This project was a gut renovation of a loft on Park Ave. South in Manhattan – it’s the personal residence of Andrew Petronio, partner at KA Design Group. Bilotta Senior Designer, Jeff Eakley, has worked with KA Design for 20 years. When it was time for Andrew to do his own kitchen, working with Jeff was a natural choice to bring it to life. Andrew wanted a modern, industrial, European-inspired aesthetic throughout his NYC loft. The allotted kitchen space wasn’t very big; it had to be designed in such a way that it was compact, yet functional, to allow for both plenty of storage and dining. Having an island look out over the living room would be too heavy in the space; instead they opted for a bar height table and added a second tier of cabinets for extra storage above the walls, accessible from the black-lacquer rolling library ladder. The dark finishes were selected to separate the kitchen from the rest of the vibrant, art-filled living area – a mix of dark textured wood and a contrasting smooth metal, all custom-made in Bilotta Collection Cabinetry. The base cabinets and refrigerator section are a horizontal-grained rift cut white oak with an Ebony stain and a wire-brushed finish. The wall cabinets are the focal point – stainless steel with a dark patina that brings out black and gold hues, picked up again in the blackened, brushed gold decorative hardware from H. Theophile. The countertops by Eastern Stone are a smooth Black Absolute; the backsplash is a black textured limestone from Artistic Tile that mimics the finish of the base cabinets. The far corner is all mirrored, elongating the room. They opted for the all black Bertazzoni range and wood appliance panels for a clean, uninterrupted run of cabinets. In this 1905 Tudor home, the intent of this design was to take advantage of the classic architecture of the home and incorporate modern conveniences. Located in the Joseph Berry Subdivision in Detroit, this stellar home presented several design challenges. The most difficult challenge to overcome was the 11” slope from one end of the kitchen to the other, caused by 110 years of settling. All new floor joists were installed and the floor by the side door was then recessed down one step. This created a cozy nook when you first enter the kitchen. A tiered ceiling with strategically planned cabinetry heights and crown molding concealed the slope of the walls at the ceiling level. The second challenge in this historic home was the awkward foot print of the kitchen. It’s likely that this kitchen had a butler’s pantry originally. However it was remodeled sometime in the 70’s and all original character was erased. Clever pantry storage was added to an awkward corner creating a space that mimicked the essence of a butler’s pantry, while providing storage desired in kitchens today. Keeping the large footprint of the kitchen presented obstacles with the working triangle; the distance from the sink to the cooktop is several feet. The solution was installation of a pot filler over the cooktop that added convenience and elegance (not sure about this word). Not everything in this project was a challenge; the discovery of a brick chimney hiding behind plaster was a welcome surprise and brought character back honoring the historic charm of this beautiful home. A beautiful Transitional kitchen design with Traditional elements. A decorative wood hood with tile insert details was incorporated over the range. X mullion stacked upper cabinetry with glass and LED lighting highlights this impressive feature. Magic corner & corner drawers base storage cabinets were used to maximize storage in the base corner locations. Existing drywall vent cover & wire rack closet pantry was removed and cabinet pantries were cleverly used to house vent and allow a storage of narrow items around the vent while full depth storage was accessible by the old closet area. Bar storage drawers were added to the wine cooler area. Fridge & Freezer were enclosed with cabinetry materials and an added narrow pantry for spice storage. Products used were Miralis cabinetry, Fully Integrated Liebherr Fridge & Freezer, LED cabinetry & ceiling lighting, Silestone Altair quartz tops, C-Tech Lucerne Ice White Quartzo sink, Vent a Hood blower and Walker Zanger vintage Oyster backsplashes that added a beautiful flavor to the kitchen. A built-in media cabinet can make a corner almost disappear as it smooths the edges of the room. Fitted with mullioned glass doors and solid lower doors, it serves as both a display cabinet and provides storage for books and routers, serving a purpose that's both functional and stylish.

For this Wake Forest NC remodeled space we used light gray base cabinets (Gray Owl) and white (Steam) uppers/fridge wall cabinetry. The Crate and Barrel Nolan pendants draw your eyes up to the ceiling where we installed hand hewn wood beams with a custom stain applied. For the flooring, we used Mixwax Rustic Beige.

Maximizing the functionality of this space, and coordinating the new kitchen with the beautiful remodel completed previously by the client were the two most important aspects of this project. The existing spaces are elegantly decorated with an open plan, dark hardwood floors, and natural stone accents. The new, lighter, more open kitchen flows beautifully into the client’s existing dining room space. Satin nickel hardware blends with the stainless steel appliances and matches the satin nickel details throughout the home. The fully integrated refrigerator next to the narrow pull-out pantry cabinet, take up less visual weight than a traditional stainless steel appliance and the two combine to provide fantastic storage. The glass cabinet doors and decorative lighting beautifully highlight the client’s glassware and dishes.
