Below Buchanan is a basement renovation that feels as light and welcoming as one of our outdoor living spaces. The project is full of unique details, custom woodworking, built-in storage, and gorgeous fixtures. Custom carpentry is everywhere, from the built-in storage cabinets and molding to the private booth, the bar cabinetry, and the fireplace lounge.
Creating this bright, airy atmosphere was no small challenge, considering the lack of natural light and spatial restrictions. A color pallet of white opened up the space with wood, leather, and brass accents bringing warmth and balance. The finished basement features three primary spaces: the bar and lounge, a home gym, and a bathroom, as well as additional storage space. As seen in the before image, a double row of support pillars runs through the center of the space dictating the long, narrow design of the bar and lounge. Building a custom dining area with booth seating was a clever way to save space. The booth is built into the dividing wall, nestled between the support beams. The same is true for the built-in storage cabinet. It utilizes a space between the support pillars that would otherwise have been wasted.
The small details are as significant as the larger ones in this design. The built-in storage and bar cabinetry are all finished with brass handle pulls, to match the light fixtures, faucets, and bar shelving. White marble counters for the bar, bathroom, and dining table bring a hint of Hollywood glamour. White brick appears in the fireplace and back bar. To keep the space feeling as lofty as possible, the exposed ceilings are painted black with segments of drop ceilings accented by a wide wood molding, a nod to the appearance of exposed beams. Every detail is thoughtfully chosen right down from the cable railing on the staircase to the wood paneling behind the booth, and wrapping the bar.

The existing kitchen was closed off, which necessitated several space-related compromises that affected many aspects of daily life.
Design Objectives:
• Open the tiny kitchen to living space
• Maintain the dining area
• Create a family room/TV space
• Increase kitchen storage and work surface
• Improve lighting
• Upgrade appliances to ‘chef grade’
Biggest Design Challenge:
• Our main challenge was to add a family room/TV area while maintaining a dining space. Prior to the remodel, the homeowners were using a TV room on their third floor, which was less than ideal.
Taking down the kitchen wall and opening up the area to the adjacent living space made a big difference. The repurposed former dining room works well as a TV space. The former breakfast nook was updated with a new table that allows for casual dining on a daily basis, but is expandable for parties and holidays. Kitchen storage was expanded with island and ceiling-height cabinetry. Kitchen island seating and the open floor plan have definitely changed the quality of day-to-day life – the cook no longer feels isolated and now enjoys preparing meals while spending time with friends.

Our clients came to us wanting to maximize the space they had. They were not planning on moving anytime soon, as they loved their neighborhood. They wanted to renovate the front of their house, which included the front atrium, living room, kitchen, and powder bath. They hated their kitchen because it was completely closed off, had low ceilings, was dark and outdated, not to mention the floors were different in each of these rooms! The pantry was in the breakfast area and the kitchen table became a junk catcher, being the first thing you see when coming in from the garage/laundry room. In their living room, they wanted the spaces on either side of the fireplace to be symmetrical, whether that be bookshelves, a wet bar or closed off. Both parents are working professionals with no time and/or desire to design, create and figure this out on their own. They needed help figuring out how to reconfigure their current space in order to maximize what they already had, as they could not see an obvious solution. They could not envision how it would look so the fact that our designers were able to show them their new kitchen in 3D was pertinent.
We removed the pass-through windows that surrounded the atrium and front dining room, as well as the entire kitchen wall, completely opening up those two rooms. We removed a hall that used to lead between the kitchen and the living room since it was a complete waste of space! The ceilings were raised to 10’ in the kitchen and we were able to leave the skylight, letting in that natural light they wanted. We were able to give them a much larger pantry with tons of shelving and increase the size of their laundry room by utilizing the space of their old breakfast nook.
We relocated the door to the garage into their new elongated laundry room, built a wet bar across from their new larger pantry (with a pocket door) and the flow and functionality of these new spaces is just perfect! All new Waypoint cabinets were installed one two main kitchen surrounding walls painted Linen. Calacatta Bianco Polished Porcelain Tile 4x12 was used for the backsplash. A large eat-at island was installed, painted Stone, where the family can now gather for homework, meals, and mingling. The soft champagne bronze hardware and accent lighting really give this white and gray kitchen a soft classic look.
In the living room, we removed the built-in bookshelves to the left of the fireplace and closed off the wet-bar on the other side, giving them more space in their master suite. White Oak wood flooring, stained Putney, was installed throughout the entire new space, giving it the continuity they were looking for.
In the guest bathroom, Carrara white herringbone marble mosaic 12x12 tile was used on the shower floor and niche, while basic marble Bianco polished 12x24 porcelain tile was used on the walls. Luxart polished chrome traditional hardware gives this timeless bathroom the perfect shine.
Our clients are so happy with the new functionality and look of their space. It has definitely changed their lives in a way they could have never imagined!

We were able to work with this client to take her basic builder grade kitchen and turn it into a custom gourmet kitchen. We removed the corner pantry closet and built 2 custom pantry cabinets on either side of the refrigerator. We painted the island a different color to make it pop against the white cabinets. Definitely a major transformation.

The Framework Polished Marble Mesh-Mounted Mosaic Wall Tile has a soft white color with gray veining and a smooth, polished finish. The 2 in. x 4 in. brick pieces are fashioned with beveled edges on 12 in. x 13.19 in. mesh sheet to add definition to any residential or commercial expanse, certain to infuse your space with visual allure. Boasting random tone variations for extra character, they look particularly stunning as kitchen backsplash or tub/shower surround and also perform splendidly as an accent panel or countertop surface. Note: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer.

This designer client relationship is one based on friendship. Senior Designer Cori Dyer and client have an indescribable partnership and unmentioned understanding when it comes to decorating this home. A vintage charmer with a modern flair, filled with collectables and uncommon goods that make this space a unique and spectacular.
Cori Dyer:
I first met Sally when our boys became friends at Chaminade in 2007.
Since then, we have stayed close and become great friends.
Several years back she asked for my help giving her ideas on ways to spruce things up a bit and work with her on a major remodel.
A little intimidating as Sally has a beautiful home and is an avid collector of vintage finds.... way before the trend of blending old and new was popular.
She has an eye for unique ways to use vintage pieces and incorporating those into some of the most interesting and compelling displays. What has made this design relationship work is simply one of respect. I know when to give her that push outside of her comfort zone and incorporate her collections with selections that work with what she has, but that offer a new spin on putting it all together.
From that initial "spruce up" has come a makeover in her Living Room and currently one completed in her Family Room.
Although there are signs of my design throughout her home, the detail and selection of the collections and vintage finds are all Sally!!
I truly think that is how Design should be. Blending old and new, and a Designer listening to what makes the client happy.
Client: It was fun to be in style for a year or two, but it’s back to being the quirky lady. I started collecting in my teens and enjoy the hunt for new finds of all types. Cori helped me to enjoy my collections in a new and modern way! As always I had too many things. With her designer eye she taught me to blend the old and the new and to use different materials. The best part was going shopping with one of my best friends, who just happens to be a designer!! She is definitely the ying to my much needed yang.

Landscape Contractor Values:
Any given Landscape Contractor may have a different approach, but Landscape Contractor, Brett Berry of Berry Outdoor Living creates living areas that feel connected to the home. As a Landscape Designer and Landscape Contractor working with a Landscape Architect, we try to create the space so it feels relaxed. It should feel like it's been in place with the home for years and not an "add-on".
As a Landscape Contractor that merges old and new construction into the landscape design, the goal is to build a space people want to spend time, whether at the bar of the outdoor kitchen, fire pit, patio, or covered porch. When a space becomes a large part of the homeowners' daily life, as a Landscape Contractor, that's when I know a project has been completed with excellence. I work closely with a Landscape Architect through the design process to ensure the space has the correct "feel".
A Landscape Contractor must build the space to flow from the inside of the home out. The patio and outdoor living space feels like an extension of the home, or another "room" of the home and feels wrapped with fresh, low-maintenance landscaping.
In Kansas City patio, and landscaping design, there is a clear trend toward a cleaner, more defined look influenced by a more modern era viewpoint that values a non-cluttered look and feel. So, as a Landscape Contractor, in our circle of clients, we've seen a definite shift toward cleaner, artisan-crafted backyards and fewer "boxy", shrub-heavy yards. A Landscape Contractor with a keen sense designs this effect.

A complete kitchen and powder room remodel in Herndon, Virginia, designed around two clear priorities: open up the kitchen to the rest of the main level, and create an experience that felt warm and timeless rather than trendy.
The original layout had a wall separating the kitchen from the dining room and an awkward fridge wall that limited both storage and traffic flow. Our solution involved removing the dividing wall (confirmed non-load-bearing), tightening the new dining room opening to 66 inches, and extending the fridge wall 25 inches into the kitchen to create a proper full-height pantry run. The result is a kitchen that breathes — open to the dining and living areas, with clear sight lines from the island to the bay windows at the far end.
Design Approach
The clients came in knowing they didn't want white. They didn't want navy. They wanted something with real wood character — the kind of finish that ages well and looks more like furniture than stock kitchen cabinetry. Cherry was the answer to that question.
We anchored the room around contrast: warm cherry cabinetry against clean white walls and white quartz, black hardware grounding the cherry's warmth, and a single waterfall island acting as the architectural focal point. Stainless appliances, brushed gold pendant accents, and the herringbone hardwood floor pull the room together without any one element shouting for attention.
The Cabinetry
Medallion Gold Line Sonoma Cappuccino — a stained cherry finish that catches light differently throughout the day. All-plywood box construction, solid wood doors and drawer fronts, soft close everywhere, US-made with a lifetime warranty. Four pull-out drawers built into the pantry bottoms keep the deep storage actually usable rather than a black hole.
Cabinet hardware is Top Knobs Riverside Pulls in flat black — 40 pulls across drawers and doors, plus three longer pulls on the 36-inch base drawers. The black was a deliberate decision: with cherry and stainless already providing warm and cool tones, brass or gold would have been one warm tone too many. Black grounds the cabinetry and gives the kitchen its architectural definition.
The Island and Countertops
MSI Calacatta Miraggio Gold quartz throughout — perimeter counters, island, waterfall ends, and the powder room. The Gold variant has subtle warm veining that pairs with cherry where cooler whites would have fought the wood tone.
The island gets a full waterfall edge — slabs book-matched, miters precise, the finished edge essentially seamless. Treating the island as architectural sculpture rather than just functional storage. The black undermount farmhouse-style sink ties back to the hardware throughout the rest of the kitchen.
The Backsplash
MSI Metro Gold tile — small format white and gold tiles in a herringbone-adjacent pattern with intermittent gold accents. Full height, continuous behind the floating shelves and behind the hood.
Four custom floating shelves are spaced above a 3-inch countertop ledge: first shelf 18 inches above the ledge, second shelf 9 inches above that, third 18 inches above the second. The shelves are stained to match the cabinetry. The backsplash continues behind the shelves and behind the hood, so the wall reads as a continuous textured surface that the shelves and hood float in front of.
The Appliances
This is a serious cooking kitchen. The clients chose a 48-inch Wolf gas range, a Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator integrated into the cherry cabinet wall, a Wolf microwave drawer in the island base, and a Bosch dishwasher. For ventilation, we installed a 1200 CFM hood paired with a make-up air system to balance the negative pressure that hood pulls. New ducting was routed through the exterior siding on the side of the house.
The Flooring
MSI engineered hardwood throughout the entire main level — approximately 800 square feet — installed in a Bramlett herringbone pattern. Herringbone adds roughly 15-20 percent to material and labor costs because of the angled cuts and waste factor, but the result is a floor that reads as more considered and luxurious than standard plank flooring. Finished with 4.5-inch white wood baseboards throughout.
The Powder Room
A small room with a big personality. The clients chose a deep blue and teal scallop pattern wallpaper (client-supplied, we installed) and paired it with the same Sonoma Cappuccino cherry vanity used in the kitchen — material continuity between the spaces.
Powder room countertop is the same MSI Calacatta Miraggio Gold quartz from the kitchen with a rectangular white undermount sink. Hardware on the powder room vanity is Top Knobs Riverside in honey bronze rather than the kitchen's flat black — the warm bronze pulls the brass tones from the faucet into the millwork and complements the wallpaper. New sconce, kept the existing toilet (refinishing or replacing a working toilet is wasted money in a powder room remodel), and a Panasonic Whisper Green exhaust fan.

Designed and built by My Kitchen and Bath out of our Herndon showroom at 285 Sunset Park Drive. We've been designing and building kitchens, bathrooms, and full home renovations across Northern Virginia and the DMV since 1994.

Our clients came to us wanting to update their Heather Ridge Estates 2006 Frisco home. They had lived in the home for over 10 years and were ready for a change but didn’t want to move. They lived directly across from Cottonwood Park, so they definitely weren’t going to find that view anywhere else! They wanted to lighten up the kitchen without removing or painting the beautiful dark wood cabinets and they wanted to update two bathrooms. In the master bathroom, they wanted to keep the cabinets but paint them but wanted to gut and replace everything else. They wanted to do the same in the guest bath, which was very traditional. They wanted something more modern with clean lines.
In the kitchen, we installed sleek Silestone Calacatta Gold Quartz- polished countertops with a timeless Emser Motif in Lace White 4x12 backsplash. Class stainless Moen Arbor MotionSense Wave High Arc Kitchen Faucet was installed above their Blanco Silgranit double bowl undermount sink. The existing floors remained as is and they kept their existing pendant lights that hung over the kitchen peninsula but it all looks different now. Before, this kitchen was much darker, but now, it is classic and timeless.
In the master bathroom, the cabinets were painted Sherwin Williams Elephant Ear and topped them with polished Silestone Calacatta Gold Quartz. Greyson vanity lights in polished chrome were installed above each his and hers sinks. Two Kohler Caxton Oval 17x14 under-mount bathroom sinks were installed with polished chrome Kohler Archer sink faucet. The shower was completely gutted and redone. The shower floor is a cool Bedrosians Hemisphere Floor & Wall Mosaic in Balboa tile. Shower sidewalls, as well as the main floor tile, is Purestone 12x24 tile in Bianco Matte Finish. Kohler Artifacts Showerhead with Katalyst Spray in Polished Chrome was installed, as well as a shower arm. Kohler Archer Deck-mount bath faucet in polished chrome was installed. The tub deck was changed to the Purestone 12x24 tile in Bianco with a Matte Finish. Purestone 12x24 tile in Bianco Muretto Textured Finish was used for the Tub/Shower Accent Back Wall.
In their guest bath, everything except the bathtub was replaced. We started with a Shaker style Chiffon painted finish single vanity by Quality Cabinets, topped with polished Silestone Calacatta Gold Quartz. Our clients chose a Kohler Caxton Oval 17x14 under-mount bathroom sink and Kohler Archer Sink Faucet keeping consistency throughout their house. Kohler Archer hardware was also used in the bathtub/shower combo. An Ashton 3 Light 23" wide vanity light with clear glass shades in polished chrome was installed above the 25.6” Travis Round Wood Accent Mirror to finish it off. This bathroom is completely renewed and classic, as is the master bathroom and their kitchen!

Projects like this are rare for us to do so it's fun to show off some different skills our team offers.
Some background on this project, one of our employees was in a house fire and damaged most of his house, PDQ put in some hard work and started from basically scratch.
This is still a work in progress, we have lots of work inside and still some outside work needed to be done, but this house will be a neat project to keep up with, so definitely keep an eye out for this one!
Thank you very much Dovetail Roofing for allowing us to use the photos in the middle, and also thank you for the amazing roof that this family can rely on!

This basement will take your breath away with all the different textures, colors, gadgets, and custom features it houses. Designed as part man cave, part entertainment room, this space was designed to be functional and aesthetically impressive.
Photographer: Southern Love Studio

In the powder bath here the clients wanted something different and unique. They definitely have a more clean and sleek style, so we thought it would be fun to do a floating vanity in here. With the little niche cubby, it was created by reworking the hall closet that is now an open shelving niche, making the powder bathroom larger and we were left with this space and kept it. We carried the counter into it, and added floating shelves with lighting to display accessories.

An exquisite example of timeless elegance given by the combination of 3 different types of travertine.
This master bathroom combines functionality and beauty transitioning from traditional materials such as scabos, maple and classic travertine to contemporary elements such as the glass doors and the stainless steel shower tower.
The roman pattern of the main floor leads the way to a warm and colorful pallet of red tones that continues on the vessel sinks and in the mosaic of the back splashes.
The maple travertine planks create a comforting shower area accented only by the 4x4 scabos on the shower floor.
The twin frosted glass doors infuse the space with a fresh contemporary twist making this bathroom the definition of a transitional interior.
The hidden storage space on the custom built wood columns is priceless and the white choice of stain enhances the Jacuzzi bath tub and the Palladian window trim.
From all angles the simplicity and richness of this bathroom is unique and truly creates an amazing relaxing space.
