This kitchen remodel in Minneapolis neighborhood, nestled in a quiet pocket of mid-century homes near the river trails, embraces its compact footprint with smart, space-efficient design. Rather than default to an open-concept layout, the kitchen remains enclosed - enhanced by a custom operable vertical shutter that allows the kitchen to be closed off for focused cooking or opened to share light and conversation. Warm flush wood panels on the living room side blend seamlessly with the home’s original character. Reconfigured window openings with H windows establish sightlines from the front door to the backyard, framing a shared community garden beyond and a mature pine from the kitchen space. Brown ash cabinetry, neutral quartz counters, and a handmade ceramic tile backsplash nods to the home’s mid-century character balancing utility with beauty. Double-sided reeded glass uppers filter additional natural light into the kitchen while allowing tableware access from both the kitchen and dining room. New wood floors tie it all together, uniting the main level and reinforcing the feeling that this home, while modest in scale, is filled with light, warmth, and purpose.

This outdated kitchen came with flowered wallpaper, narrow connections to Entry and Dining Room, outdated cabinetry and poor workflow. By opening up the ceiling to expose existing beams, widening both entrys and adding taller, angled windows, light now steams into this bright and cheery Mid Century Modern kitchen. The custom Pratt & Larson turquoise tiles add so much interest and tie into the new custom painted blue door. The walnut wood base cabinets add a warm, natural element. A cozy seating area for TV watching, reading and coffee looks out to the new clear cedar fence and landscape.

Great room interior of a new construction single-level home. The signature butterfly shed roofline is fully expressed inside as a series of black-framed clerestory windows running the full width of the great room, admitting a continuous band of natural light and redwood canopy views above the interior wall line while maintaining privacy at eye level. Warm walnut flat-front cabinetry runs the full perimeter of the kitchen at left, with slate blue upper cabinets visible beyond and a full-height walnut appliance tower with integrated stainless steel refrigerator and double oven anchoring the center. A blue kitchen island with white quartz countertop extends into a cantilevered walnut butcher block dining table with a distinctive slatted walnut fluted base. Black molded shell chairs with oak legs surround the dining extension. Single white globe pendant hangs above. The terracotta red front entry door with cedar-clad entry volume is visible through the interior opening at center, connecting the street threshold to the deepest interior space in one axial view. Like many California ranch homes built in the 1950s, this original master bathroom was not really a "master bath." My clients, who only three years ago purchased the home from the family of the original owner, were saddled with a small, dysfunctional space. Chief among the dysfunctions: a vanity only 30" high, and an inconveniently placed window that forced the too-low vanity mirror to reflect only the waist and partial torso--not the face--of anyone standing in front of it. They wanted not only a more spacious bathroom but a bedroom as well, so we worked in tandem with an architect and contractor to come up with a fantastic new space: a true Master Suite. In order to refine a design concept for the soon-to-be larger space, and thereby narrow down material choices, my clients and I had a brainstorming session: we spoke of an elegant Old World/ European bedroom and bathroom, a luxurious bath that would reference a Roman spa, and finally the idea of a Hammam was brought into the mix. We blended these ideas together in oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, and a tiny tile mosaic in beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece. The new generously sized bathroom boasts a jetted soaking tub, a very large walk-in shower, a double-sided fireplace (facing the tub on the bath side), and a luxurious 8' long vanity with double sinks and a storage tower. The vanity wall is covered with a mosaic vine pattern in a beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece,. The custom Larson Juhl framed mirrors are flanked by gorgeous hand-wrought scones from Hubbardton Forge which echo the vine and leaf pattern in the mosaic. And the vanity itself features an LED strip in the toe-kick which allows one to see in the middle of the night without having to turn on a shockingly bright overhead fixture. At the other end of the master bath, a luxurious jetted tub nestles by a fireplace in the bay window area. Views of my clients' garden can be seen while soaking in bubbles. The over-sized walk-in shower features a paneled wainscoting effect which I designed in Crema Marfil marble. The vine mosaic continues in the shower, topped by green onyx squares. A rainshower head and a hand-held spray on a bar provides showering options. The shower floor slopes gently in one direction toward a hidden linear drain; this allows the floor to be read as a continuation of the main space, without being interrupted by a center drain. The dining area opens to the view a small deck and the pond below via a 9' wide pocked door. Both sides of the dining space can be fully opened to the site. Inspired by local fishing shacks and wharf buildings dotting the coast of Maine, this retreat interweaves large glazed openings with simple taut-skinned New England shingled cottages. This skin is incised to open views to the sea beyond and relies on light steel framing and thin braces to preserve the simple forms eroded toward sweeping views.
