AN OPEN HEART. The kitchen area grew to become the hub of the home, easily accessed from all areas of the house. Classic cherry cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, a honed limestone countertop and a lively tile backsplash of recycled glass are showpieces in this new family center. The backsplash, like the cork floor, makes a sustainable statement.

Nestled between multiple stands of Live Oak trees, the Westlake Residence is a contemporary Texas Hill Country home. The house is designed to accommodate the entire family, yet flexible in its design to be able to scale down into living only in 2,200 square feet when the children leave in several years. The home includes many state-of-the-art green features and multiple flex spaces capable of hosting large gatherings or small, intimate groups. The flow and design of the home provides for privacy from surrounding properties and streets, as well as to focus all of the entertaining to the center of the home. Finished in late 2006, the home features Icynene insulation, cork floors and thermal chimneys to exit warm air in the expansive family room.

“I don’t want my kitchen to look like anyone else’s.” This was the client’s request to the designer. Influenced by the style of Bali and the client’s own design sense, the new style was dubbed “Julinese” (her name is Julie).
In keeping with the Balinese style, bold design elements were chosen – 6” pyramidal columns stained with a deep java finish, support the 3” thick Purple Dunas granite countertops and the custom glass eating bar. The electrical outlets are housed in these columns.
Further supporting the Balinese theme, the ceiling over the island was raised in a pyramid style – evoking an outdoor feel. Kable lighting illuminates the kitchen.
Topping the cabinets along the walls and the window sill are dark grey 3” thick concrete counters. When the folding windows are open, the sill becomes a 15” deep serving bar for outdoor entertaining.
For ergonomics – the dishwasher and microwave were raised to 42” and 54” comparatively.

Cork floors in Autumn and Black Pepper finish

Although small, the kitchen has room to seat four people, as well as a large pantry. Open cubbies throughout the space make for great display areas.

A small kitchen needs to be designed by being cognizant of every kitchen item the client owns and when the kitchen is only 90 sq ft, this can be quite challenging!
The original kitchen housed a double wall oven, cook top and 36” range. Since space was at a minimum and the client’s list for appliances was extensive (range, warming drawer, wine refrigerator, dishwasher, ref) we had to think quite creatively. We also had 2 doors to contend with and 2 focal points to create!
The first step was to move to a 27” wide refrigerator, this gained 9 additional inches of working counter space between the sink and refrigerator. Opting for a 24” wide single bowl sink over the original 30” netted a total of 15” for a tray divider cabinet and 39” of working counter space between the sink and the refrigerator!
The new 30” range was positioned as star on the same wall as the existing cook top. Since the space did not lend us the ability to balance the cabinet doors sizes on both sides of the hood, we chose a door style that focused your eyes not on the overall size of the door, but on the vertical detailing. The subtle grain of the Rift White Oak further minimized the odd sizing of the doors.
(NOTE: THE COLOURS OF THE KITCHEN ARE REPRESENTED PROPERLY IN THE PHOTO OF THE RANGE WALL)
To help create a visual width of the room – we used a glass tile set in a horizontal pattern. Our ultimate goal for this space was to create a calm and flowing space, all appliances are fully integrated to enhance the visual flow to the room.

Contemporary metal fireplace facades, clean lined cabinetry and iridescent glass tile create a crisp decor. Cork floors, luxurious rugs and furniture upholstered in velvety textures give a sense of warmth.

Her Office will primarily serve as a craft room for her and kids, so we did a cork floor that would be easy to clean and still comfortable to sit on. The fabrics are all indoor/outdoor and commercial grade for durability. We wanted to maintain a girly look so we added really feminine touches with the crystal chandelier, floral accessories to match the wallpaper and pink accents through out the room to really pop against the green.
