We added beautiful moulding and wainscoting throughout and finished the home with chrome and black finishes. Replace worn furnishings with stylish white, lime, and turquoise metal furniture, designed to fit the scale and proportion of the space with practical Sunbrella fabrics in bright lime, turquoise, and white, repeated in combinations of solids, stripes, and diamond patterns, used with wise restraint and adding textural contrast to rough masonry, and shiny stainless steel for a smashing new look. A former butler's pantry at the rear of the home was converted to a breakfast nook that overlooks the backyard with a door providing easy access to the barbecue grill. The Grange table is surrounded by Baker chairs. A wall had formerly enclosed the back staircase, which runs from the basement to the third story. A striped sisal rug adds a casual counterpoint to a 19th-century tole chandelier with Capo di Monte porcelain roses.

Rock outcroppings make a striking background for new lounge areas in this compact Los Angeles hillside garden. Working with the attributes of the site, we added native plants to drape over the stone, and converted hollowed stone planters into a firepit and water feature. The backyard was small and uninviting until we transformed it into a comfortable and functional area for entertaining. The front yard was leveled and converted into a play area for two small children and two large dogs. The client is very allergic to bees, so plants were selected with great care.

This Boerum Hill, Brooklyn backyard features an ipe deck, knotty cedar fencing, artificial turf, a cedar pergola with corrugated metal roof, stepping stones, and loose Mexican beach stones. The contemporary outdoor furniture is from Restoration Hardware. Plantings are a lush mix of grasses, cherry trees, bamboo, roses, trumpet vines, variegated irises, hydrangeas, and sky pencil hollies.

The front yard was sloped down so a new retaining wall was built with matching brick work to the existing architecture. Inside the wall we planted a hedge to provide privacy for the new usable space as comfortable as any back yard patio space. ©Daniel Bosler Photography
