A new arched opening to the dining room provides for more of an open space for ease of daily use and practical entertaining. The large island workspace seats three comfortably and provides a view to the backyard in two directions while cozying up to the existing fireplace which is a lovely focal point for the space. The clients love of nature and desire for a tranquil space helped determine the beach inspired palette of sand, green and blue. A textured off white subway tile backsplash with bands of colored glass tile give a sense of rhythm to the simple lines of the space. A farm sink and a decorative stainless hood add personality to the room. Bud Kane has remodeled nearly every room in his own home over many years. Now reaching his 70’s, he contemplated heading up a major kitchen and laundry room renovation himself, planning on doing the carpentry work with his own hands. “I was not convinced I would ever meet anyone who could do it as well as I could do it myself”, said Bud. Ruth and Bud spent 5 years visiting kitchen firms and interviewing designers. They couldn’t however bring themselves to pull the trigger on the project, until they met Advance Design Studio in 2015. “No one understood what I wanted”, said Ruth. She was continually frustrated by experiences with designers who weren’t hearing what was important to her. “Everyone kept designing my kitchen with what they thought it should look like; I couldn’t find anyone who would listen to me”! When they met designer Scott Christensen from Advance Design Studio, they liked him right away. He listened to Ruth and designed a kitchen that she loved, all the while interjecting years of wisdom and design expertise that Ruth appreciated. “The finished product is better than I expected”, says Ruth. “I respected Scott’s opinions and together we created the perfect place for me to bake with my grandkids and truly enjoy the kitchen and laundry room I’ve been dreaming of for many years!” The kitchen transformation began with removing the home’s soffits, and extending new painted maple cabinetry to the ceiling with the addition of an elegant crown molding. Ruth’s new Vita Mix holds a coveted place on her counter, and adjustments were planned to size the cabinets in conjunction with the under cabinet decorative light molding to fit this appliance just right. “This one small detail was really important to me”, says Ruth smiling. An elegant new island replaced the original island, complete with room for 3 stools where her grandchildren will sit to make home-made pasta every Thanksgiving, and cookies at Christmas time. “Traditions are very important in my family, and making my kitchen work to suit cherished activities with my family was the number one reason this renovation was so desired”, replied Ruth when asked about the island. A picture perfect new tea station replaced a cluttered unused desk area, creating a wonderful place to prepare hot drinks for sipping any season of the year while overlooking the couple’s wonderfully manicured gardens from the lovely 3 season’s room just off the kitchen. The soft sage island bead panel detail was repeated on the backsplash, replicating the feel of a fine old piece of furniture. The biggest problem with the laundry room was 3 doors, one from the garage, one from the closet, and one to the hallway. “Scott designed a pocket door, and oh what a dream it is now to bring groceries in from the garage!” exclaims Bud who grew to disdain this task! Doing laundry is now a breeze in this attractive new space that doubles as a wonderful pantry for the kitchen with room to store food items that didn’t have a home in the poorly designed original space. New Hickory distressed wood flooring was laid both in the kitchen and leading to the hall foyer. Soft gray wood-replicating porcelain was placed in the laundry area, making for an easily cleanable surface for what doubles as a mud room from the garage. Creamy tumbled marble graces an unobtrusive backsplash spilling onto shiny granite counter tops in a rich earthy pattern of fall colors that mimic colors throughout the home. Advance is known details that included custom crafted furniture toe kicks, luxurious crown moldings, and beaded under cabinet moldings. The kitchen is complete with a glass display cabinet showing Ruth’s treasured china tea collection. Early on, it was initially only their intention of purchasing cabinets for the new design. They were so impressed however with Advance Design’s complete program for budgeting, design, installation and management that it became clear to them both that they wanted Advance to handle the entire project from start to finish. “After seeing the quality work they did, coupled with the in-house team completely dedicated to our satisfaction, it became apparent there was no other choice but to hire them to handle everything. And we’re so glad we did, we have not one regret”, says Bud. “The attention to detail by the carpentry crew more than satisfied my perfectionist expectations of the finished carpentry,” exclaimed Bud. “Every one of Advance Design’s people we encountered from design through construction was wonderful. We’ve never met a group of people so dedicated to making sure we were happy with every single detail, and every single part of this experience”, said Ruth and Bud. This 1,200 square-foot Provincetown condominium lives large, both functionally and aesthetically, thanks to its recent renovation. The waterfront home, overlooking Cape Cod Bay, is part of an historic grouping of three individual buildings on Commercial Street that have been combined into condominiums. Begun in November 2014 and completed just in time for summer in May 2016, b Architecture Studios and Cape Associates Builders worked with a budget of $366,000 to transform this prosaic dwelling into a stunning light-flooded space—designed to maximize both the living space and the mesmerizing views of the bay. “The space was totally reconfigured,” said project manager Jon Ziperman. “It was a total gut job requiring leveling of floors, straightening of walls, removing a chimney and fireplace that ran up to the above neighbors’ unit.” The renovation also required a complete rewiring and plumbing system that involved wires and pipes that were integrated into the surrounding units. From wall to wall and floor to ceiling, there was nothing that could be salvaged from the original space. One of the most prominent changes was moving the stairway from its original placement, where it originally broke up the living and dining space and blocked views to the bay beyond. The stairway now sits on the opposite side of the condominium. With the stairs tucked to the left side of the living area, the sightline now extends from the entry straight through the living and dining areas to the water. The new design allowed for storage space beneath the stairs, which lead to an airy sleeping loft, and room for a desk niche. A light well, where the former sleeping area was, and new windows bring abundant natural light to the central living area. Innovative features in the entry room include a Murphy bed and sliding glass door separating it from the living area, so that the space can double as a guest room. “The Murphy bed fit in nicely, allowing for a flush wall at the entry/guest room and a desk niche in the adjacent room,” Brown said. “Convincing the client to create the wrap-around chair rail, lined up with the divided lights of the sliding glass door, makes a purposeful connection in a small space.” Neolith countertops in the open kitchen and details like the flush minimal baseboard contribute to the sleek, modern aesthetic, now complemented by the owner’s contemporary furnishings. This complete renovation has rendered this compact home worthy of its beautiful setting.

These clients (who were referred by their realtor) are lucky enough to escape the brutal Minnesota winters. They trusted the PID team to remodel their home with Landmark Remodeling while they were away enjoying the sun and escaping the pains of remodeling... dust, noise, so many boxes. The clients wanted to update without a major remodel. They also wanted to keep some of the warm golden oak in their space...something we are not used to! We laded on painting the cabinetry, new counters, new back splash, lighting, and floors. We also refaced the corner fireplace in the living room with a natural stacked stone and mantle. The powder bath got a little facelift too and convinced another victim... we mean the client that wallpaper was a must.

The combination of white and wood-stained cabinets with the wide-plank, wood floor creates a warm-cool “temperature” in this suburban Chicago bachelor’s kitchen. It also fulfilled my client’s desire for walnut wood elements. For architectural interest and heft, I added crown molding to all of the cabinetry. The crisp edges of the raised-panel cabinets, the countertops and the cabinet hardware give the space masculine appeal without going overboard. I convinced my client to choose durable, easily maintained Dekton countertops instead of the marble he requested, which can be a high-maintenance surface. When friends heard that we were planning to build a new home (especially at our time in life) we were regaled with stories of frustration, mistakes, and financial complications. We were convinced it was right to build a small efficient home, so the stories were dismissed with the conviction that we would find the RIGHT general contractor to avoid the pitfalls of home construction. Our decision to use Todd Swanson and Bio-Hab Inc. reflected our desire to use natural, energy efficient materials and systems, to stay small, and to work with a contractor expressing honesty, open-ness, and common sense. We also welcomed his artistic talent in designing and finish work using natural materials -earth plaster,earth floors, wood exteriors and more. We began by working with a designer and Todd in our house design. Todd collaborated with the designer to not only make the design more beautiful and functional, but also practical to construct. We are very pleased with the finished product and love our home. It was easy AND a pleasure to work with Todd. We appreciated his high standard sub contractors and lead men- not only were they professional, they were cheerful to have around! This project was for a long time client of mine who lives in a wonderful patio home with a finished basement. There were several challenges with which to contend. First, as you enter the Foyer, all of the spaces are open to each other so we had to make sure everything worked together. Second, furniture arrangement had always been a struggle for the large living area with the fireplace on an angled corner wall and large built-in. Last, although the homeowner loves color – especially blue/greens – we had to convince her to bring it into her home as an accent and make it work with the other spaces. We started with a neutral sofa positioned across from the built-ins and paired it with a settee in a blue/green fabric. The settee does not block the fireplace and reinforces our color scheme. The homeowner upgraded her husband’s chair and ottoman with a contemporary leather one, and we added a perfectly scaled swivel chair to the corner next to the built-ins. We finished off the space with a mixture of unique accent tables including a beautiful coffee table with wood inlay, a small metal french drink table, a two-tiered egg shaped table, and a pedestal table with marble top. We added lighting, artwork and accessories to the built-ins and tables to complete the space. We also added blue/green accessories to the breakfast area to make the spaces flow seamlessly. We love how these spaces in the Open Concept Redesign turned out. It is a very pleasing palette that does not overwhelm the spaces, but adds interest. Enjoy!

You might not agree for the all-white bathroom, right? Well, most of the people think that it is not the right choice to go for the whole space painted in white color. But trust us, this is one of the hottest trends these days! To go unique, people also select white wall and floor tiles even for their kitchens! So, of course you may go with all-white bathrooms. To convince you on this note, we would suggest you to select tiles that are of gray or dull charcoal in color and have light texture. This would bring a subtle yet urbane look into your bathroom.

When clients in Williamsburg, Va. Purchased a brick ranch, built in the late 80’s They knew they were in for a total gut rehab. The kitchen had been updated but consisted of reddish stained oak cabinets, Corian counters, and soffits galore. The room was separated by a peninsula with a cook top, creating a U-shaped configuration. It was not only dated but separated the room from the breakfast area. One wall consisted of wall ovens, a pantry, and a built-in desk space. Although, we were constrained to a tight budget, they specifically requested the house not have a traditional colonial vibe, common to the locality. Once we convinced the husband that it was paramount to remove walls, we were able to reimagine the space. The wall ovens were replaced with a single range, the refrigerator was placed on the same wall as the sink and the soffits were removed. With a tight budget, custom cabinets were not an option. Instead, they purchased stock cabinets that were painted a cool gray and the new island is stained in a natural finish . Typically, I don’t recycle products amongst clients, but these pendants have proven otherwise. After installing them in my own kitchen, I’ve had 3 other client requests for the same pair. Obviously, they don’t disappoint as they are the crown jewels of the kitchen.
