A complete kitchen and powder room remodel in Herndon, Virginia, designed around two clear priorities: open up the kitchen to the rest of the main level, and create an experience that felt warm and timeless rather than trendy.
The original layout had a wall separating the kitchen from the dining room and an awkward fridge wall that limited both storage and traffic flow. Our solution involved removing the dividing wall (confirmed non-load-bearing), tightening the new dining room opening to 66 inches, and extending the fridge wall 25 inches into the kitchen to create a proper full-height pantry run. The result is a kitchen that breathes — open to the dining and living areas, with clear sight lines from the island to the bay windows at the far end.
Design Approach
The clients came in knowing they didn't want white. They didn't want navy. They wanted something with real wood character — the kind of finish that ages well and looks more like furniture than stock kitchen cabinetry. Cherry was the answer to that question.
We anchored the room around contrast: warm cherry cabinetry against clean white walls and white quartz, black hardware grounding the cherry's warmth, and a single waterfall island acting as the architectural focal point. Stainless appliances, brushed gold pendant accents, and the herringbone hardwood floor pull the room together without any one element shouting for attention.
The Cabinetry
Medallion Gold Line Sonoma Cappuccino — a stained cherry finish that catches light differently throughout the day. All-plywood box construction, solid wood doors and drawer fronts, soft close everywhere, US-made with a lifetime warranty. Four pull-out drawers built into the pantry bottoms keep the deep storage actually usable rather than a black hole.
Cabinet hardware is Top Knobs Riverside Pulls in flat black — 40 pulls across drawers and doors, plus three longer pulls on the 36-inch base drawers. The black was a deliberate decision: with cherry and stainless already providing warm and cool tones, brass or gold would have been one warm tone too many. Black grounds the cabinetry and gives the kitchen its architectural definition.
The Island and Countertops
MSI Calacatta Miraggio Gold quartz throughout — perimeter counters, island, waterfall ends, and the powder room. The Gold variant has subtle warm veining that pairs with cherry where cooler whites would have fought the wood tone.
The island gets a full waterfall edge — slabs book-matched, miters precise, the finished edge essentially seamless. Treating the island as architectural sculpture rather than just functional storage. The black undermount farmhouse-style sink ties back to the hardware throughout the rest of the kitchen.
The Backsplash
MSI Metro Gold tile — small format white and gold tiles in a herringbone-adjacent pattern with intermittent gold accents. Full height, continuous behind the floating shelves and behind the hood.
Four custom floating shelves are spaced above a 3-inch countertop ledge: first shelf 18 inches above the ledge, second shelf 9 inches above that, third 18 inches above the second. The shelves are stained to match the cabinetry. The backsplash continues behind the shelves and behind the hood, so the wall reads as a continuous textured surface that the shelves and hood float in front of.
The Appliances
This is a serious cooking kitchen. The clients chose a 48-inch Wolf gas range, a Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator integrated into the cherry cabinet wall, a Wolf microwave drawer in the island base, and a Bosch dishwasher. For ventilation, we installed a 1200 CFM hood paired with a make-up air system to balance the negative pressure that hood pulls. New ducting was routed through the exterior siding on the side of the house.
The Flooring
MSI engineered hardwood throughout the entire main level — approximately 800 square feet — installed in a Bramlett herringbone pattern. Herringbone adds roughly 15-20 percent to material and labor costs because of the angled cuts and waste factor, but the result is a floor that reads as more considered and luxurious than standard plank flooring. Finished with 4.5-inch white wood baseboards throughout.
The Powder Room
A small room with a big personality. The clients chose a deep blue and teal scallop pattern wallpaper (client-supplied, we installed) and paired it with the same Sonoma Cappuccino cherry vanity used in the kitchen — material continuity between the spaces.
Powder room countertop is the same MSI Calacatta Miraggio Gold quartz from the kitchen with a rectangular white undermount sink. Hardware on the powder room vanity is Top Knobs Riverside in honey bronze rather than the kitchen's flat black — the warm bronze pulls the brass tones from the faucet into the millwork and complements the wallpaper. New sconce, kept the existing toilet (refinishing or replacing a working toilet is wasted money in a powder room remodel), and a Panasonic Whisper Green exhaust fan.

When it came time to remodel their kitchen, a Napa couple knew exactly who to call. Having previously worked with Castle Rock Construction on a basement renovation, the homeowners chose Castle Rock.
Although it had served them well, the homeowners wanted something different for their kitchen—something that exemplified their sense of style and had an open floor plan.
Starting with a spark of an idea, they were looking for talented craftsmen to make their French Country dream kitchen a reality. That’s where the artistry and craftsmanship of Tim Metcalfe and Jay Coleman from Castle Rock’s custom cabinet shop came into the picture.
“This isn’t your basic Shopsmith kitchen,” Tim said. “With our complete cabinet shop, we were able to meet all the challenges a project like this presents.”
Tim and Jay created one-of-a-kind kitchen elements that matched pre-existing furniture pieces. The custom wood stove hood, and wood refrigerator door cover look remarkably like an armoire the homeowners already possessed.
“Legs and feet on furniture are fairly common place,” Tim said, “but we managed to round out the homeowners’ look by creating them for the island and the sink areas. We even created top rails with a radius.”
Castle Rock credits Napco Finishing for the final, installed look. In the two months it took to complete the project, the kitchen was completely renovated, a pantry was created with cupboards strategically placed to hide a pesky staircase to the basement, and a new entry staircase was constructed to take advantage of the light and lines of the existing foyer.
“Having our cabinet shop is definitely an advantage when meeting our clients’ needs. It gives our clients many more options that they are not likely to find elsewhere,” Jim Pitcher, president of Castle Rock, said. “It allows us to finish a remodel with truly unique products that simply aren’t available from big box outlets.”
The cabinet shop is just one of the many ways Castle Rock Construction delivers the highest quality of construction to discriminating homeowners. With an entire cadre of trade professionals, there’s little that can be imagined, that can’t be delivered.

The exterior features 4 different types of siding including prefinished stained siding by Woodtone, Board and Batten and Cedarmill siding by James Hardie and woodgrain siding by Cemplank. The roofing is OC Duration Designer shingles with dark bronze standing seam accents. The windows are Series 100 by Andersen and the home features an iron door.

One trend that we are seeing from our clients here at Jim Hicks Home Improvement is having the Kitchen Island cabinet a different color than the base and wall cabinets in the rest of the kitchen, it can serve to break up the monochromatic feel of the kitchen and serve as an interesting design piece!
It definitely creates interest and depth to a beautiful kitchen such as this one in Newport News! You'll also notice this kitchen has a tile floor, the wall cabinets are 42" high to the ceiling with one 30" wall cabinet being staggered in height to create interest. The corner cabinet has a glass inset in the door, creating a display place for glassware. The countertops are granite and the entire space is lit with a combination of pendent lighting, can lighting, ceiling fan/light combo and under cabinet lighting. There is a tile backsplash for the countertop and a stainless range hood for the cooktop. The kitchen island is split to allow people to sit at it on stools.

The daughter wanted to be a princess, but her mom definitely didn't want it too sweet. Maya added the cabinets and paneled the wall behind the bed with beadboard. When you have a bed against a wall in a child's room, you are going to get tons of handprints on the walls because that is where all the kids are going to hang out. Beadboard can be easily wiped down. It was also a way of adding architecture to a room that was basically a plain box. The daughter might want completely different colors when she's a teenager, but now the bones of the room are in place, so she's all set.

To work on children's rooms interior projects, we come with a special thrill and attention. The same luxury and absolute comfort, the same perfect harmony and perfection inherent in the author's projects of the studio Luxury Antonovich Design, acquire special charm and fascination in children's room interior. As here as the basis interior designers Dubai take children's dreams. And as children's imagination is boundless and limitless, so designers imagination is the same as well. This is children's rooms design, which will not be repeated, children's room interior design, which fills the journey into adulthood with special happiness.
Child's room design for a girl
Children's room interior design is divided into several areas, which depend on the age and sex of the child. Features of child psychology, which we consider in the development of children's room project are the basis of the ideal environment in which your child will be cozy and comfortable. Children's rooms design for girls is different by selection of a certain color and decoration items. Extremely popular are decorative elements such as canopies over a bed, decorative niches on the ceiling in the form of a flower or a butterfly. For teenager's room interior for girls we often choose the options that are not less luxurious by interior decoration. Indeed, in this age, the child is particularly keen to show that he is already quite adult and independent.
Children's room design for boys
Children's room interior design for a boy is always very clearly focused on the child's hobbies. The design concept is fully developed according to the dreams and interests of the child. Young adventurers enthusiastically perceive options of interior design in the nautical theme, the theme of travel or cars. The bed can be stylized as a car or a boat. Interior Designers Dubai design specifically for your son furniture in any configuration. It will be definitely comfortable and ergonomic. In teenager's room interior for boys modern style fits harmoniously, which allows you to implement the most daring design solutions.
Luxury interior design of Luxury Antonovich Design involves the creation of an ideal comfort for each family member. Children's rooms interiors of our studio fully express just how boundless love of parents is and their desire to give the child the best of everything. In our work we use only natural and environmentally friendly materials. Lighting of children’s room interior also has certain peculiarities. Every detail contributes to comfort of the child and his harmonious development.

This feature does exactly as it was intended. It does not take away from the central focal point (The large outdoor living area centered on the homes main windows), but it definitely brings a wow factor and unique approach to a water feature in a pool project. The different levels to the columns give a cool sense of dimension, and the black marble stone as the backdrop for the white marble tile on the columns help this feature stand out and catch your eye.

Outdoor furniture from Restoration Hardware really made this Houston outdoor living space design project shine.
“It really went well,” says Wayne Franks, owner of Outdoor Homescapes of Houston. “It's not a huge space, but moving the existing two columns about four feet and bringing the roof out only three feet made all the difference in the world.”
“This particular client wanted a larger space to entertain,” says senior designer Lisha Maxey, who served as an outdoor furniture consultant while managing construction for the project.
The original space, Lisha explains, had two oddly placed columns blocking a clear view of the beautiful pool area from inside the home. “We removed those columns and gave her three more feet of roof, which extended her living area while also giving her the view she wanted.”
Since the client - a woman in her mid-50s with grown children who visit frequently - only wanted a small outdoor kitchen island with a 30-inch RCS grill Outdoor Homescapes closed up a French door that led from the master bedroom (which she never used) and created a new stucco wall for the kitchen.
“I would definitely call the style of this space ‘transitional,” says Lisha. The client is a very eclectic world traveler and a collector of art, yet wanted her outdoor living space to feel like a warm, homey living room once we placed the furniture and décor. In the end, her finishes centered around rustic stone, detailed columns and furniture leaning towards the contemporary.”
Much of the warmth in the space, she says, comes from the colors of the dry-stacked Sunset Canyon ledgestone. “It looks just like it sounds – like the sun setting in a deep canyon!”
“The columns are unique – decorative and fluted,” adds Wayne.
The client, who’d received five free hours of outdoor furniture consultation as part of an ongoing promotion, also wanted Lisha to help her select, buy and help place furnishings.
“I believe that now - more than ever - consumers are looking for turn-key operations in any type of service industry - a ‘one-stop-shop,’ so to speak,” says Lisha. “It gives us a more personal touch with the client, as well as an edge in the industry in terms of selling our designs, as the client is reassured that we’ll work with them in every aspect to give them the outdoor living space of their dreams.”
The client ended up choosing the Biscayne collection – including a chair that rocks and swivels - from Restoration Hardware. They also went with a lower, unique teak coffee table from the Belvedere collection.
“We mixed wicker with teak for an equally soft and hard look and added pops of color to bring out the beautiful art collection inside,” says Lisha. “The neutral gray wicker, by the way, was the perfect match for the distressed teak coffee table and credenza. The grays of the Key West granite countertop also echoed this color palette.”
For the fabric, Lisha helped keep it neutral with a Mocha linen and popped the color with royal blue throw pillows matching the area rug: “To make the space truly her own, we added some unique copper pots from her collection and a few items she's collected abroad.”

The existing kitchen was closed off, which necessitated several space-related compromises that affected many aspects of daily life.
Design Objectives:
• Open the tiny kitchen to living space
• Maintain the dining area
• Create a family room/TV space
• Increase kitchen storage and work surface
• Improve lighting
• Upgrade appliances to ‘chef grade’
Biggest Design Challenge:
• Our main challenge was to add a family room/TV area while maintaining a dining space. Prior to the remodel, the homeowners were using a TV room on their third floor, which was less than ideal.
Taking down the kitchen wall and opening up the area to the adjacent living space made a big difference. The repurposed former dining room works well as a TV space. The former breakfast nook was updated with a new table that allows for casual dining on a daily basis, but is expandable for parties and holidays. Kitchen storage was expanded with island and ceiling-height cabinetry. Kitchen island seating and the open floor plan have definitely changed the quality of day-to-day life – the cook no longer feels isolated and now enjoys preparing meals while spending time with friends.

Designed and built by My Kitchen and Bath out of our Herndon showroom at 285 Sunset Park Drive. We've been designing and building kitchens, bathrooms, and full home renovations across Northern Virginia and the DMV since 1994.
