As publishers of multiple local newspapers, the Allens have a deadline-driven schedule and were looking for a low-maintenance, low-carbon place of respite. Coming from a large but dark 1970s suburban home for their blended family, they craved light, openness, and connection to nature. Perched on a wooded north-facing slope overlooking a canal, the site required a design that could balance competing interests for Northern views with ample Southern exposure for light and warmth. The lower south-facing roof also plans for photovoltaic panels, which, when installed, will supply most, if not all of the home’s annual energy needs. With a modest custom-home budget, the design team optimized the architecture for minimal waste and used off-the-shelf products and technologies in creative ways to achieve targets for Passive House air tightness. The dated home was taken down to the studs, reimagined, reconstructed and completely furnished for modern-day family life. A neutral paint scheme complemented the open plan. Clean lined cabinet hardware with accented details like glass and contrasting finishes added depth. In the top floor of the Hopkinson House lived a neglected, dingy corner apartment facing Washington Square. The new owner purchased the unit and undertook a complete gut renovation of the space. With parallels to her own life, the owner craved a new, fresh, light filled, colorful space to call her own. The design centers around a retractable suede wall panel system which when open, draws in the western sun, creating a spacious living area. When closed, it allows for a guest bedroom complete with Murphy bed. Fine finishes accent the space throughout and wood shelving provide displays for an extensive teapot collection.

This room was previously a separate kitchen and dining space. By removing the wall int he middle of the room, and spanning abeam the width of the room we were able to create a much more functional great room for these clients. With an industrial feel with brick, exposed beams, pipe and plank details throughout, this space is something a little different. perfect for this family with an open mind and a craving for anything but ordinary.

These clients really enjoy their backyard space, with gardening and spending time with friends and family. They also practice yoga, and craved to have a space that could be their own personal yoga studio. The only problem they had in this space was a storage shed that wasn’t functional for them. With their wants and needs, the homeowners came to us because they wanted a functioning space to practice their love of yoga. This shed accomplishes that needs. We installed double hung Richlin Windows and a Marvin Integrity sliding patio door, all in a Bronze finish. Cedar corbels and beams, tongue and groove floor planks on their 3’ porch, a cedar trellis to replicate existing pergola, exposed trusses, cedar tongue and groove siding, and a stacked seam steel roof add to the charm of this shed. When I visited this 1970’s split-level home in Golden, Colorado for the first time, the space on this main floor was broken up into 3 rooms. The kitchen was crammed into the center of the space and covered in small, 1970’s cabinets. This family loves to cook together and entertain friends - they craved a space that could support two active cooks and plenty of hang-out room for friends. We took out walls and added a window to get the space light and bright. I added a banquette area to create a more intimate space near the bay window. This home remodel is a celebration of curves and light. Starting from humble beginnings as a basic builder ranch style house, the design challenge was maximizing natural light throughout and providing the unique contemporary style the client’s craved. The Entry offers a spectacular first impression and sets the tone with a large skylight and an illuminated curved wall covered in a wavy pattern Porcelanosa tile. The chic entertaining kitchen was designed to celebrate a public lifestyle and plenty of entertaining. Celebrating height with a robust amount of interior architectural details, this dynamic kitchen still gives one that cozy feeling of home sweet home. The large “L” shaped island accommodates 7 for seating. Large pendants over the kitchen table and sink provide additional task lighting and whimsy. The Dekton “puzzle” countertop connection was designed to aid the transition between the two color countertops and is one of the homeowner’s favorite details. The built-in bistro table provides additional seating and flows easily into the Living Room. A curved wall in the Living Room showcases a contemporary linear fireplace and tv which is tucked away in a niche. Placing the fireplace and furniture arrangement at an angle allowed for more natural walkway areas that communicated with the exterior doors and the kitchen working areas. The dining room’s open plan is perfect for small groups and expands easily for larger events.
