Shades of blue in this master bedroom create a calming retreat. In combination with antique white, black and taupe, it conveys drama and contrast. The sofa and wing chairs were slipcovered in Schumacher's iconic Chiang Mai Dragon fabric. This fabric was the leaping off point for the entire condo. Built-in bookshelves house the extensive collection of hardcover books, and all the walls, doors, bookshelves were done in Farrow & Ball's Parma Gray. Many people can’t see beyond the current aesthetics when looking to buy a house, but this innovative couple recognized the good bones of their mid-century style home in Golden’s Applewood neighborhood and were determined to make the necessary updates to create the perfect space for their family. In order to turn this older residence into a modern home that would meet the family’s current lifestyle, we replaced all the original windows with new, wood-clad black windows. The design of window is a nod to the home’s mid-century roots with modern efficiency and a polished appearance. We also wanted the interior of the home to feel connected to the awe-inspiring outside, so we opened up the main living area with a vaulted ceiling. To add a contemporary but sleek look to the fireplace, we crafted the mantle out of cold rolled steel. The texture of the cold rolled steel conveys a natural aesthetic and pairs nicely with the walnut mantle we built to cap the steel, uniting the design in the kitchen and the built-in entryway. Everyone at Factor developed rich relationships with this beautiful family while collaborating through the design and build of their freshly renovated, contemporary home. The rain from the large roof is captured and evenly spread down a flat wire mesh and into a channel the crosses under the deck, emerging into a cobble swale through the meadow. Not only is the small amount of rain we get in California a precious commodity it can ironically become a vector of harmful pollutants. The typical scenario would quickly convey this water to the gutter where it would pick up speed and volume and collect chemicals from the street, eventually entering a creek or ocean where we and wildlife swim in it. This stylish Brentwood home had recently been renovated while preserving the integrity of its original mid-century design, and architecture. With furniture and furnishings true to the stylish time period, this was a perfect yard to imitate the aesthetics of the infamous Brazilian Landscape Architect, Burle Marx. This family needed a fun, yet functional space to host friends and family; but wanted to preserve the timeless aesthetics of the stylish Mid-Century flare. Burle Marx is famous for his organic nature within modernist landscape architecture. We pulled inspiration from Marx, as one of the first people to call for the conservation of Brazil’s rainforests, to introduce a palette of native and beneficial plant materials to mimic his environmental efforts. We also pulled from his artistic expressions with our curved and dramatic garden bed lines, and placement of specimen plantings. Designer Brittany Hutt specified Homecrest Cabinetry’s Dove Cherry door in the color Cinnamon, which conveys a bit of a natural appearance, perfect for a home in a beach town. A traditional style Granite Countertop called Colonial Cream complements the warm tone of the kitchen cabinets. The cabinets were complete with the super sleek Hopewell Bar Pulls in a Brushed Satin Nickel Finish from Top Knobs Hardware.

This bedroom was previously the client's son's bedroom. Since he is no longer living at home, our client decided to turn it into a guest room. We redesigned the room to provide a calm space any guest would enjoy. Our client selected a lavender palette to convey a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. As we did throughout the renovated second level, we refinished the existing floors to a dark espresso, so the colors of the walls, bedding and upholstery look even more vivid. Floor to ceiling floral draperies make the windows seem larger and the ceiling higher and complement the lavender walls and bedding. Frameless lotus flower photography above the bed brings the room colors and floral accents together.

Empty nesters take on a new life and new home in Northwest DC. Downsizing has its monumental challenges, and that was definitely the case with this project. The clients wanted a very narrow, partially below-ground, and slightly sterile space to feel like home. Ralph Lauren was our inspiration - both the clients and I love rich plaids, warm textures and touches of leather mixed with interesting metals. Because the rowhouse is so narrow, we added an entire wall of navy blue built-ins to the living space to create the illusion of more depth while adding much-needed storage. We wanted this home to convey the feeling of a favorite cashmere sweater, worn jeans and Gucci loafers.

Yup, your eyes do not deceive you. This is a real fishing boat cut in half and mounted on the ceiling. The hand painted mural/ artwork conveys a peaceful afternoon in the ocean from the perspective of a fish. The client has spent many a fine day fishing with his family, and wanted to celebrate his hobby in a big way. The ceiling includes my client catching a big marlin, with the end of a pole and actual line going to the Marlin mounted on the wall. His wife Peggy is enjoying the breeze and his daughter is dangling her feet in the water. His son has a snorkel mask on, peering down into the great room.

Aesthetic Value: The subtle lines and light color of the radiata pine stringer model spiral provide nice contrast with the eccentric iron balustrade. Laser cut Tinkerbells and abstract Mickey Mouse and fireworks elements contribute unique detail. Stair Safety: The balustrade rejects a 4" sphere in all areas despite the complex detail of the components and floating rail above the laser cut elements. Quality: The balustrade features predominantly laser cut sections fabricated with minimal visible welds and custom finished in-house with a three step guilders paste application. Technical Challenge: Creating the complex ironwork design in a way that has aesthetically pleasing sections that fit the theme and space. Attention to meticulous details that convey the theme even at deepest levels of observing the stair.
