Embodying the owner’s love for modern ranch house architecture, this innovative home, designed with Feldman Architecture, sits lightly on its site and connects outwards to the Preserve’s landscape. We located the structure at the lowest point between surrounding hills so that it would be as visually inconspicuous as possible. Rammed earth walls, built using earth excavated from the site, define outdoor living spaces and serve to retain the soil along the edges of the drive and at patio spaces. Within the outdoor living spaces surrounding the buildings, native plants are combined with succulents and ornamental plants to contrast with the open grassland and provide a rich setting for entertaining, while garden areas to the south are stepped and allowed to erode on the edges, blending into the hillside. Sitting prominently adjacent to the home, three tanks capture rainwater for irrigation and are a clear indication of water available for the landscape throughout the year. LEED Platinum certification.

Back yard space for entertaining includes a gas fire-pit, infinity-edge water fountain, and curving steel and cedar pergola. Floor is paved with Cut Bluestone and features a soft green divider. Rain garden helps collect and divert water around the patio and down the slope. Ipe deck with stainless steel cable railings and wide easy-to-navigate steps provides dining space next to the kitchen and access to the patio below. Dry seating area below deck provides another intimate space. Front yard design takes advantage of mature maples, while updating plantings and adding lovely cedar and steel screens.

We converted an underused back yard into a modern outdoor living space. Functions include a cedar soaking tub, outdoor shower, fire pit, and dining area. The decking is ipe hardwood, the fence is stained cedar, and cast concrete with gravel adds texture at the fire pit. Photos copyright Laurie Black Photography.

This hidden front courtyard is nestled behind a small knoll, which protects the space from the street on one side and fosters a sense of openness on the other. The clients wanted plenty of places to sit and enjoy the landscape.

The deck includes a spacious area that provides for grilling, dining and gathering. This area then descends into a sunken deck and hardscape patio combination which is surrounded by a custom seating area.

A paver patio (Anchor Afton, walnut color) to gives the homeowners the entertainment and dining space they wanted. The blended colors of the pavers pull together the colors of the roof shingles (brown) and the New York Bluestone (blue/gray). The smaller pattern of the pavers defines the space, inviting guests to sit. Plus, the plant bed between the wall and the patio gave the homeowners a space to plant seasonal color and an edible garden.

It is an all Fiberon deck in the color Ipe. It is divided in three sections with borders to avoid seams. A border is added around the perimeter of the deck to give it a clean look without any exposed cut ends of the decking. Homeowner wanted lot of benches to sit on. One side of the deck a railing was required because it was higher than 30". We added a thick 1" squeare cedar skirting as well to give a finished look. We opted for an Azek railing with the stainless steel cable. Benches are set at a standard 20" height.

The client wanted a deck to be connected to the rest of the yard and transition to the upper deck 10ft of grade to the patio on grade. The centrally located circular kitchen area services both the patio and the upper deck and gives lots of options whether it’s just the family or a party for 50. Minimizing rails and stairs during the transition from the upper deck to the lower deck on grade was critical to the clients. Adding the kitchen to the project without obstructing the view out the rear patio doors was also an important request from the client. The WOLF PVC Black Walnut accents and fascia really sets off the Driftwood field. Dutch Quality weathered ledge stone was used in the kitchen with a granite counter. Custom welded aluminum rails and EP Henry Bristol pavers are also featured. The built in flower beds extend the feel of the patio area and allow for plantings to be added. This project turned an unusable back yard and disconnected elevated deck into cohesive multi-level living space.

Why pay for a vacation when you have a backyard that looks like this? You don't need to leave the comfort of your own home when you have a backyard like this one. The deck was beautifully designed to comfort all who visit this home. Want to stay out of the sun for a little while? No problem! Step into the covered patio to relax outdoors without having to be burdened by direct sunlight.
