterns, creating a visual masterpiece in every piece of architecture.
• At “Rammed Earth Graden”, we've harnessed the artistry of rammed earth to craft exquisite
lanterns that not only illuminate your space but also infuse it with the timeless essence of this
extraordinary building technique. Explore our exclusive collection to experience the magic of

Green Home Systems recently completed a 10.89 kW solar panel installation project on Tullamore Ln in Ames, IA for their client Bradly R. Our team of experienced professionals went above and beyond to ensure that this project was completed on time and to our client's satisfaction. We are proud to share the success story of this project with all of our current and future clients!
At Green Home Systems, we understand that making the transition to solar energy can be an intimidating process, which is why we strive to provide all of our clients with the best possible service. We offer competitive financing options for those looking to go solar, as well as our BBB accreditation which speaks volumes about our commitment to providing quality service. Additionally, we take the time to inspect all areas before beginning a project, ensuring that each job is done safely and securely.
For this particular project, we worked with Bradly R., who wanted to make the switch from traditional electricity sources to a more eco-friendly option while also reducing his utility bill in the process. We chose sloped roof racking systems due to the unique terrain of the area and worked diligently over a couple months to complete the installation. By utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained technicians dedicated to completing each job efficiently, we were able to finish this project on time without compromising quality or safety standards.
The results of our work speak for themselves! Not only did Bradly R.’s electricity bill decrease significantly after installing solar panels with us, he also saw an increase in his property value due to the upgrades made with energy efficient materials. Additionally, he was able to do his part for the environment by reducing his carbon footprint significantly by switching from traditional energy sources to solar energy.
We are so thankful that Bradly R. chose Green Home Systems for this project and would like thank him for recommending us! He found us through an online search and was impressed with our craftsmanship and ability to complete projects on time. We are proud that our hard work has paid off and look forward continuing to provide top notch quality service in Sherman Oaks and beyond!

We also offer monitoring services that allow you to track your system’s performance in real time so you can make sure your investment is working as expected.
At Green Home Systems, we understand how important it is for our customers to feel confident in their investment and that’s why we offer competitive financing options through our partners at Sunrun and Sunpower. This enquiry from Neath came from an elderly gentleman who was moving into a care home in the near future and wanted his Victorian tiled hallway renovated before the property went on the market. He mentioned he didn’t think it was that dirty however it could do with a clean and reseal.
We arranged to call in one morning and take a look at the tiles and whilst there we completed a test clean so we could provide an accurate price for renovating the floor. For the clean I applied Tile Doctor Pro-Clean, the purpose of this was to see whether and how fast the dirt would shift and also to get an idea of the condition of the floor beneath the layer of dirt.
The test clean went well and the owner was happy to accept our price and suggested that as we had already made a start we might as well continue. Fortunately, there were two of us that day and I only had a couple of other quotes in the area, so I was able to crack on. I should mention this work was done at the beginning of 2020 before the COVID-19 lockdown.
All sorts of detritus gets walked into hallways so we began by using a hand held scraper to take off any anything that sat upon/above the floors surface. This also makes the cleaning process that little bit easier for us. The earlier test clean had enabled us to establish which cleaning methods and products would work best on the floor so it was just a question of putting the plan into action.
The process involved applying a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean to the floor, leaving it to soak in for ten minutes and then working it with a coarse 400-grit diamond pad fitted to a rotary buffer. More water was applied for lubrication where required and the soil produced afterwards was rinsed off and extracted with a wet vacuum. The pad is encrusted with industrial diamonds and cuts into the tile and removes a very thin layer leaving the tile very clean.
After extracting the soil, the floor was inspected, and we noticed that there were a few tiles throughout the floor that needed more work. To deal with these we used hand-held diamond blocks of varying grits to remove the ingrained dirt and bring the tiles back to life.
The client was over the moon with the results of the cleaning and we scheduled a date of the following week to come back and seal the tiles. We also discussed sealers and he had asked if we could leave the floor with a shiny finish. With that in mind we recommended Tile Doctors Seal and Go which works really well on Victorian tiles. It is also water based and so doesn’t produce a smell as it dries.
On our return the floor was given a quick wipe down and once dry sealed with four coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go which will add protection and make them easy to keep clean.
Once complete the floor looked great and very welcoming, just what you need when selling a property as initial impressions always count.

From the moment you approach the residence, the interplay of stone accents, vertical elements, and expansive windows establishes a striking yet inviting presence. Inside, a two-story entryway welcomes guests with light and volume, introducing an interior designed for both comfort and sophistication. The open-concept first floor seamlessly integrates the kitchen, great room, and dining/breakfast area, all flowing naturally toward a covered patio that extends the living space outdoors. A walk-in pantry, a private den, and a mudroom with built-in bench and hooks—conveniently located off the two-car attached garage, one bay featuring an oversized door—enhance the home’s functional rhythm. An expansive basement provides room for future recreation or storage, ensuring the home continues to evolve with the family who lives in it.
The second floor hosts four well-proportioned bedrooms, including a master suite designed as a private retreat. The suite features a generous walk-in closet and a luxurious soaking tub, paired with thoughtfully arranged natural light to create a sense of calm and rejuvenation. Two full bathrooms and one half bathroom support the needs of modern family living while maintaining architectural cohesion throughout the home.
Designing this residence presented several challenges that ultimately pushed the architectural expression forward. One key challenge was blending multiple rooflines into a unified modern aesthetic without losing the clarity of the home’s form. RWH resolved this by composing a series of carefully layered planes, each one calibrated to complement the others, resulting in a dynamic yet harmonious silhouette. Another challenge involved balancing the mix of exterior materials—such as stone, horizontal siding, and broad window openings—while maintaining a sense of order and visual stability. This was achieved by aligning materials with structural elements and strengthening vertical features, creating rhythm and cohesion across the façade. A further challenge was delivering an open, light-filled interior despite the structural demands of a two-story entry and several cantilevered forms. RWH overcame this through advanced framing techniques and discreet structural steel placement, allowing for expansive glazing and generous interior spans while preserving the home’s clean, uncluttered aesthetic.
The Whistle Hill Lot 9 Residence stands as a testament to forward-thinking residential design and the evolution of architectural expectations in the area. Through innovative solutions, intentional detailing, and a commitment to elevating everyday living, RWH Architect has created a home that not only meets the needs of modern families but also sets a new benchmark for contemporary architecture in the region.

Recently, Mandy Renfrew collaborated with Gemstone Developments to stage their beautiful newly built modern custom home. Gemstone built this home with an incredible attention to detail. From floor plan to finishes, they demanded perfection each step along the way. Polanco Home Decor’s staging experts continued this high level of thought and consideration into the furniture and decor selection to prepare this house for sale.

“While the building is a masterpiece on its own, it also boasts breath-taking views of the scenic Rideau Canal and manicured green space. By spring, enjoy the sights of the Canadian Tulip Festival and in winter participate in the capital’s renowned Winterlude celebrations by taking steps to the world’s largest skating rink, the Rideau canal.” Josh Zaret, Gemstone Developments http://gemstonecorp.com/portfolio/894-colonel-by-drive/
Furniture Store Ottawa - Ottawa StagingThis modern open concept home, designed by Barry Hobin, included 10 foot ceilings with gorgeous floor to ceiling windows. It was important to create an inviting atmosphere with the furnishings we chose, creating a space that anyone who enters could envision themselves living in. We wanted to create a distinction between the living and dining room, as the home featured a very open concept space. Polanco’s designers wanted to create the look of a home meant for entertaining, in which you could enjoy a dining experience as well as socialize in the living room area. The breathtaking view of the Rideau Canal seen from all seating areas in the living space accentuated the spacious feeling of the home.
A custom sized Martha sectional from Marcantonio Designs was the perfect choice for this grand open living room. Upholstered in a soft off-white leather, this style with metal legs complements the contemporary style of this home. We paired the sectional with a square fully tufted ottoman in a similar creamy-white leather to complete the seating area. The solid maple Verona sideboard from Handstone Furniture in a vintage silver stain gives buyers a sense of where to position their media centre. Above this piece, in lieu of a TV, we opted to bring some colour into the space with a piece from Celadon Art. To tie the artwork to the rest of the area, beautiful toss cushions in varying tones of blue were placed on the furniture pieces. Two matching Cassandra chairs upholstered in a simple grey linen fabric were selected to complement the neutral tones of the other furniture pieces. White accessories from Torre & Tagus placed on the ottoman are the final element of decor to this gorgeous open concept living space.
We wanted to continue with a light and airy look, and chose to place a custom Albany console from Artage on the wall opposite to the Verona sideboard. We decorated the console with white accessories from Torre & Tagus and a Bangkok mirror from Renwil. This mirror is a Polanco favourite due to its size and versatility – it matches both classic and modern designs. The round shape of the mirror adds softness and complements the wall sconces.
Furniture Store Ottawa - Ottawa Home StagingMoving into the dining room, we selected the Cordova dining table from Handstone Furniture. The functionality of a pedestal table allowed for more seating so buyers could envision how many guests they could seat in this large open space dining room. We chose the same vintage silver stain on the dining room table as well as on the living room sideboard to create consistency from room to room. To contrast with the darker stain of the table, we paired it with white leather Linda chairs from Elite Living. At the head of the table, the Albany bar cart from Artage in a bright chrome finish completes the room with a unique entertaining piece.
Furniture Store Ottawa - Ottawa Home StagingMatching Linda white leather counter stools were used in the kitchen to create continuity from one room to another. In the family area off of the kitchen, we placed the Melynda swivel chair from Marcantonio Designs in a complementary white leather. The swivel feature on the chair allows buyers to envision how the space would function – if you were sitting in this area you could easily swivel your chair to talk to people in the kitchen as well as enjoying the contemporary fireplace. Opposite this chair is the Melrose love seat upholstered in a light grey linen fabric. It was chosen for its low profile look, as it does not obstruct the view of the beautiful terrace at the back of the house. In the centre of both pieces is the Orion coffee table also in a bright chrome finish. The Orion coffee table, light in design, was a strategic choice, making the room appear larger. Patterned toss cushions complement the geometric texture of the tiled fireplace while bringing the design elements of the space and furniture together.
Furniture Store Ottawa - Ottawa Home StagingIn the master bedroom, we selected the stunning Layla king size bed upholstered in a light grey linen fabric. The soft curve of its headboard complements the curved Capricorn chairs placed in the seating area near the window of this room. Crisp, white linens from Cuddle Down Products were chosen to dress the bed, accentuated by Polanco’s own decorative toss cushions in fabrics from Robert Allen Design. On each side of the bed we chose custom wide Brooklyn nightstands painted in Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and accentuated with decorative glass knobs. Silver accents are continued throughout the room, as shown with the nailheads on the upholstered bed and occasional chairs, cabinet knobs, lamps, and accessories.
The spare bedroom was designed specifically to allow future home buyers to envision their own furniture in the space. We chose the Linea queen bed in a neutral grey fabric for its simple and elegant design and paired it with crisp white linens from Cuddle Down Products. A silver end table from Torre & Tagus and a silver table lamp from Arteriors Home finish the space.
The entranceway was decorated with a large simple 48” round mirror with a decorative upholstered Thomas bench in a contemporary grey velvet fabric. We accented the design of the entrance bench with toss cushions to create an inviting feel upon entering this exquisite home.
Furniture Store Ottawa - Ottawa Home StagingOpen to the entranceway, the large den has magnificent floor to ceiling windows showcasing the view of the gardens along the Rideau Canal. We chose to show this space as a home office, featuring a live edge solid cherry desk from Harden Furniture. We positioned a Wilson chair in blue fabric at the desk, facing towards the breathtaking views of the canal. To complete this office look, a Timeout chair and ottoman were placed in the corner of the room paired with the Funco side table. Artwork was chosen to create interest and add colour, complementing the contemporary wing back desk chair.
It was a pleasure working with Gemstone Developments on this stunning modern home designed by Barry Hobin Architecture. Our goal was to furnish and decorate the home in such a way that potential buyers could envision themselves living in the space, while also accentuating the existing interior design. We are pleased to announce 894 Colonel By Drive was sold just three months after the staging project was completed.

Accoya was selected as the ideal material for this breathtaking home in West Vancouver. Accoya was used for the railing, siding, fencing and soffits throughout the property. In addition, an Accoya handrail was specifically custom designed by Upper Canada Forest Products.
Design Duo Matt McLeod and Lisa Bovell of McLeod Bovell Modern houses switched between fluidity, plasticity, malleability and even volumetric design to try capture their process of space-making.
Unlike anything surrounding it, this home’s irregular shape and atypical residential building materials are more akin to modern-day South American projects that stem from their surroundings to showcase concrete’s versatility. This is why the Accoya was left in its rough state, to accentuate the minimalist and harmonious aesthetics of its natural environment.
