With stunning views of the Annisquam River, this beautiful first period home was constructed in 1690 for Nathanial Harraden, sailing master of the USS Constitution. It is believed to be the oldest remaining house in this neighborhood of Gloucester. Our extensive historic restoration preserved the integrity and historic details of the original structure, which had been altered significantly over time. Deteriorated structural elements were repaired or rebuilt, and historic elements including beams were revealed. A bright new kitchen and bathrooms provide a functional layout suited for modern living, and use authentic natural materials that will patina and weather in harmony with the rest of the home. The new island counter was hewn from a large decaying tree on the site, and hand-painted marble tiles adorn the backsplash. New cabinetry was hand-crafted using methods authentic to the time. We preserved the kitchen’s existing brick floor, which originally provided a durable surface for milking animals inside during cold winter months. Using authentic materials and craftsmanship of the era, this special house celebrates its historic character and embraces modern updates that will welcome home generations to come.

This home was a typical Toll Brothers contemporary from the early ‘90’s. The exterior had reached the end of its life, with decayed cedar siding and a deteriorated roof. Greg & Tamara decided to use this opportunity to radically remake their home - to update its modern appeal and set it apart from any other suburban tract house. Outdated and unsafe front walkway. Brick pavers were uneven due to tree roots and poor installation. Wooden steps had deteriorated with time. We believe in reduce, reuse, repurpose. The pavers were pulled and saved on site. Tree stumps were professionally ground and removed. New materials were supplied to create save steps. LED lighting was added to increase night time safety.

Two small storage closets were removed and a wet bar installed in this lower level entertainment room. New carpeting and a slate tile floor replaced the worn carpeting that was original to the home. Two of the four walls and the entire fireplace were rebuilt due to extensive deterioration that had occurred over the years. This addition incorporates a great deal of symmetry as reflected in the skylights, lighting, closet layouts and window placement. The main goal for the owners of this 1926 house was a 7-foot-wide addition to gain more closet space near their main floor master bedroom. The opening from the bedroom to the addition was originally an exterior window that we widened. New built-in closets in the addition are easily accessed from the master bedroom. We framed the storage cabinets to look built-in. To break up a wall of storage, we added a window seat that is open underneath.
The existing house floors were not level. We replaced and sistered many joists as they had deteriorated over the 93 year age of the house. New white oak flooring covers both the addition and the affected sitting room and master bedroom.

The aging capsheet rock roof and deteriorating plywood decking were no longer providing adequate protection for this midcentury modern home in Huntington Harbor. We meticulously removed the old materials and installed new 1/2" CDX plywood decking, followed by a state-of-the-art 60 mil white GAF Everguard TPO roofing system, mechanically attached and heat welded at the seams. This energy-efficient roof is now backed by a full 20-year Diamond Pledge warranty from GAF.

The original siding on this house started showing wear in a few places. We patched the siding where needed and repainted the entire house with Sherwin Williams Latitude paint to prevent further deterioration.

This client of ours loves to entertain. We were commissioned to completely redesign his backyard space to include a Pavilion, an outdoor kitchen, and a fire pit area. Preparation for this work included demolishing existing deteriorated concrete and a non-functioning Koi pond.
We decided on a 12′ x 14′ layout for the Cedar Pavilion. Sconce lighting, infrared heating, and a ceiling fan were added to the scope of the Pavilion project to maximize the space’s usability. For the outdoor kitchen, we chose a 38″ Delta Heat unit for the grill with matching access doors, a 20K BTU Hestan Side Burner, and a Hestan Refrigerator. We chose soapstone for the countertop and backsplash, and we veneered the kitchen structure with natural San Miguel cobblestone.
The construction of the fire pit area required engineering measures to prevent damage to the nearby pine trees’ root systems from the planned improvements. This was accomplished by designing a sophisticated ventilation system installed under the patio and seat wall to allow the tree roots to continue breathing.
The firepit and surrounding seat wall were constructed of CMU block and veneered with natural San Miguel stone from Telluride. Light fixtures from Unique Lighting were discreetly tucked under the seat wall cap to enhance the area’s nighttime ambiance. Large decorative mossback landscape boulders were imported to create visual interest in the setting. The plant selection for the project included ‘Panchito’ Manzanita, Dwarf Burning Bush, ‘Isanti’ Dogwood, ‘White Bud’ Mugo Pine, Japanese Astilbe, ‘Blue Giant’ Hosta, and Variegated Iris.

Keeping with the craftsman design, these homeowners wanted to keep the same color palette but with all new products. When weighing the ongoing costs of patchwork repairs and repainting against a comprehensive exterior renovation, the cost vs. value equation became clear. Opting for new siding, energy-efficient windows, doors, and updated trim not only resolved maintenance issues but also ensured a long-term solution, tackling unseen deterioration that could be very costly in the future.
