To give the light and airy look that our client desired, we began the dining room design by hanging custom 21' tall sheer drapes from a custom curved iron drapery rod. This was accomplished by making a paper template of the curved window wall and mailing it to the drapery rod vendor to have a custom curved rod manufactured for our dining room. Next, we hung a 60" diameter dramatic chandelier from the ceiling. This required reinforcing the ceiling to carry the weight of the new larger chandelier, and by erecting three tiers of scaffolding for three men to stand on while installing the new chandelier. The space is anchored by a 72" diameter dining table with tall back dining chairs to emphasize the height of the room. An 81" tall piece of artwork hangs above the modern buffet and provides contrast to the white walls. Tall buffet lamps, custom greenery and a textured woven rug complete the dramatic space. A simple color scheme and large dramatic pieces make this dining room a breathtaking space to remember.

Master Bed - The inspiration for the space was to pull in the bachelors love for his military background as a pilot while incorporating a masculine feel but with soft, welcoming touches. We complemented the space with more custom bedding that had a blue, cream, and golden palette and amazing textures & patterns. The client had some existing artwork from his daughters, but the pieces above the bed (airplane), area rug, requested seating at the end of the bed to read the morning paper & watch the news at the end of the night, and nightstand & dresser...were all newly procured pieces specific to his needs.

Our goal was to complete the project prior to baby’s arrival so this project went on the expedite track. The beautiful 1920’s era brick home sits on a hill in a very picturesque neighborhood, so we were eager to give it the kitchen it deserves. The clients’ dream kitchen included pro-style appliances, a large island with seating for five and a kitchen that feels appropriate to the home’s era but that also is fresh and modern. They explicitly stated they did not want a “cookie cutter” design, so we took that to heart. The key challenge was to fit in all of the items on their wish given the room’s constraints. We eliminated an existing breakfast area and bay window and incorporated that area into the kitchen. The bay window was bricked in, and to compensate for the loss of seating, we widened the opening between the kitchen and formal dining room for more of an open concept plan. The ceiling in the original kitchen is about a foot lower than the rest of the house, and once it was determined that it was to hide pipes and other mechanicals, we reframed a large tray over the island and left the rest of the ceiling as is. Clad in walnut planks, the tray provides an interesting feature and ties in with the custom walnut and plaster hood. The space feels modern yet appropriate to its Tudor roots. The room boasts large family friendly appliances, including a beverage center and cooktop/double oven combination. Soft white inset cabinets paired with a slate gray island provide a gentle backdrop to the multi-toned island top, a color echoed in the backsplash tile. The handmade subway tile has a textured pattern at the cooktop, and large pendant lights add more than a bit of drama to the room. The original unimposing cookie cutter stairway occupied the center of the entry foyer blocking the view from the entry to the backyard. This stairway was removed, a cantilevered landing was installed on the second level and a graceful curved staircase installed. Accented with an ornamental wrought iron railing, glazed risers and hardwood treads this majestic staircase provides an open view into the beautiful backyard of this 5-acre estate.

Previously a bland cookie-cutter condo, we took down walls to create a contemporary open floor plan and added coffered ceilings with recessed lighting, punctuated by the gray ceiling that coordinates with the fabrics . The curved soffit echoes the shape of the kitchen island nearby and creates a lighted pathway down the corridor. Motorized shades of sheer and solid fabric can be closed to protect furniture from sun fading or opened to any point, exposing a stunning ocean view.

They asked us to incorporate many of their precious antiques and art pieces into the new design. Our challenges here were twofold; first, how to deal with the unconventional curved floor plan with vast South facing windows that provide a 180 degree view of downtown Vancouver, and second, how to successfully merge an eclectic collection of antique pieces into a modern setting. We began by updating most of their artwork with new matting and framing. We created a gallery effect by grouping like artwork together and displaying larger pieces on the sections of wall between the windows, lighting them with black wall sconces for a graphic effect. We re-upholstered their antique seating with more contemporary fabrics choices - a gray flannel on their Victorian fainting couch and a fun orange chenille animal print on their Louis style chairs. We selected black as an accent colour for many of the accessories as well as the dining room wall to give the space a sophisticated modern edge. The new pieces that we added, including the sofa, coffee table and dining light fixture are mid century inspired, bridging the gap between old and new.
