Colleen F. Colleen and Don F. of Palm Desert, California are thinking about doing another mural in their home as the first one turned out so well. While chatting about their future needs with us, Colleen asked if we had displayed the photos she sent of their first installation. Shame on us -- we hadn't. And they're FABULOUS. Not just the mural, mind you... but look at the whole room. We're not sure if Colleen had help or not, but this is definitely one professionally designed room. Many thanks to them for letting us be part of it. BTW -- Colleen and Don had originally been thinking about putting up a desert scene. As they live in the desert, I guess they eventually decided upon a beautifully cooling water scene. The mural they chose is actually a photo of Monet's Gardens in France, where he did much of his most famous work (including his Water Lilies collection). In this mural, from a photograph by the National Geographic, you can see exactly where Monet derived his inspiration. Many, many thanks to you, Colleen, for sharing your fantastic room with us. And for making it a bit of a "how-to." As you can see, Colleen shows the stages of installation from just the mural, to custom built shelves on the sides, to completed. Take a look at the image of the living/dining space with doors opening to a pool beyond. This is an elegant, finely-appointed room with aged, hand-hewn beams, dormered clerestory windows, and radiant-heated limestone floors. But the real power of the space derives less from these handsome details and more from the wide opening centered on the pool. The occupants of the room feel like they’re poolside, even while inside. When they’re entertaining, it matters little whether guests are on the terrace or in the living room; it all feels like one great space. The four-wide bank of doors is designed so that the central two are hinged directly to the flanking ones. Thus, when opened, they are precisely aligned, it seems as if there are somehow only two doors, and the assembly appears less cluttered. A mechanized, roll-down screen descends from above to completely secure the opening against insects. When the screen is in use, the doors at the far ends are used for passage (a word of advice: make sure to devise a screening solution in any multi-door design). Two images from a seasonal lakefront cottage in East Haddam combine to make an even bolder statement. This three-story building has a master suite occupying the entire third floor.

This airy living room was conceived around the homeowners love of art and nature. A palette derived from sea and sand, natural elements were brought in both literally and figuratively. Warm wood and earthen accents are countered by sleek, modern accent chairs. The embroidered linen draperies draw the eye up and serve as a dramatic backdrop to the serene conversation area. Oversized mirrors transfer the ambient light throughout the room. The centerpiece of the room is a silk and copper aerial sculpture by artist Jan R. Carson (www.janrcarson.com) that is accented by a halogen spotlight. The lighting casts an ever-changing shadow, creating life and whimsy to the room. The homeowners have even been known to move the furniture back, spotlight the mobile, and use the room as a salsa dance floor! A reclaimed hand-carved door was repurposed as a coffee table. Each drop is hand-blown by artisans and intricately engineered to house the lighting strategy for the chandelier. When you see a light sculpture designed to increase the visual appeal of a room and define its luminous character, you stop on your way to admire it. It’s the case of the Raindrop chandelier known as “The Pour”, a modern light sculpture meant to illuminate and beautify its chosen location to create an architectural relationship with space. The drop itself is constructed of two parts: the brass screw cap, which houses the light, and the hand-blown crystal reflecting the light to create puddles on the floor below. To replicate the nature of raindrops, no two drops are blown identical. The name “The Pour” derives from the distinctive shape that the chandelier forms: an exaggeration of the dramatic motion of water pouring out of a carafe. Designed by forming a grid mimicking how puddles ripple outward in concentric circles, each teardrop is hung to brass pipes of varying lengths. Placed strategically on the grid, the teardrops lock into the mirrored base that fits seamlessly between the two existing columns. The mirrored base reflects the teardrops endlessly into the sky above and when lit. The chandelier echoes rain frozen in time with ephemeral puddles overlaid on the floor below. The home is enclosed with rammed-earth exterior walls built up along the undulating contours formed by the ribbon, while interior walls are erected around selected voids defined by some of the loops. A faceted tent-like Cor-Ten steel roof—out of which the shape of the floor plan is cut out and replaced with glass—tops the structure. MALIBU RESTAURANT The stacked volumes of 22716 Pacific Coast Highway, recall Rudolph Schindler’s beach side Lovell house with its clean modern lines, generous overhangs and framed views of the Santa Monica bay and the Malibu pier. In a palette rich with teak timbers, meticulous wood detailing and rugged stone accents, this restaurant offers secluded moments in intimately-sized spaces as well as expansive areas for dining and event gatherings, each with their own breezy vistas. Away from the hum of the Pacific Coast Highway, the low-lying forms and earthy materials were derived from the site’s exquisite natural setting on Carbon Beach in Malibu. Passing through a tall stone wall one is escorted from the hectic PCH to the tranquil interiors filled with luxurious natural woods and stones, accented with bronze and glass. The expansive south facing glass facade then encourages the visitor to take in the panoramic views of the sea. Deep overhangs ensure that those seeking protection can be shielded from the rays, but sun-hungry guests can also chose an outdoor deck area with cozy spots between the canopy trees that recall the fashionably intimate beaches of Saint Tropez.

The Craftsman's style inspiration derived from the Gamble House. The fireplace wall was decreased in size for an open-concept spacious grand room. The custom stained cabinetry graciously flows from the kitchen, laundry room, hall, and primary bathroom. Two new hutches were added to the dining room area for extra storage. The sizeable wet island serves as an entertaining hub. We spared no unused space to accommodate the families' needs. Two-tone quartz countertops provide a transitional design. The quartz white countertops serve as a grout-free backsplash.

Duo contrasting cabinets perfectly designed and laid out for this log cabin kitchen remodel. Choosing natural wood cabinets for the island with contrasting stark white cabinets for the perimeter of the kitchen is stunning! First, client came to showroom looking to make their kitchen more function. Being a log cabin and prior remodels made this a bit tricky from the previous owners. Next, we began working around support beams with the client. However, a solution from owner was derived to make the space more functional by bringing the wall out further. This allotted more space for the wall cabinets and made the space more appealing. Cabinet selection and designing was next in process. Island selection is natural hickory cabinets with a liquid toffee glaze. Which added richness to the island bringing warmth into the kitchen. Tying in the woods from the ceiling and various walls. Additionally, the painted alder cabinets with a glaze along the perimeter brighten up the cozy kitchen. Finally, adding beautiful desert beach granite countertops tops off the project. This kitchen will be enjoyable for years to come.

Inspiration for this bathroom remodel was derived from the captivating beauty of the ocean. The crisp white finishes and sleek design mark this remodel at the top of our list!

Photography Robin Hill & Chance Stillman The renovation of this contemporary residence and garden is deeply inspired by its subtropical context, utilizing horizontal lines to ground the home and connect its occupants to nature. When considering how to make the most impactful intervention, the design team focused mainly on horizontal roof planes, subtropical landscaping and an abundance of clerestory windows that would all contribute to the home’s integration with its site. In contrast to the tropes of a Palm Beach traditional vernacular, this home seeks to re-establish itself within nature as a place for a young family. Architectural strategies included dematerializing the surrounding walls and expanding the roof eaves to connect the interior spaces with the surrounding gardens of the home. The site plan is organized around four main pavilions: A bedroom pavilion to the south, a cabana pavilion to the west, a garage pavilion to the north, and a central living pavilion. Each of the three pavilions engage with the central living space while still allowing nature to flow between them. The pavilions are organized around the pool deck, equipped with zero-edge detailing and layered subtropical landscaping. In this way the swimming pool doubles as a recreational component to the program but also as a mirror to expand views and reflect the surrounding landscape. A glass bridge serves as the garden threshold between the garage and the home. The renovated home and garden departs from its former Bahamian style and stands out within the community as a symbol for the future of architecture and landscape architecture within this quiet, ocean-front community. Daily maintenance of Micro Crystal Stone 1.The laying area of micro crystal stone can only be opened for use or stacking any item on top after at least 24 hours of filling the gap, 2.The ground must be covered with plywood or carpet for protection in case of doing other decoration work after the installation of micro crystal stone floor, 3.In areas like exit and entrance, the surface of micro crystal stone floor should be covered by carpet or plywood to protect it from the damage of abrasion of sand or other hard material. 4.Do not use general floor wax on micro crystal stone,General floor wax is an oil-based wax which is easily stuck to dust. 5.Please use rubber wheels for shopping cart and trolley on micro crystal stone floor, for the hard wheel may scratch and damage the surface, 6.Regular care and maintenance is the key for long lasting of micro crystal stone’s high glossy and reflection. Important Notice 1.Make sure the ground of laying area is dry and clean before laying mortar. It recycles steel salvaged from the 2015 demolition of the namesake Garrison bridge near Toronto’s Fort York. True to STACKLAB’s ethos, however, the Garrison’s shape is not intended to be a formal representation or memorialization of any of the bridge’s attributes. Instead, the Garrison exemplifies STACKLAB’s mission to emphasize that all material matters. Discarded or waste materials are repurposed in a way that imbues them with new life and meaning. Its form was derived using digital real-time parametric design and fabrication technology. STACKLAB optimized the product to be as light and strong as possible: the Garrison’s 35-lb. weight can support a load of 900 lbs. STACKLAB and its partnering firm Rebart procured two tons of bridge rebar, enough to release a limited-edition run of 102 units. STACKLAB designed the Garrison to be sand-cast and engineered the pattern (used to generate sand moulds) so that small manufacturing defects, typical of this process, would only appear at the tip of the piece. Units 1 to 51 have a thermally applied 1/16” solid bronze coating in this location, which ameliorates these defects. This coating turns units that may have been discarded into premium ones, enabling a near-100-percent yield out of the run. The sand-casting process produces faintly perceptible irregularities that enhance the Garrison’s tactility. Garrison 1-51 is available exclusively at Maison Gerard. A redesign project although challenging, when looked at with a keen eye, provides opportunities which can be developed into key design elements.This project was entirely driven by this belief of doing well within given constraints & creating an ambience which speaks of sophistication & rich user experience. Project motive was to upgrade & subsequently up sell an already existing saloon in Al Ain, UAE; into a wellness center which caters to saloon services as well as massage facilities. The existing unit was compartmentalised & the walls prevented light from travelling to all areas of the space. .Some walls were demolished to create an open, well lit & free flowing space . Thus originated a module which could be scaled,repeated & used as a derivative rendering interesting identity to the space.
