In this project the home owner was a furniture importer, so she had an amazing array of decorative elements to add to the design. After spending years traveling through Indonesia and India on buying trips, she wanted a taste of the tropics in her own back yard. We worked together to incorporate her beautiful objects into an undeniably tropical-feeling space. By carefully selecting plants and their placement, we were able to achieve the lush green feel of Bali or Hawaii in the Southern California climate without using a lot of water. After installation, this oasis is alive with birds and dragonflies. Lush green plantings create microclimates around the house that help cool the property on hot days. Integrating edible trees provides the homeowner with pomegranates, several types of guavas, lemons, limes, and bananas. Today, the homeowner rents out her home and garden for photo shoots and weddings.

Stuart Wade, Envision Virtual Tours Lake Lanier Custom Homes Envision Web Nestled in the foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains and nurtured by the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers, Lake Sidney Lanier is named for the poet Sidney Clopton Lanier, whose admiration of the area's scenic beauty inspired him to compose his famous "Song of the Chattahoochee". Lake Lanier is one of America's favorite lakes. With several million visitors annually enjoying its recreational facilities, it has been the most visited Corp of Engineers project in the nation. One reason for the lake's popularity is its proximity to metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. A well-developed road network surrounds Lake Lanier, with several highways crossing the main body. Visitors can enjoy the city of Atlanta and, in the space of a short drive, can lose themselves in the tranquility at Lake Lanier. Lake Lanier, impounded by Buford Dam, encompasses 38,000 surface acres of water with 540 miles of shorelines. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has developed and operates numerous public parks around the lake for camping and day-use activities. Lake Lanier Islands, a development by the State of Georgia and the Corps of Engineers, is the major resort area on the lake. The Islands complex provides picnicking, camping, beach areas, a water theme park, tennis courts, golf courses, rental boats, and hotel accommodations. Numerous other recreation areas operated by county and city agencies also offer recreational opportunities around the lake. Lake Lanier was host to the 1996 Centennial Olympic Rowing and Sprint/Canoe/Kayak Events, as well as the 1996 Paralympic Yachting events. These honors have helped make Lanier a world class lake.

This solarium has a wall of windows with sloped glass above, which brings in plenty of natural light, but creates too much heat and glare during the day. The homeowners wanted to reduce the heat and glare while letting light through. We installed motorized Hunter Douglas solar roller shades on the vertical windows. The solar fabric filters strong sunlight, reduces glare and UV exposure, and still allows daylight into the room. Because the shades sit directly below the sloped skylights, the placement had to be planned carefully around the transition from the vertical windows to the angled glass. Motorization also makes it easy to raise or lower several large shades at once. The result is a cleaner, more functional dining space with better control over sunlight, heat and glare. One of the wall mounted electric fireplace placements in the living room is above the couch. Fireplace hung above the couch makes a great focal point and creates a comfortable warm atmosphere in the couch area so that you and your guests would feel cozy and comfy even on colder days.

The Residence, located on a birch covered mountain in Western Maine, is a response to the natural surroundings. Utilizing a rough palette of Deer Island Granite monoliths, local black slate, Red Cedar, and Eastern White Pine, the spaces derive directly from the local geology and woods. The movement of the sun throughout the seasons and day guide the orientation of the cabin, and the intricate placement of windows on the various exterior faces. The cabin is a vessel for light, crafted of natural materials, with a bright interior volume diffusing the sun's rays throughout the space.

DESIGN CHALLENGES ADDRESSED: To anyone who may be reading this project overview, I do hope you'll have the opportunity to have a look at the 'before' photo of this space. It's quite a transformation! Our clients purchased their condo at the beach several years ago. As shown in the 'before' photo, the owner's bedroom suite was a dark and dated space with unsightly paneled walls, heavy faux ceiling beams and outdated furniture. Everything felt cramped and cluttered throughout the condo, especially their primary bedroom . The client's vision for this space was for everything to have an airy and relaxed spa like feel. DESIGN SOLUTIONS PROVIDED: The entire condo was taken down to the stud. The faux beams were edited out and the ceiling raised. The heavy out-dated paneling was removed and replaced with fresh clean walls that were painted in a calming creamy tone throughout the entire condo. The awkwardly positioned windows were removed. New windows were then added with great attention to placement. On the main wall, windows were spaced to allow a queen sized bed to nest perfectly in between them. Richly textured honeycomb cellular shades were selected with a black out liner to tame the direct sun throughout the day. The homeowners have two dogs and a cat who love a visit to the beach as much as their 'humans'. All of our updated new furniture selections successfully addressed the client's quest for a 'pet friendly' environment. The existing dark and gloomy furniture was replaced with stylish updated pieces. Great thought was given to the size, scale and textiles used in this space. A custom upholstered bed with great architectural detailing was selected. It's richly textured easy-care fabric in a soft oatmeal tone created the perfect touch.

This 1950's kitchen hindered our client's cooking and bi-weekly entertaining and was inconsistent with the home's mid-century architecture. Additional key goals were to improve function for cooking and entertaining 6 to 12 people on a regular basis. Originally with only two entry points to the kitchen (from the entry/foyer and from the dining room) the kitchen wasn’t very open to the remainder of the home, or the living room at all. The door to the carport was never used and created a conflict with seating in the breakfast area. The new plans created larger openings to both rooms, and a third entry point directly into the living room. The “peninsula” manages the sight line between the kitchen and a large, brick fireplace while still creating an “island” effect in the kitchen and allowing seating on both sides. The television was also a “must have” utilizing it to watch cooking shows while prepping food, for news while getting ready for the day, and for background when entertaining. Meticulously designed cabinets provide ample storage and ergonomically friendly appliance placement. Cabinets were previously laid out into two L-shaped spaces. On the “top” was the cooking area with a narrow pantry (read: scarce storage) and a water heater in the corner. On the “bottom” was a single 36” refrigerator/freezer, and sink. A peninsula separated the kitchen and breakfast room, truncating the entire space. We have now a clearly defined cool storage space spanning 60” width (over 150% more storage) and have separated the ovens and cooking surface to spread out prep/clean zones. True pantry storage was added, and a massive “peninsula” keeps seating for up to 6 comfortably, while still expanding the kitchen and gaining storage. The newly designed, oversized peninsula provides plentiful space for prepping and entertaining. Walnut paneling wraps the room making the kitchen a stunning showpiece.

One day I received a call from this sweet homeowner who needed help bringing in the finishing touches. They had just completed a large renovation and had just run out of steam. To boot, they were hosting a Cinco de Mayo party in 2 weeks! She saw my work at her friend’s house, and really just needed a style infusion – art, accessories, rugs and some furniture pieces to pull everything together. Janie to the rescue! We power shopped and I came back to hang the art and style everything. Now it reflects the colorful and fun loving personality of this family - needless to say, the party was a great success! I did the same thing for her chiropractic office – that was a huge success as well. Many of my clients just need the “sizzle” items to bring life and style to their interiors. This is right in my wheelhouse and it’s so rewarding to spark joy in other’s lives doing what I love!

It is such a pleasure to be able to continue the process of landscape lighting for my clients who had selected us to design and install the landscaping. The strategic placement of the landscaping elements and focal plants are awaiting the brightness of light to continue to shine all 8 seasons four season both day and night. This waterfront pool project in Beaconsfield reimagines a transitional backyard by fusing timeless warmth with crisp modern geometry. At its heart lies a custom concrete pool whose expansive beach entry pool—also known as a generous tanning ledge—slopes gently into the water, delivering the relaxed feel of a private resort. Kitchen The working side of the island contains a wine fridge; the island has a prep sink. The vaulted ceiling kitchen has clerestory windows facing east and--seen here--north, as well as the openings facing the Dining Room, at left. These serve to bring in natural light and a sense of the day outside, and their placement allows for uninterrupted wall cabinets. A wall of cabinets behind the island stores a wealth of kitchen items. Behind the doors in the center upper tier of cabinets resides a television--so that the homeowners can enjoy soccer even as they prepare meals.
