Lisa brings us shots of her Pro Dunk Silver Basketball system from Longmeadow, Massachusetts. The goal stands over their home driveway, with a playing area measuring 32' by 25'. This is a Pro Dunk Silver Basketball System that was purchased in January of 2013. It was installed on a 32 ft wide by a 25 ft deep playing area in Longmeadow, MA. This garden had an historic collection of native California and Mexican fan palms, clustered around a water-needy lawn. We removed the lawn, added a new layer of drought tolerant smaller palms, and an underplanting of mediterranean type shrubs and perennials.

This compact garden was made over into a sustainable yard using drought tolerant plants, permeable paving, a dry creek bed and some cool accents. This project consisted of 2 new separate structures. The large pergola off the back of the home was designed to have a built-in gas fire pit and custom seating area as well as incorporating 2 water features. The homeowners love being able to look out to the backyard and see their new living space! The patio cover part was designed to come off the garage wall and flow seamlessly with the pergola and rest of the back yard. The patio cover has a custom outdoor kitchen that is 22 linear feet and has a large 42" RCS grill, storage drawers, fridge and vent hood with a custom vent cover. The granite is Onyx and the backsplash/wall is finished in tile with 2 window openings for ventilation. The wall of the garage was transformed into a stone wall with a full masonry gas fireplace with a walnut mantle. There is a custom storage area with a counter to match the kitchen counter. The vaulted ceiling has custom beams that are stained to contrast the painted tongue and groove ceiling. Both areas are equipped with Haiku – Big Ass Fans. Another great acreage project that was a blank slate for us to design and build to suit our client. A large concrete patio was a must and our client wanted nice curved lines to match the natural setting. To do so, however, required a very tall retaining wall that we built out of concrete using footings below frost to ensure a lifetime of worry free stability. We extended the patio out past the upper deck to a natural wood-burning fire pit area using rundle rock. A perfect tranquil setting!!

This backyard project is located in Alamo California in a Mediterranean climate. Zone 9b on the USDA Hardiness Zoning and Zone 17 on the Sunset Magazine Zoning.

I find the whole feel of this rainscape to be a textural experience with the variety of evergreens, from the softness of the conifers (spruces and pines) to the bold broad-leaved manzanitas covering the ground, to the blue oat grasses that wave in the wind and remain through the cold, often still, winter months.
