Winner of the 2018 Tour of Homes Best Remodel, this whole house re-design of a 1963 Bennet & Johnson mid-century raised ranch home is a beautiful example of the magic we can weave through the application of more sustainable modern design principles to existing spaces.
We worked closely with our client on extensive updates to create a modernized MCM gem.
Extensive alterations include:
- a completely redesigned floor plan to promote a more intuitive flow throughout
- vaulted the ceilings over the great room to create an amazing entrance and feeling of inspired openness
- redesigned entry and driveway to be more inviting and welcoming as well as to experientially set the mid-century modern stage
- the removal of a visually disruptive load bearing central wall and chimney system that formerly partitioned the homes’ entry, dining, kitchen and living rooms from each other
- added clerestory windows above the new kitchen to accentuate the new vaulted ceiling line and create a greater visual continuation of indoor to outdoor space
- drastically increased the access to natural light by increasing window sizes and opening up the floor plan
- placed natural wood elements throughout to provide a calming palette and cohesive Pacific Northwest feel
- incorporated Universal Design principles to make the home Aging In Place ready with wide hallways and accessible spaces, including single-floor living if needed
- moved and completely redesigned the stairway to work for the home’s occupants and be a part of the cohesive design aesthetic
- mixed custom tile layouts with more traditional tiling to create fun and playful visual experiences
- custom designed and sourced MCM specific elements such as the entry screen, cabinetry and lighting
- development of the downstairs for potential future use by an assisted living caretaker
- energy efficiency upgrades seamlessly woven in with much improved insulation, ductless mini splits and solar gain

This stunning handscraped engineered hardwood flooring features hickory planks that are further enhanced with hand-applied chatter marks giving each plank its unique character. The flooring ads to the comfortable, lived-in atmosphere to this loft-style man cave that invites you to play a game of pool, take a nap, or saddle up and have a beer at the bar.
In the flooring industry, there’s no shortage of competition. If you’re looking for hardwoods, you’ll find thousands of product options and hundreds of people willing to install them for you. The same goes for tile, carpet, laminate, etc.
At Fantastic Floors, our mission is to provide a quality product, at a competitive price, with a level of service that exceeds our competition. We don’t “sell” floors. We help you find the perfect floors for your family in our design center or bring the showroom to you free of charge. Industrial edge, softly tailored.
DESIGN DESCRIPTION
In this loft-style home, raw architecture meets the refinement of a tailored suit. Exposed concrete ceilings sit above classic white wall panelling and warm herringbone oak floors, giving every room a balance of grit and grace. In the living room, a deep taupe velvet sectional, smoked glass tables and a cowhide rug invite lounging, while a sculptural smoked-chrome pendant floats above the dining table. The kitchen pairs Calacatta marble with bronze-toned cabinetry and a waterfall island lined with bentwood stools. In the bedrooms, charcoal upholstery, inky drapery and graphic black-and-white rugs create a moody, hotel-like calm. The bathrooms continue the story with cerused oak vanities, brushstroke tile and crisp modern fixtures. The result is urban luxury: bold, layered and effortlessly livable.

A generous parking and auto court with four car parking and ample room to manuever is provided at the family entrance and mudroom. The second garage is attached by a breezeway. Artful dormers and roof gables, combine with individual single car garage doors to demonstrate that even a four-car garage wall can look charming and friendly.

Continuous development and improvement are the basis of all kitchen designs at Miele.

The house was built in 1963 and is reinforced cinder block construction, unusual for California, which makes any renovation work trickier. The kitchen we replaced featured all maple cabinets and floors and pale pink countertops. With the remodel we didn’t change the layout, or any window/door openings. The cabinets may read as white, but they are actually cream with an antique glaze on a flat panel door. All countertops and backsplash are granite. The original copper hood was replaced by a custom one in zinc. Dark brick veneer fireplace is now covered in white limestone. The homeowners do a lot of entertaining, so even though the overall layout didn’t change, I knew just what needed to be done to improve function. The husband loves to cook and is beyond happy with his 6-burner stove.

A central focal point is the new gas fireplace which is stone clad and wraps into a walnut bookcase which then turns into the stair railing. High ceilings and medium tone oak flooring compliments the cedar planks of the vaulted ceiling.
