Clawson Architects, LLCThe term “forever home” is often used to describe a house that portends to meet all of one’s current and future needs. Attaining such a residence often entails moving from one’s current home, leaving behind years of memories. We had the satisfaction of collaborating with a client to make their existing home into their forever home with smart adaptations that will allow them to age in place…in the house and neighborhood they love.
The site is challenging in that the front of the home is perched atop a steep incline, and the home is primarily entered via a more accessible alley in the back. Thus, the home has two “fronts.” The existing low-slung ranch/bungalow had suited this couple for many years. However, newly retired with more free time, the couple sought to create a more gracious home to enjoy entertaining indoors and out, hosting guests for extended stays, and exploring their artistic sides in a proper studio space. A successful project would be a home filled with natural light that allowed them to age in place. A “happy house.”
Inspiration for the design was found in the owners’ love of 1920s Arts & Crafts bungalows and bright colors. The existing home provided design cues, such as a porch with stucco columns and shallow arches that had been concealed by a previous renovation. Building upon that, we proposed to reconfigure the roof into a cross-gable to maximize interior space on the second floor while increasing the home’s contextuality with neighboring ones. A new primary bedroom suite with bathroom, his and hers closets, and a dressing room for the lady of the house were created. To maximizing versatility, the dressing room can also be utilized as a guest room. The balance of the second floor includes a hall bathroom and large office, gallery walls to display artwork, storage areas, and even some private meditation spaces with doors hidden behind bookcases.
A first-floor addition expanded the casual dining room into the rear garden and created a new art studio. To imbue the middle of the house with light, skylights were introduced over the existing stair; new screened stairwells, inspired by the work of Louis Sullivan, filter the natural light.
Acknowledging practical issues of aging in place, all openings were designed to allow easy passage by a wheelchair, and bathroom accommodations include grab bars and roll-in showers. Additionally, a small first floor bathroom was expanded and, along with an adjacent bedroom, will allow for single floor living if necessary.
Exterior detailing was again influenced by the Arts & Crafts tradition: deep overhangs, brackets, and tapered columns. New cedar shingles were installed, the original porch restored, and the low arch motif was re-introduced into the design. A new garden of native plantings with an outdoor room anchors the house in the landscape.
While one never truly know what the future holds, creating their “forever home” gives the inhabitants peace of mind that they can live in this place that brings them joy and gives them comfort now and, in the days, to come.

The wife described her style as "beachy buddha" and the husband loved industrial pieces. We married the two styles together and used wood accents and texture to tie them seamlessly. You'll notice the living room features an amazing view of the water and this design concept plays perfectly into that zen vibe. We removed the tile and replaced it with beautiful hardwood floors to balance the rooms and avoid distraction. The owners of this home love Cuban art and funky pieces, so we constructed these built-ins to showcase their amazing collection.

This Chantilly family, desired a colorful update to their outdated home which included wood type cabinetry and white walls.
Our expert team redesigned their entire living, dining and kitchen spaces using a masterful combination of dark hardwood flooring, gray walls, marble style counter and island tops, and dark blue and white cabinetry throughout kitchen/living spaces.
The kitchen/dining area is complete with pendant lighting, stainless steel appliances, and glass cabinet doors.
The master bathroom was also completely redesigned to match the design of the living and kitchen spaces. Complete with new freestanding tub, open shower, and new double vanity.

Sustainable Design GroupThis beautiful secluded house and art studio, hand built by a Japanese Potter, has been given a new life as a writing studio for its owner. The building, having been neglected and uninhabited for some time, was in danger of being demolished. The owner’s recognition of the underlying spirit of the place, in what can only be described as a labor of love, worked with the designers and the artisans to bring this building back to life. The stone cylinder at the center of the building houses bathrooms and mechanical systems, allowing the remainder of the building to remain open. The new cedar posts, stair, custom cabinets and handcrafted sliding doors are among the details that were chosen to complement the restoration of the underlying building, ensuring a long life for this peaceful retreat.
Bolshakova StudioIn the kitchen space, we worked with low ceilings, and thanks to verticals, light tones, and carefully considered furniture management, we managed to create a feeling of space. The presence of contrasting accents makes the light interior more expressive, and the furniture from Poliform could be described as multifunctional. From the dining zone, an entrance leads to a terrace, from where one can admire the sea and swim in the swimming pool.
Red House RemodelingHaving lived in their new home for several years, these homeowners were ready to finish their basement and transform it into a multi-purpose space where they could mix and mingle with family and friends. Inspired by clean lines and neutral tones, the style can be described as well-dressed rustic. Despite being a lower level, the space is flooded with natural light, adding to its appeal.
Central to the space is this amazing bar. To the left of the bar is the theater area, the other end is home to the game area.

Cummings Architecture + InteriorsSituated along Eagle River, looking across to the mouth of the Ipswich Harbor, this was clearly a little cape house that was married to the sea. The owners were inquiring about adding a simple shed dormer to provide additional exposure to the stunning water view, but they were also interested in what Mathew would design if this beach cottage were his.
Inspired by the waves that came ashore mere feet from the little house, Mathew took up a fat marker and sketched a sweeping, S-shape dormer on the waterside of the building. He then described how the dormer would be designed in the shape of an ocean wave. “This way,” he explained, “you will not only be able to see the ocean from your new master bedroom, you’ll also be able to experience that view from a space that actually reflects the spirit of the waves.”
Mathew and his team designed the master suite and study using a subtle combination of contemporary and traditional, beach-house elements. The result was a completely unique and one-of-a-kind space inside and out. Transparencies are built into the design via features like gently curved glass that reflects the water and the arched interior window separating the bedroom and bath. On the exterior, the curved dormer on the street side echoes these rounded shapes and lines to create continuity throughout. The sense of movement is accentuated by the continuous, V-groove boarded ceiling that runs from one ocean-shaped dormer through to the opposite side of the house.
The bedroom features a cozy sitting area with built in storage and a porthole window to look out onto the rowboats in the harbor. A bathroom and closet were combined into a single room in a modern design that doesn't sacrifice any style or space and provides highly efficient functionality. A striking barn door made of glass with industrial hardware divides the two zones of the master suite. The custom, built-in maple cabinetry of the closets provides a textural counterpoint to the unique glass shower that incorporates sea stones and an ocean wave motif accent tile.
With this spectacular design vision, the owners are now able to enjoy their stunning view from a bright and spacious interior that brings the natural elements of the beach into the home.

Signature Designs Kitchen | Bath | InteriorsThe dream is couple had was to remove the wall between the living room and the kitchen. This extensive remodel to this couple's upscale home in Carlsbad. We are always in favor in going beyond the basic shaker style cabinetry.
We used Bellmont cabinetry lineage cabinetry door style, an upscale shaker is how we describe it to our client. We used quartz countertops with a waterfall end. Beach inspired kitchen design with stainless steel kitchen appliances and large expansive counter tops. Multi windows throughout this home give this kitchen a very open feeling.
The kitchen has 2 sinks, one farm sink on the island. The island houses a wine cooler, microwave drawer and of course the basic sink essentials.

Throughout my career, I've worked with some hefty budgets on a number of high-end projects. You can visit Paris Kitchens and Somerset Kitchens, companies that I have worked for previously, to get an idea of what I mean. I could start name dropping here, but I won’t, because that's not what this project is about. This project is about a small budget and a happy homeowner.
This was one of the first projects with a custom interior design at a fraction of a regular budget. I could use the term “value engineering” to describe it, because this particular interior was heavily value engineered.
The result: a sophisticated interior that looks so much more expensive than it is. And one ecstatic homeowner. Mission impossible accomplished.
P.S. Don’t ask me how much it cost, I promised the homeowner that their impressive budget will remain confidential.
In any case, no one would believe me even if I spilled the beans.
Wood-Mode Fine Custom CabinetryRich and sophisticated are just a few words that easily describe this master bath. The Deep Aegean blue finish grounds the space with a sense of luxury, while the clean lines of the Edgemont recessed door style maintain a timeless, transitional appeal. The vanity area is enhanced with shelf valance lighting and a plush seating nook where a Custom Vanity Pull-Out provides convenient access to everyday items within arm’s reach, and roll-out storage drawers below keep fresh towels close at hand. Crown molding along the top and bottom of the cabinetry provides an elegant finishing touch, while toekick lighting creates ambiance and ease to see at night. Greensward LLCHard to photograph, but easy to love describes landscape lighting for us at Greensward. This homeowner was concerned about the safety of guests walking down the long paths to the lake at dusk to enjoy the sunset or start a fire in the firepit. The lighting on the patio created an extension of her home for evening events like fundraisers and allowed her guests to fully enjoy the stunning lakeside environment.

Innovative Design BuildFive stars isn’t enough! Our project was to reconfigure and update the main floor of a house we recently purchased that was built in 1961. We wanted to maintain some of the unique feeling it originally had but bring it up-to-date and eliminate the closed-in rooms and downright weird layout that was the result of multiple, partial remodeling projects. We began with a long wishlist of changes which also required replacement of very antiquated plumbing, electrical wiring and HVAC. We even found a fireplace that had been walled in and needed major re-construction. Many other aspects and details on this incredible list we made included an all new kitchen layout, converting a bedroom into a master closet, adding new half-bath, completely rebuilding the master bath, and adding stone, tile and custom built cabinetry. Our design plans included many fixtures and details that we specified and required professional installation and careful handling. Innovative helped us make reasonable decisions. Their skilled staff took us through a design process that made sense. There were many questions and all were answered with sincere conversation and positive – innovation – on how we could achieve our goals. Innovative provided us with professional consultants, who listened and were courteous and creative, with solid knowledge and informative judgement. When they didn’t have an answer, they did the research. They developed a comprehensive project plan that exceeded our expectations. Every item on our long list was checked-off. All agreed on work was fulfilled and they completed all this in just under four months. Innovative took care of putting together a team of skilled professional specialists who were all dedicated to make everything right. Engineering, construction, supervision, and I cannot even begin to describe how much thanks we have for the demolition crew! Our multiple, detailed project designs from Raul and professional design advice from Mindy and the connections she recommended are all of the best quality. Diego Jr., Trevor and his team kept everything on track and neat and tidy every single day and Diego Sr., Mark, Ismael, Albert, Santiago and team are true craftsmen who follow-up and make the most minuscule woodworking details perfect. The cabinets by Tim and electrical work and installation of fixtures by Kemchan Harrilal-BB and Navindra Doolratram, and Augustine and his crew on tile and stone work – all perfection. Aisling and the office crew were always responsive to our calls and requests. And of course Clark and Eric who oversaw everything and gave us the best of the best! Apologies if we didn’t get everyone on this list – you’re all great! Thank you for your hard work and dedication. We can’t thank you enough Innovative Construction – we kind of want to do it again!

How about that it's cedar. The cedar siding is our half log. It looks like a full log home, complete with butt-and-pass corners. The windows are trimmed with our hewn D trim. The deck railing and posts are ours too.
